    Firefox 15.0 is scheduled for release on Tues Aug 28th!

    This release will rollout in the usual fashion. We will be updating a small number of users and then cutting off updates until we gather feedback. If all looks well, we'll unthrottle the release.

    A few things to be on the lookout for:

    • We have had reports that performance is lagging on 15: Bug 784512. Please keep an eye out for reports of this in the forums. We are still trying to validate this issue and need as much extra information as we can get. If you do see users reporting that 15 is slow, please ask them:
      • To compare 14 vs 15 using the same profile
      • What pages are you having problem on?
      • What security software
      • Extensions/about:support
      • Every time or once in a while?
      • Proxies?
    • Flash 11.4 - Initial feedback is inconclusive. We are hoping for better information before launch. Please help to us to test and verify if 11.4 is consistently better than 11.3
    • Click to Play is still very much experimental. Do not use it! If you see users reporting issues with it, please instruct them to disable it.
    • SPDY updates in 15 - The last time we had SPDY updates there were reports of broken sites. Please be watching for issues with Gmail and Twitter as we'd seen before.
    • Silverlight Block - The block went live yesterday so be ready to instruct users to update to a newer version Bug 782672

    I realize that a lot of these are not 15 specific, but just happen to be going on around release time. Just wanted to give a heads up!

    As always, we'll keep this thread up to date with the latest and greatest. Feel free to post any issues here!

    To disable, set plugins.click_to_play to "false" in about config (the default setting).

    SPDY updates in 15 - The last time we had SPDY updates there were reports of broken sites. Please be watching for issues with Gmail and Twitter as we'd seen before.

    The Firefox 15 release notes only say, Support for SPDY networking protocol v3 with no reference link. I did find some info on Wikipedia's SPDY page.

    Silverlight Block - The block went live yesterday so be ready to instruct users to update to a newer version Bug 782672

    Silverlight block is Mac-only. Users will need to re-enable Silverlight in the Firefox Add-ons -> Plugins list, even after updating to Silverlight 5.1.

    Random tidbits:

    (1) Form field placeholders no longer cleared on click but on first typed character

    Note: if the field uses a light-on-dark color scheme, it may be nearly impossible to see the I-bar cursor until a character is typed: started on V15: selecting a field with prefilled text, the cursor is always BLACK vs. the text color, so if field happens to be black... the cursor is invisible

    (2) CSS border-image / -moz-border-image changes

    (3) Safe Mode dialog no longer has checkboxes!

    (4) Tabs on Top choice removed from its former place on context and Toolbars menus. about:config required to toggle it.

    This is exactly the problem with rapid release. I had found this very bug 2 1/2 weeks ago on trunk (on 8/22/12, short chat in #firefox) and narrowed down the regression range to about 5/24/12 & 6/1/12's nightly builds using the Cache Viewer addon to assist me along the way. I didn't have time to file a detailed bug report so I didn't rush myself to file it even though I considered it a big privacy issue. I thought it only affected trunk builds (aka nightlies) and figured these big cache changes weren't going to be pushed in a release build until they had more time to bake (get tested) on trunk. I can't believe what I'm seeing here.

    In this case they were lucky to have such a alert user (or paranoid user :P) who checks their cache as much as I do.

    Thanks for posting this, Matt. The Private Browsing cache issue came up on the support forum and the OP even asked how to file a bug on it!

    Firefox 15.0 AND 15.0.1 both showing up as installed in Windows control panel.
    Support forum questions:

    • Why do I have 2 versions 15.0.0 and 15.0.1 of FireFox in my control Panel Window Vista x86? /questions/937282
    • I seem to have multiple installed copies of Firefox, is this OK? /questions/936956
    • The last update 15.01 did not remove 15.0 is it safe to remove 15.0? /questions/937355

    I have not checked to see if any bug report has been filed, or for any other reports, I do not have time to do that now, but it is obviously affecting multiple users and more than one than one Windows version.

    If this is expected where is it documented and when did this change. Is it always safe to remove the older version from the Windows control panel ? and is that the recommended course of action? (I have suggested backing up the profile in advance as a precaution).

    09-07-2012 updated Firefox 15.0 to 15.0.1 via Software Update. Now I have both 15.0 and 15.0.1 in Programs and Features even after a reboot. Uninstalled Firefox 15.0 and got an error when trying to uninstall 15.0.1 (as expected) and both entries were removed.     Just to clarify, the bug is that updating from 15.0 to 15.0.1 doesn't remove the 15.0 entry from the list of installed programs. There is only ONE version of Firefox installed (15.0.1) so if you uninstall 15.0 it will actually uninstall 15.0.1 and you will need to reinstall Firefox.

    Alice, thanks a lot for looking into that. I was obviously rather premature in assuming that the Control Panel results were correct. I have added a note to one of the threads, and if no one else does so I will look later for any others.

    No problem, since I had already looked into it and found the MozillaZIne thread and the bug report when I updated from 15.0 to 15.0.1 on Sept. 7th. Thanks for posting about it in this thread (I should have done that myself!).

    It would be really nice if we did document these issues somewhere like on the blog to make it easier for people to find these emerging issues and know we have an answer. Especially for others doing user support. They could go out to planet and it would help the whole community be aware of them as well. It doesn't have to be every single issue, just stuff like this and the flash problem.

    The plan around this has been to have the support forum use the same topic system as we're now using on KB articles. Then for example, if we have a brand new issue solved in the forum we can mark it as a "hot topic" and it will show up on the front page with the other hot topics. In fact one strategy could be (we've tried this in the past) to have a contributor ask a well worded question and then for another to solve it. Then we add the hot topics topic and we have a quick and easy stand in for a KB article.

    I have been hoping for a long while that we would be able to get some system for quickly documenting issues without the delays involved in producing highly polished and fully reviewed KB articles.

    there are drawbacks to simply having a hot topic section on a site. Is there an archive? How do people know there are new hot topics? The blog is a much better place.

    I think that threads like this one (and the Flash 13 and Flash 14 threads) on the contributors forum are a fine place to alert support forum contributors of emerging issues. The best place IMHO to alert Firefox users of emerging issues is on the support.mozilla.org front page .... so I like Michael Verdi's idea (HERE) about marking support forum posts as "hot topics" so that they would be linked from the front page Hot Topics.

    Of course, that wouldn't prevent someone like Lucy or anyone else from blogging about emerging issues on the SUMO blog or elsewhere.

    For contributors, this thread is supposed to be what you want.
