How do I stop websites from forcing me to stay in the same window or tab when I click on a link when holding down the command key?

Normally, when I have the command key held down when clicking on a link, that link will open in a new tab. But some websites, for some inexplicable reasons, are programmed to force users to stay in the same window nevertheless.

So how can I force the link to immediately open in a new tab when I have the command key held down, instead of having to resort to holding down the control key, clicking the link, and then having to click on “Open Link in New Tab”?
