I've been using Mozilla VPN for a few days now. When I am at home it seems to be working quite well. When I leave home, however, the VPN drops and I have no internet connection unless I specifically turn the VPN off. I am a neophyte when it comes to VPNs. I assumed that the VPN would function whether my internet connection was through Wi-Fi or data. I live in a rural area so when I leave home my internet connection is through data. Is that why I cannot use the VPN away from my house?

Hi Meg,

Some cellular providers identify VPN traffic as tethered/hot spot usage and as such may either throttle the connection, not allow it at all or disconnect when hot spot data has been used up. I know Sprint did this in the past, but am unsure if they still do. If you are on a limited data plan a VPN may increase data usage.

I suggest checking with your phone service provider to see if they have restrictions regarding the use of VPNs.

I have an unlimited data plan with Verizon so I don't think that's the issue.

Mozilla VPN uses the WireGuard protocol. The vast majority of VPN services use OpenVPN. Verizon may not support WireGuard. You would need to speak with their tech support.
