I like to have my bookmarks in a sidebar. I used to make that change once, and it stuck. With version 21 I have to make it each time I reopen.
I don't know whether this arises from the change of version because I very recently did a clean-up of my hard drive with Norton Utilities 16. Still, I tried making a change to the actual bookmarks, and it stuck the next time I opened.

In case no one mentioned it before, the keyboard shortcut to open and close that sidebar is Ctrl+b which should save a trip to the menus. (If the cursor is in a text editing control, this might be intercepted to mean "bold" instead, but it should work everywhere else.)
Second, I'm not aware of an intentional change to this feature (i.e., remember the last state of the window). Two considerations raised in past threads:
(1) Possible interference by an add-on. Have you installed any new extensions recently? You can review the list here:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category
(2) Possible corruption in the file that stores toolbar layout and window positions. You can rename the file and re-customize. To do that:
Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Switch back to Firefox and Exit
Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename localstore.rdf to something like localstore.old
Restart Firefox. Hopefully now your sidebar state will be remembered.
Thanks for this. I was opting for a bookmark sidebar by simply clicking on the bookmark option in the menu. That wasn't working for me. I used Ctrl-B and the bookmark sidebar stuck. Didn't have to take the other steps suggested.
