IMAP account sometimes works, sometimes doesn't

I set up a new IMAP account to replace a POP3 account (which is now disabled), and it appeared to work fine initially and sometimes still works. The account is set to NOT check for new messages (I prefer to get messages manually), but as soon as I click on the Inbox, TB appears to start checking for messages (the green circle icon starts rotating) even before I click Get Messages. This also happens when I first open TB if that inbox is already highlighted. The spinning stops when I click on any other folder or account. (I also have a different POP3 account set up in TB that works just fine.) When the IMAP account is not working in TB, the green circle spins and spins without giving any notification at the bottom left and without receiving any messages. When it works, the notification message tells me it is connecting and then that it is connected.

I'm running TB 38.2.0 on Windows 7, with a strong wifi connection.

I also have Spamilhilator 1.6.0.0 installed and the account has worked fine with that. When it is not working, I have tried disabling Spamilihator; that has not made a difference.

I have also tried changing the Check for messages settings in different combinations; none of those changes made any difference. I've also restarted multiple times.

I have not been able to detect what is different when the account works and when it doesn't.

Anyone have any ideas?

have you tried with your anti virus email scanner disabled?

I disabled my antivirus and the account worked once. Reactivated antivirus, then deactivated it again, and account is not working again. Have repeated this more than half a dozen times.

I changed my synchronization to 30 days and thought that made a difference, then it stopped working again. Have reduced sync to 7 days: no difference.

I cannot see any consistency in when the account will receive email and when it won't. Get Messages has worked a couple of times but not usually. Quitting TB and restarting worked a few times, but now doesn't.

Is there behavior particular to IMAP accounts that I should know, e.g., will it always automatically check for messages on startup no matter what the settings?

Most IMAP servers seem to work in a "push" mode, where the messages are fed to you as and when they arrive (network permitting), regardless of the polling settings in the client.
