I reset Firefox ( Ver 46.0.1) to get rid of some bothersome adware. Now when I do a Google search I no longer see the green safe symbols with the search results. I've reset Google as the default search engine (Tools->options->search->Google) and rebooted my PC several times without success. This is an XP SP2 computer I still make use for various reasons and the google safe symbols are a security feature I don't want to lose. Any suggestions on how to recover that feature?

Sounds that you had an extension installed previously. You will have to reinstall extensions when you use the Refresh feature.

When you use the Firefox Refresh feature then a new profile is created and some personal data (bookmarks and history, form data, tabs) is automatically imported. The current profile folder will be moved to an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop. Installed extensions and other customizations (toolbars, prefs) that you have made are lost and need to be redone.

It is possible to recover data from the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
