Why does Thunderbird delete bits of Outlook addresses?

I'm buying a Mac (I've always used PCs up to this point) and I'm thinking of using Thunderbird as my email client. At present I use MS Outlook (the Outlook that's part of MS Office, not the renamed hotmail email service). I've discovered that I can import some of my Outlook address information into Thunderbird but not all of it. So, for example, Thunderbird will import the office address of an Outlook contact but won't import their home address (at least I can't find it when I look in Thunderbird but maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?). The migration process also seems to chop the initial letter/digit of an address or sometimes a person's name, so that eg "XYZ House" becomes "YZ House" and "John Smith" becomes "Ohn Smith". How do I get round this problem please?
