every time I run spyware checkers, duckduckgo turns up in my profile in firefox. I've never used it, don't want it, and was not even sure what it was. How does it keep infiltrating my computer? I discard the JSON files that contain reference to it, and yet it keeps coming back.

It is in an .xml file, not in a JSON file. DuckDuckGo is one of the default search engines in Firefox, and is stored in the /browser/omni.ja filr in Firefox program files. If you do manage to delete it, it will reappear with the next update. The 7 default search engines are "protected" from being tampered with or "hijacked" as of Firefox 40.

DDG is highly regarded for its user privacy - I wonder why a spyware checker would have a problem with it and provide an alert.
