Firefox updated itself, wants to sync but doesn't recognize my acct.password

Firefox must have updated itself automatically yesterday because it now asks me to sync. However, it doesn't recognize my acct.password that I verified in Oct .2014. I don't want to reset it and loose my passwords, bookmarks, browsing etc. I have a suspicion Firefox created a new, empty profile otherwise there's no reason my previously working password is invalid. HELP!!!
