Is there a GOOD reason that renaming Bookmarks can't be made intuitive?

You know what I mean. Right click the effing thing and type in the name.

It's bad enough you rearranged the order into an alphabetical garbled up mess when I imported from IE8 today but now trying to clean them up and sort into folders is made way more painful than necessary because Firefox doesn't follow the intuitive naming convention of allowing me to right click the bookmark to rename it. Come ON. I shouldn't have to search the database, find ONE thread with a long drawn out conversation on what MIGHT be a solution.

I know there's a reason people choose to use Firefox but, let me guess, this isn't one of them. Just make it work folks.

You can right-click a bookmark in the sidebar (Ctrl+B) or on the Bookmarks Toolbar or in a Bookmarks menu to open the right-click context menu. There you will find this Properties context menu item.

hello, click ctrl+shift+b in order to open up the bookmarks library - there it should be easy to rename any bookmarks (just select an entry & edit it at the bottom of the window).

Bookmarks in Firefox

Well that's neither good nor intuitive but thanks for trying. I followed your instructions and it opened up a new window with the headings, Bookmarks Toolbar, Bookmarks Menu, and Unsorted Bookmarks. Nowhere are the actual bookmarks anywhere visible. Clicking each entry in the window does nothing except repeat the name of each heading in a bar at the bottom of the window. I have yet to determine how to use this inconvenient tool to rename a simple bookmark.

Since I'm not the only one who finds this easy task way too complicated to execute, it pretty obviously needs to be changed. Does Firefox ever read these posts and act on them?

no, firefox developers won't read on the forum here - if you want to leave feedback use https://input.mozilla.org/feedback instead, it will be monitored by mozilla's staff.

back to your problem: when i try to import bookmarks from IE they go into a subfolder of the bookmarks toolbar...
edit: you can also right-click bookmarks directly in the bookmarks toolbar, select properties & rename them there).

If you have problems with importing the IE Favorites in Firefox then export the favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.
That way you also preserve any sorting that you may have done in IE with the Favorites and the favorites won't end up in a "From Internet Explorer" folder, but will be appended at the end of the Bookmarks Menu folder.
If you do not have the menu bar in IE then right-click the toolbar at the top to enable the Menu Bar.

What is against right-clicking a bookmark and renaming the bookmark via the properties?
That has always been one of the ways to do this this.

If you create a bookmark via a left-click on the star on the location bar then you can click the highlighted star another time to rename the bookmark and move it to a different folder.

I'm sorry. Both you guys are way over my head but I'm trying. Phillip thanks for giving me a link to complain about this miserable browser. I was so happy with EI8 and would have upgraded to 9 or 10 if they were XP compatible.

I saw an option to add a bookmark toolbar. I chose not to select it because this browser already seems to cut off more of the top of my screen than IE8 did which is visually uncomfortable. I tried the "getting started" option looking for some way to get back my menu of bookmarks streaming down the left side of my screen that could be clicked open and shut with one click. Didn't find any option for this set up. Instead it offered me some kind of drag and drop options to move buttons or something. Useless and really confusing.

Corel I absolutely agree. I thought the whole world could rename anything except children by right clicking on the object and selecting the rename option. However when I attempt to rename a bookmark this way in Firefox the right click menu doesn't give me the option to do so.

I don't know about any star. So far in Firefox when I want to create a bookmark I've clicked Bookmarks/Bookmark this page. The problem is that now Firefox has screwed up the order of my old bookmarks by alphabetizing them, I don't know what many of the old default names represent. I need to rename a few hundred bookmarks with representative names to make them useful but still can't find a way to do it.. Geez WHY do these companies deliberately make things hard for us? Sorry that last was a rhetorical outburst.  :(

If Rename isn't available in a context menu then a good second choice is always Properties.

If you need to do multiple renames then it is better and easier to do this in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) and use the Details pane in the right pane that appears if you select a bookmark in the upper part of the right pane.

Corel could you explain how? Properties where? And what do I click?

Philip gave me a keyboard shortcut that opened that Library window thingie but the bookmarks weren't visible and there were no instructions of any kind on the new screen. What's that window for and how do I use it? I don't understand the concept.

Basically I think it's that I don't know squat about Firefox, don't know anyone who's ever used it and am not even sure what to expect, what to look for, or what to ask. I'm not in Kansas anymore.

OMG Yes!! Finally. I almost had a stroke when I tried this the first time because every last right click option on the menu was grayed out. But closing the browser and starting over seemed to fix whatever was wrong and I was able to open the little properties window and change the bookmark name. Thanks so much for figuring out how to do this!!

And Philips link allowed me to go write a nice, long, whiny vent about this issue so I feel much better.

Thanks again to both of you. Your help was much appreciated.

There's an easier way than going through all that.

(don't right-click on anything)

Go to Bookmarks

Choose Show All Bookmarks

On the left side click the folder you want to rename

At the bottom of the right pane it's listed, rename the folder

If you want to rename the bookmark itself instead, after you've selected the folder, select the bookmark you want to rename at the top of the right pane, then rename it at the bottom as you would the folder.
