Firefox Crashes on startup since update to FF 18

Posted

After automatically updating to FF18, Firefox crashes everytime on startup. I read the article on Malware effecting this, ran malwarebytes antibytes and kapersky but they did not pick up anything. This really is a pain in the butt.

I wondered if ayone else had this problem or anyone had some advice on how to fix this?

Thanks

hello dbs123FF, from the crash report you've submitted it seems like the crash is malware related, as you've already suspected. the malicious file on your pc causing the crash is named yohgfrgg.dll (randomly generated filename).

according to reports from other users it should be detected by microsoft safety scanner and kaspersky security scan. if kaspersky didn't work for you, please also try microsoft's product:

I looked at your error report & before trying anything else, restart FF in safemode to see if its an extension/add-on causing it to crash. Try disabling hardware acceleration while in safe mode to see if this fixes it.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.). Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems

Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL

install the Search Reset Tool. This will remove the rest of the traces of this program from your Firefox.

Hi dbs123FF,

The file yohgfrgg.dll is suspicious and if you have not already deleted it could I ask that you keep it quarantined for the next few-days instead of deleting the file. Firefox engineers were having problems recreating this problem, despite this being a very common crash signature. There is a possibility they may still be looking for another copy of the malware file to examine.

Question owner

Thankyou for the help and support, very much appreciated.

Madperson's solution did the trick. I had already tried the Kapersky scan, but the microsoft scan is the one that found the file. Firefox works perfectly after that.

@John99 unfortunately i had already deleted the file before i had seen your reply. Sorry i couldn't be of any help there.

Thank you all once again - Fantastic advice.

I have had the same problem with FF crashing repeatedly on either launching it or when closing it (1 tab only open) or when closing a 2nd tab if it makes it through the launch. I am unable to launch FF in safe mode - it basically crashes. I am using Chrome to post this problem. And I've downloaded FF 17.0.2 per suggestion in another thread, but hesitate to uninstall FF 18.0, although I've backed up all my bookmarks, as I don't know if I'll have to re-install all the add-ons. Is there a way to know which ones I've got installed - and have enabled/active -- AFTER I've 'fresh'-installed 17.0.2 ? (NOTE: I am fully aware that I can currently see them in the Tools/Add-ons menu -IF- I can keep FF from crashing before I can view them.)

Thanks.

BTW, here are the crash report IDs since yesterday's upgrade: bp-c2965591-b20f-4e4d-8a11-e98d82130112 1/12/201310:17 AM bp-3312db32-4f5e-4493-ae77-b80a42130112 1/12/201310:16 AM bp-73450d12-70eb-4a33-970f-444a12130112 1/12/201310:11 AM bp-5e2efad3-4a8e-4c23-8e98-0f9672130111 1/11/20136:47 PM bp-2c8ee7ba-90a7-4b1e-a451-9a9402130111 1/11/20134:54 PM bp-058f9c2f-95ae-4f5d-9c2f-7135521301111/1 1/20134:22 PM bp-58ddf9cb-aa33-427c-8e16-7c16d2130111 1/11/20134:06 PM bp-e3d3152f-e5d0-4382-9cac-555982130111 1/11/20134:06 PM bp-89e59236-5229-4eb6-a499-14a8e2130111 1/11/20132:03 PM bp-b7e5e690-e5ce-4a41-a34d-797f12130111 1/11/20132:03 PM bp-1185779d-7d7f-495d-b6c7-f390b2130111 1/11/20132:02 PM bp-c1d8db3f-64db-479a-b3fe-b4b3c21301111/11/201312:17 PM
