Sync Failed to connect to server error for over a week
I got a new hard drive on my laptop about 2 weeks ago and finally got around to getting Firefox re-downloaded a couple days later and then I discovered that there was a new version of sync. I have updated my version of sync on my desktop and ensured that the old version is gone but I still have not been able to get my laptop to sync even once. At the beginning there were no errors or anything and then today I am getting an error that says "Sync encountered an error while syncing:Failed to connect to the server. Sync will automatically retry this action." I checked the server status in the sync troubleshooting and everything seems to be fine. I also tried the about:sync-log and there is absolutely nothing in there. Another post here from last year suggested going to about:config and searching for services.sync.clusterURL and resetting it but I don't have anything listed as services.sync.clusterURL. I am extremely frustrated that I do not have any of my bookmarks or passwords or history on my laptop. Please help!

You can check for recently installed suspicious or unknown extensions.
Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.
