  1. Click the menu button and select Settings.
  2. In the General panel, go to the Applications section.
  3. Search for the Content Type mailto and select it.
  4. Click on the Action column in the mailto row to change the action.

  • Always ask will prompt you each time you use a mail function for which program or service to use.
  • Use <Program> (default) will automatically launch your operating system's email program (for example, Thunderbird, Outlook, Windows Mail) to its message composition window. For instructions on how to change your operating system's default e-mail program, see the next section of this article.
  • Use <Webmail> will open the message composition page for your webmail service (such as Gmail) inside Firefox. For more information about using webmail services, see the Using webmail services section of this article.
  • Use other... will let you specify an external program for Firefox to launch.
  • Application Details... will let you view information about or remove the webmail services that Firefox can use.
  • Close the about:preferences page. Any changes you've made will automatically be saved.

You probably are familiar with mailto links, for example, bob@example.com. Firefox needs a custom message compose URL to generate a new message to bob@example.com on webmail sites like Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and Outlook. When a page includes a special tag identifying its message compose URL, and you have not already added it to your list of available mailto handlers, Firefox displays the bar you mentioned:

I don't remember whether there is a way to prevent Firefox from doing that, but in my opinion, if you use Outlook as your email site, you should add it. This will simplify using mailto links and also would enable using the Email Link feature to share the title and URL of the current page in a new message (there is an optional toolbar button for Email Link in the Customize panel, Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars).

hi jscher2000, long time!

this has only recently started happening! never had it pop up b4. never had anything to do with "mailto links". never had this until this month. i haven't changed anything, i just want it to stop! i don't really want/need  an application for my live.com account.

any help is always appreciated! thanks, d p.s. also, our old nemesis is back! the "keep me signed in window is back doing exactly the same thing as b4! re-started the previous thread. again, any help is appreciated!

No application is installed, it's just a URL Firefox adds to the handlers.json file in case you want to use Outlook for mailto links. Here's what get added to the file:

Anyway, as I said, I don't know how to remove the message without adding that URL. Maybe someone else will have a suggestion.
