After months of problems with Outlook I installed Thunderbird. It seems to work great, but this morning I went to search for an email...I couldn't find it. I then realised that it only shows recent emails in the inbox. I've read various things but can't seem to make it download my old messages which are on the server and still show in Outlook.

Please help me sort this.

Is Thunderbird the default mail account?

Do you have an IMAP or Pop mail account?

If IMAP, what settings do you have here? :

'Tools' > 'Account Settings' > 'Synchronize & Storage' for the mail account

At the top of the page, 'Keep messages for this account on this computer' should be checked if you want to synchronize messages between your local system and your mail server.

Under the Disc space section, do you have it set to only synchronise the most recent xx days or messages ?

See more info here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/imap-synchronization

Thanks for your reply. It is an IMAP account. I have checked that the "keep messages for this account on this computer" is ticked. Under "disc space" it says "Don't delete any messages".

Under the Disc space section, you say 'Under "disc space" it says "Don't delete any messages". '

but what do you have in this part 'To save disc space, downloading messages from the server and keeping local copies for offline use can be restricted by age or size'

Is this selected 'syncronize all messages regardless of age' or is it set to only 'synchronise the most recent xx days or messages '?

Try AppMenuButton - View - Threads - All.

Alternatively via the main menu bar:
View - Threads - All

Press Alt or F10 to restore the menu bar in case it is hidden.

Ah, I think I've clocked it. It's because in Outlook I had it set to delete the messages from the server after 14 days and just keep on my computer. So Thunderbird is obviously only showing the last 14 days.

Is there a way to get these past messages onto Thunderbird? If not, I'll just have to keep Outlook open.

I tried to check the server the other day but I couldn't log on.

If Outlook and Thunderbird are on the same computer try this.

  • Important, set Outlook as the default email client.
  • then in Thunderbird, 'Tools ' > 'Import'
  • select: 'Mail' and click on 'Next'
  • select 'Outlook' and click on 'Next'
  • Once you are certain that all the emails have been migrated to Thunderbird, then set Thunderbird as the default email client.
