I am trying to set up a new email account on an existing Thunderbird install. Thunderbird is at the latest version having just updated it to see if that fixed the problem. Ver 91.1.2. It hadn't previously been updated for a while.

I set up the account with exactly the same details as the other account, except for the mailbox. The existing account is purak02, the new one purak03 and yes, I can sign into the new account via webmail.

I'm trying to set it up as IMAP but have tried POP3, I've tried different ports etc but still get the same error.

I have allowed Thunderbird through the firewall, but as I say, one account on the same server works, the other doesn't. Even the addresses are similar, with just the alias being different. eg office@ and sarah@

Suggestions please.

Regards Rob

You fail to mention the most important thing here. What is the domain being used?

Signing in to web mail really proves nothing beyond you know the password for web mail. There are even a very few providers that use different passwords and user names for receiving and sending mail as well as web mail. This is quite probably not your use case, but it is possible. It is also possible that the web mail has setting enabling IMAP and POP. That has become very common in a world where most people use web mail.

How many simultaneous connections are allowed to the server? if the IP address already has 5 (the default for IMAP) and you are trying to add more, will the server alow it?

Have you tried without the ubiquitous anti virus running? It is amazing just how much trouble email scanners (and Nortons sonar) can cause when setting up accounts. Unfortunately most of their heuristics rely on hacking type activities and they see the mail server probe as hacking.

Hi Matt,

I work for the ISP where the site is hosted. The domain is hosted on our servers and only has 3 mailboxes. The one that is working has 1 device accessing it and this new mailbox doesn't have any yet.

I've done numerous setups in Thunderbird and Outlook and other Mail programs and have mailboxes that are accessed via POP and/or IMAP or both on several devices and not encountered this problem before. Hence asking.

Bump on this one. Does anyone have any ideas? What other info should I provide?

As I've said, we have numerous other installations where a Thunderbird client accesses multiple accounts on the same domain and works fine but this one doesn't want to work.
