on-line newspaper is using javascrpt ads, which takes up approx 1/2 of my screen on either side, is there a way to disable javascript for that site only?

Yes. You can do it with the NoScript addon:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire.../noscript/

You will have to set it up with a custom rule so that script is blocked only on that 1 site.

You can also look at Adblock Plus to hide such ads.

You need to subscribe to a Filter list (e.g. the EasyList).
