I just recently downloaded Thunderbird after using Mac Mail for years. Mail suddenly refused to display messages and no one on the Apple forum could figure out why. So I was advised to download Thunderbird. So far, I'm not a fan. Here are my issues: 1. Unread messages in the Inbox are in bold. But the bold is so close to the normal font that I can't tell them apart. Is there another, better way to mark unread messages? A tick/check mark? A coloured background? 2. Messages are automatically organised into conversations. But when the latest message comes in, the inbox message doesn't go bold. So there is no way of knowing where to find it. I have to go through all messages that have a conversation (more than one message in the inbox) and find one where the latest message is in bold at the bottom. It's a royal pain. I see the number next to the account on the left, but nothing is in bold on the right. Grrr. 3. The conversations are the wrong way up. I want the most recent message at the top, not the bottom. I would actually prefer not to have them in conversations at all, just the most recent message, but I realise that is probably asking too much. 4. There is no number next to the Thunderbird icon on my desktop when I get a message. I used to appreciate this in Mail. It told me if it was worth going to my inbox. With Thunderbird I have to open the program to find out. Ok, that's enough for now. I'd better not get started on the shortcomings of the search function, or how to bring the unread messages to the top of the inbox list... There are just too many issues to address is one posting. Classic view option missing in TB 115.6

I have TB 115.6.0 running on 3 computers (1 desktop and 2 laptops). On 2 computers there is a tiny icon on the right hand side in the menu bar that allows me to switch between the "new and improved" (but utterly horrible), side by side message list and the classic view.

On the laptop I am currently using to write this request, TB 115.6.0 does not have that wonderful little icon and I am condemned to use the side by side display or find another mail client.

Can someone help me find or restore that little icon that gives me a choice or alternatively lets me change the message list display back to its old useful configuration?


As an aside, why do software developers insist on making "improvements" that no one needs or wants?

Hello, I use Thunderbird with the system default theme (dark on win 11). It is great, and when reading Emails, the background is white. So no mails get messed up. But when replying to mails, the background of the textarea is black and some mails do have black text. So it is impossible to write a mail and keep calm.

Is it in the config or somewhere else possible, to change the color of the textarea to always white / bright?

I do not need any information on how to change the theme for everything to bright as this is not an option.

Hello There all So I recently installed Win11 and Tbird 115.7.0

My issue is this: When I double click a PDF in a received email it opens up in my default PDF reader (Foxit) so it's all good. When I'm composing an email and add a PDF I like to check to see that I'm sending the correct PDF attachment so I double click and it won't open, I get this message (Attached Image) I went to Tools/Settings/General/Files&Attachments and PDF (Foxit) is set as the default so all good

So again Inbox messages opens PDF's no problem Composing messages won't open PDF's

I used to do this all the time on Win10 and it worked perfectly See my settings in image 2 Thanks In Advance :-)

Cox.com has decided to no longer have their own email server and switched their accounts to yahoo. I can read my email directly on Yahoo, but can't get their imap to work. I changed the imap and smtp settings to yahoo. Also, the email login has changed and I changed that in Thunderbird. With Cox, the login was just "username" and now it is "username@cox.net". When I made these changes in the account settings, my email account has disappeared from the inbox, but it is still in account settings. I am using a unified inbox with several accounts.

Cox will not help me with this, and I have been on hold with yahoo for an hour with no response. I have been messing with this for two days so I hope you can help me.

Hi, I am new to Thunderbird and not very computer savvy.

I have successfully set up my mail account and am trying to apply filters to incoming mail. The filter is very simple: If the message contains FROM "@mail.zillow.com" send the message to the ZILLOW folder (under that email address).

I have checked the filter log and it says "could not get filter db". I have tried to run the filter manually - no go.

I have tried to read about others who have a similar issue and it talks about debugging. I'm sorry. I do not know how to do this.

Hi, I want to use Windows Task Scheduler to send command line emails via Thunderbird.

I have found only: thunderbird -compose "attachment='C:\first.txt,C:\second.txt'"

This works. But I also want to include email to, subject, text body and send.

I have tried options like Blat. Blat works but not with gmail.com as they block it. So with Thunderbird installed locally I may be able to work around the new gmail restrictions.

I have a Mozilla Thunderbird email client, which has been linked to my Microsoft Outlook account using IMAP for years, and has operated perfectly well for my personal preferences.

At some point overnight (26th / 27th May) this stopped working and I am now presented with the error message "Sending of password for user xxx@xxxxxxx.co.uk did not succeed. Mail server outlook.office365.com responded: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password" when trying to download mail.

This is very strange as I can log in directly to my Outlook account using the same user name and password. No settings were changed by me in either Mozilla or Outlook.

For information, I can still send messages from Thunderbird but not now receive them.

Can anyone help, please?

Can I remove the tags colors from the threads pane

Right now, the messages in my threads pane show up in colors associated with their tags. This isn't a functionality I need and it makes it difficult for me to read a lot of the messages. I just want messages to show up in a single color -- black (or white on black would be great, but I don't know how to set a dark mode if one exists). I suppose even better would be the ability to have certain tags affect color and other not.

Any easy way of doing any of this?

Thunderbird + OAUTH2 w/ Gmail = constant pestering of user/pass

I did the switch to OAUTH2 for both POP and SMTP. I deleted the passwords, dumped the cookie cache, accept cookies from sites (always on 3rd party; keep until I close thunderbird), added an exception for https://accounts.google.com , then closed and started a fresh session of Thunderbird (currently on version 91.9.1 - the latest in my Ubuntu repos).

When I start Thunderbird, it asks for the user/password and then it downloads new messages. Great.

Except every few minutes, it asks me to re-authenticate for /every/ gmail account. Grrr....

Per the below comment, it seems that Thunderbird is supposed to save the password... but it doesn't. I still have passwords for all the non-google accounts, but I dumped all the gmail passwords per the many many instructions I've found. There's also nothing from google in the cookies (however, I've gone to other sites like the Thunderbird addons and those cookies do show up in the list). https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1375538#answer-1501083

I found someone saying that web servers might be a problem, I have no webservers installed on this system and nothing is listening to ports 80 or 443.

How do I get gmail to stop pestering me every few minutes for my user/pass and force Thunderbird to save the OAUTH2 token?

I have researched online and found lots of various answers to the same question (some years ago). Unfortunately, the processes suggested in the answers do not relate to what I am seeing on my computer. Can someone point me in the right direction, please? Thanks.

hi, I am still getting my Gmail through IMAP, but I have been used to downloading them via POP3 the recent years. Is this no longer possible? I am geeting password errors since this week.

Why do I want to use POP3? It is downloading all emails since my last session into a dedicated folder on my server, so that I can store them locally. With IMAP I have to browse through the emails manually and copy them over to my local folder. This is tiresome because I have to check, which emails are missing on my local copy since my last download.

This error suddenly started. The answer at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1309075 *** might be the solution but the Options panel seems to have gone and the online instructions in Thunderbird Help also lead to an outdated layout. More updated instructions would be appreciated and especially if written for a very old senile fool. I see that I set the password for my mail over a decade ago and I didn't know what I was doing then 8-) I can still read my email via Chrome.

      • If you viewed the password in Saved Passwords, it indicates you're using 'normal password' authentication instead of the preferred OAuth2. First, check that cookies are enabled in TB Options/Privacy or Privacy & Security (TB 78), set the authentication to OAuth2 in Server Settings for the incoming and also in Outgoing Server (SMTP), then delete the passwords in Saved Passwords, restart TB, enter the current working account password in the OAuth browser window when prompted.

I have done this in the past, and had found a reference for doing it but I can no longer find that reference. I had problem to change my "sound", but finally installed a .wma sound and it works fine.

Now a suggestion: change the menu to change the sound with only a .wav sound, instead of the current BIG list. For the fun, I found the http:\\www.soundrangers.com who produced sound of the background themes installed from Windows. It's still open.
