Firefox continues to run in task manager even after I close it. This causes a 100% use of my cpu. What is going on?

I am also getting an occasional message stating that Firefox is already open and running when I try to open it from my desktop. Really strange! When I open task manager, I see Firefox using a very large amount of memory, and the cpu is maxed out. Until I end the process, everything else just drags (updates, email, etc.) I uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox hoping it would correct the problem, but it made no difference.
