Looks like Gmail doesn't have this feature, and I don't think anyone has found a solution, other than to view (IMAP) or retrieve (POP3) your mail in a program such as Thunderbird or Outlook that has sorting capabilities.

This probably would depend on which email site you're using. For example, is it Yahoo! mail, Windows Live Hotmail, Gmail, etc.?

thanks for your response. i'm using gmail. i've looked thru "settings" several times but still can't make it happen. can you help?

thanks very much for your help. although the answer is not what I was hoping for, you helped me to see how I might do a better job of searching for answers on my own in the future.
