I really am getting fed-up with Thunderbird which is getting increasingly user unfriendly and more and more geekified, e.g. the enforced belief on users that every user wants threading. To add to the gneral irritation, half a dozen emails have suddenly vanished from the folder they had been moved to.

Here's what happened.

1. The emails were moved from the iinbox to the folder.

2. They were unthreaded.

3. They then disappeared.

A search has not found them and opening and checking all folders has not found them.

So, two questions:

1, Where are they?

2. How do I get them back?

I have a hotmail.com address. Until recently, it worked well as webmail, plus also from TB on laptop, via IMAP and SMTP.

A few days ago, the sending function via SMTP stopped working (not IMAP); and webmail is still fine. I've tried a lot to solve it, but to no avail.

My guess is that MS is to blame, but don't know how to reach someone better-than-hotline there.

Details see annex; OS is Win10, TB is 115.9

Would someone be familiar with this kind of problem? According to my traditional european quality idea, best should be to get in touch with an MS technician with access to the syslog, to hear what the system's response to connection attempts is - but this seems to be precluded? I wonder what alternatives there might be?

I just sent an email and had to go back to it to check something (which I do a lot) and it does not show on my sent list. I can find it doing a search for it and I see it (and 3 others) under search and it says it is in sent file, but actually none of the 4 emails on this search now can be found in the sent folder. And they all did (but the one from tonight) 2 days ago.

I now wonder if other emails have been lost, and can be accessed only by doing a search. But I need to have the emails in the serch folder as I go back to many of them a lot and all the time. Now I will not be able to find them unless I can remember who i sent it to. And I wonder how many more of them are lost and I just have no idea.

Any ideas? Has there been an update in the last week??

What can I do to get these emails (and maybe many others) back?

And I just copied this message to save and put it in an email to myself and sent it and it is not there.

Nancy

In Aug 2023, I posted the thread, "Account Inactivity." Basically, I was advised that T-bird is a 3rd party app and by using T-bird to pop my email from gmail, that keeps my gmail account active. I now must question that.

Back in December '23, I went to log into gmail in my browser to check the spam folder for an email I had been waiting on. I could not log in. I got caught in that "inactive account" loop from hell. Took me about two months before I could finally get logged in in a browser. At the time, I figured I had just been unlucky enough to have been caught up in the "inactive account" thing by accident.

Now, today, I went to log in to another gmail account in my browser to change my password after a spam email with an attachment was popped to T-bird. And I could not get logged in. I jumped thru all of Googles firey little hoops. I played their "I am not a Bot" game, and entered the code I had them send to my recovery email account. THIS particular email address is NOT used for anything but LEGITIMATE dealings - bank, credit cards, bills, credible merchants. No jokes, no funny pix, no love letters, no nonsense. I dunno where this spam email came from. I apparently have not been pwned (yet). But I want to be safe. I want to change my password.

Anywhooooooooo.... it appears that simply popping my email to T-bird since T-bird is considered a 3rd party app that is allegedly one of the ways to keep my gmail account active... is NOT working. I'm not a real happy camper right now. I really wouldn't care since this doesn't seem to stop T-bird from being to get me my email. BUT...you HAVE to log in to webmail to change your password.

Perhaps using "Sign in with Google" literally means using those links you find scattered around, and popping email to T-bird is not included??

Once again, I came here hoping for help/answers/advice rather than giving myself a stroke dealing with illogical, no-help, online nonsense at Google.

Thanks

At one time I was the recording secretary and had use of a gmail id, ntdemocraticcommitteerecsec@gmail.com I have moved on, and deleted the account in Thunderbird. Yet, every time I go into Thunderbird I get the prompt below. I do not have a shared calendar with this account, nor an address book. What do I need to do to stop this pop up?

Thanks in advance,

I am unable to drag and drop messages from Inbox into a number of subfolders in a created folder. Other subfolders in this folder do not have this problem. When I attempt the drag and drop, a circle with slash image appears.

When I attempt to move messages to these problem subfolders using 'right click' and 'move to', the problem subfolders do not appear in the drop down list. Same happens if I use 'message' and 'move to'.

Probably related to this, the font of the problem subfolders recently changed to italic.

I can access the existing messages in the problem subfolders.

I have tried 'repair' on these subfolders, with no change.

I am using Windows 11, Thunderbird 115.9.0.

I am having 3 different issues.

In version 115.4.2 the drafts folder repopulates itself with messages from my sent box randomly as it sees fit. I have to keep deleting them. Is there a fix for that?

I despise the accordion title pull down.s in the inbox and sent folders. I want to have my replies listed as a single message. Can I unset that despicable feature or do I have to back date to some other version. If so, which one?

Believe it or not, I was using thunderbird version 2.x.x but was forced to upgrade because Spectrum internet provider switched from pop mail to imap. What is the first version (older than 115) that allows imap.

We have been trying to repair the sent folder in Thunderbird without success. Messages do not get saved there. Several recently have ended threads an said there is no support for email but that seems to be confused? In any case it loos like there is no simple fix to get the sent folder back. Do you think it would solve the issue to uninstall Thunderbird and install it again? Thank you for the help.

Hello, Nothing changed in my settings and now when I go to forward a message it is no longer inline, it has the messages as attachments I can't see, read, edit. My settings does say "inline" yet it is still not placing the forwarded message in the body anymore. How can I get this back? Everything I read says to check the setting inline but that doesn't fix the issue. thank you,

The instructions say to press CRTL+Shift+F to search for a specific message in a folder, but when I do that NOTHING happens. I do not get a box to enter what I'm searching for. CRTL+Shift+K works for searching a disk but that takes way too long and produces way too many results.

Why can't Search just be on the menu like it used to be?

Made a mistake and installed 157.7.0 on Linux

Now cannot backup/restore to another computer so cannot use that computer.

Old Profile used to be in .thunderbird folder - easy!

Now profile seems to be in /home/oem/snap/thunderbird/common/.thunderbird/26pphmrb.default

This does not contain all emails especially for pop3 and anything after Nov 23. It does not work

Q's

Best way to fix? Can I force it TBird to read the .thunderbird in home directory? Can I install an older version of TBird easily? Is there some other way to restore the profile and clone another computer?

I have been using Thunderbird for years, to complete satisfaction. Today, instead of using the taskbar, I used the desktop icon, and inadvertently (apparently) installed a beta version. I had mails redirected to folders, but these no longer exist. However, I do require some of the mails in those folders. Only inbox is shown, and it includes recent mails but also some long-deleted. I can recreate these folders but can't see any way to auto-direct. There is no help available directly within Thunderbird.

Can I have the non-beta version back, please?

I suddenly found emails not yet deleted from my imap inbox and from my sent folder had disappeared. I run Thunderbird on a Mac. When I go to Time Machine to restore and go back a few days before the files disappeared I find the profiles. When I restore, for example, Sent and sent.msf the popup box indicates success. When I open Thunderbird and go to the sent folder the emails are listed as hoped for but within about 5 seconds the MAC spinning color wheel pops up, spins for 5 or 10 seconds and then the emails disappear once again. If I open the finder app and scroll to the sent folder finder shows data to be there and when I click on the tab a box opens up with computerese display of the content but not a readable email message. Can anyone tell me where the restored emails age going?

Similarly, when I restore my inbox from Time Machine the popup box indicates success but when I go to inbox the old, undeleted messages are not there. Again, where are they?
