When I go to my security settings window the "Remember passwords for sites" option is a light gray and inaccessible. All the other options are black and usable. How do I access it. I have a 2007 MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8 and Firefox 17.0. Thank You.

goto preferences -> security -> passwords

check whether it ticked the Remember Passwords for sites and check the exceptions for not saving your passwords.

The "Remember Passwords for Sites" is grayed out, as is the "exceptions" box.

What is the value of the related signon.rememberSignons pref on the about:config page?

Can you change that pref directly or is it locked somehow?

It is possible that there is a problem with the key3.db and signons.sqlite files that store the encrypted names and passwords in Firefox.
Rename the key3.db and signons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.
You can add .old to the file names (key3.db.old and signons.sqlite.old) or move them to another folder to make it possible to undo the action.
You need to set a new Master Password after renaming or deleting key3.db and all currently saved passwords are lost.
If that has worked then you can remove the renamed files that are no longer needed.

Thank you, problem solved. Referral to "...mozillazine.org/Password_Manager" provided the simple solution. Thank you both, iamjayakumars and cor-el.
