I am running Firefox 1.9 on my desktop. I use Windows XP professional. Should I upgrade Firefox to 3.6 or is 3.0 adequate? I want to minimize any potential problems with respect to the upgrade process. Can I upgrade directly from 1.9 or do I need to implement other versions prior to trying 3.0. Thanks.....Dave

You have to update a few times is you use the Firefox's update menu, but you can install the latest version manually as described at Installing Firefox.

Please let us know how that helps.

UPDATE: If you install Firefox manually as described there, your profile folder (the bookmarks and settings) will be kept. It will not cause data loss.
