I want to add an Icon on the toolbar to open my Office 2007 Outlook mail software. I used to use "GetMail" but that site seems to be contaminated with virus software and i don't trust it. I have the Mailto app installed but that only works from the file menu. Since Mail is such a basic function of everyones PC,..why doesn't Firefox have one built into the basic tool bar. One Icon could be used for either webmail links or point to an EXE file on the PC.

I finally gave up and downloaded the GetMail add on and installed it and set it to execute Outlook.exe. This resolved my issue.

As you have pointed out, this is not a built-in feature of Firefox.

Two "Outlook Button" extensions popped up in a search on the Add-ons site, but these are for the Outlook.com site, not the local install of Outlook.

One possibly useful extension is Custom Buttons. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/custom-buttons/

You can get support for creating an Outlook-specific button on their forum: http://custombuttons.sourceforge.net/forum/

I assumed you already selected Outlook 2007 as your handler for email links. In case that isn't working correctly, see this article: Change the program used to open email links.
