Chosen solution

Firefox uses the bookmarkbackups folder to store backups of the bookmarks, so you do not lose them in case of problems with the places.sqlite database file that stores the bookmarks.

Firefox keeps rotating daily JSON backups (bookmarks-####-##-##_xxxx.json) of the bookmarks in the bookmarkbackups folder, one for each day that Firefox has been started and up to a maximum of 10.

You can set this maximum via the browser.bookmarks.max_backups pref on the about:config page.

Current Firefox versions show the number of bookmarks in a JSON backup as part of the name of the file: xxxx in bookmarks-####-##-##_xxxx.json, so you can use that to select a backup.
