I-Firefox Isithangami Sokwesekwa

Firefox has been my browser of choice for about 6 years. On 3/16 /15 it stopped working. I tried all of the suggestions. I then completely uninstalled Firefox and Mozilla Maintenance. I restarted and checked my disks and memory. All other browsers: IE, Safari, Chrome & Opera work fine. I installed from Firefox Setup 36.0.3.exe this morning. Same problem. Works for about 5 minutes and then hangs.

Firefox hangs. Doesn't give a clean crash. Doesn't give report. Cannot restart. Removed completely (even Mozilla Maintenance) and re-installed: same problem.

What can I do?

When I opened Firefox this morning, it stated that there was a new version available so I clicked the box.

The browser closed, it went through the motions, and reopened the browser.

I checked the version and it still showed 63.0.3, with the option to update, so I rebooted the computer, reopened the browser, and it still shows 63.0.3 with the option to update.

I am sure that others have already posted about this but what is the fix?

Long time user (15-20 yrs?), I have been avoiding the "next" upgrade for several years for various reasons (hate change, fave add-ons go away, hate change, not broke-don't fix, hate change...). But I am now running into a few websites that won't permit this browser, so it may be time to move on. With heavy adblocking and tracker-blocking and my benign web browsing habits, I've not been concerned about security (never had a virus in 20 years - knock wood). It's just full functionality and slowness at this point. At this point, I see even my Classic Theme Restorer is no longer available, so I'll just have to bite the bullet on aesthetics and deal with a modern browser. However, a couple of things are unclear:

1. does 20 years of bookmark history (and remembered history) affect memory footprint. I only refer to existing bookmarks occasionally these days and may consider a full purge. Partial purge would probably be too time-consuming. Maybe even a full profile purge might be worthwhile for a true clean slate. Maybe FF has come a long way and old extensions and settings won't be necessary. I also have several about: settings that I may (or may not?) miss.

2. Are automatic updates unavoidable in newer versions? I read about "manual" but it sounded temporary.

3. The permissions on many potential add-ons I've looked at are quite unnerving... e.g many of them require full access to ALL my data (usernames and passwords!!!) and I know the function has no need for such. Who has time to investigate these fully for safety? Is there any anti-malware vetting required for add-ons to be available?

4. I know newer is generally faster, but FF has a history of growing and slowing down after upgrades. My hardware isn't getting any newer (although its more than ample for my current needs), but software tends to be developed on latest and greatest hardware. How does latest FF compare to circa V41 in memory usage?

In any case, I thought I would give the latest vesion a whirl on my old Vista laptop (which is currently at V43) and check it out before plunging in on my W7 work PC or home PC. Any answers or insight into such a big jump are much appreciated.

Mac OS X High Sierra 10.13.6

Here's the routine with FF on this machine: If FF 68.0.2 is running, after a while I will try to open a new tab and be told "Sorry we need to do one small thing to keep going, FF has been updated in the background, Restart FF" I do so. It opens up a new, clean profile in a new window (About FF now says 68.0.1 in this version of FF, and it downloads 68.0.2 and prompts to Restart FF (again)). At which point it runs "a new helper tool" and re-updates FF to 68.0.2. I then have to mess with about:profiles to go back to my profile. Things then run routinely for a few hours or a day, before the whole routine starts over again.

Alternately, if FF 68.0.2 is not running, if I open it (after opening and closing it several times without issue), I will get a message that "You've launched an older version of FF, Create New Profile or Quit". Create New Profile leads me through the routine above.

Versions of the above routine have happened not just between 68.0.2 and 68.0.1, but also between earlier version updates. That is, this has been going on for months. It does seem in the last couple of weeks that the interval of time has shortened and I'm having to do this routine everyday or even multiple times a day. I have no problems like this with FF on any other machine.

I've tried:

Trashing FF and re-dl'ing from Mozilla. No dice. Trashing FF, trashing Library/Cache/Mozilla and Firefox folders. No dice. Trashing FF, trashing Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles (and re-signing in to retrieve my existing bookmarks etc and re-setting up View and other Preferences). No dice.

If anyone has any ideas, I'll be grateful, thanks in advance.

I am running version 65 as of Feb-3-2019 on my Mac high sierra and for some reason Firefox updated to this version without my consent. I have "check for updates but let me choose when to install them" selected.

Why does this update occur?

Hi. My last update was March 27, 2015. Just last month. I keep getting error messages that say Firefox cannot update. I've read this makes it a security issue if it won't allow Firefox to update. Please assist. Thanks.

hi when i click on more under shockwave flash add on it doesn't show automatic updates to either set to default, turn on or turn off but it shows up on other add ones how do i get this to show up as i keep having to update shockwave flash manually and i just want it to update automatically thanks

Task manager shows Firefox loaded as a service but has threads waiting to complete. There is no application shown in Task Manager (which seems reasonable as Firefox has not loaded). There are no error messages. The " microsoft spinning circle " goes for a few seconds and then dissappears as if the program has loaded. Happens only after 2nd & subsequent loads after reboot. Firefox appears to work first time after reboot. This has only happened after upgrade to 42. Clean install makes no difference. Chrome works OK Has worked fine up until update 42. Already tried doing a clean install with the Inform Mozilla box cleared. Perhaps Firefox has started using a port that is blocked by the virus scanner? I get no logging for the virus scanner showing anything blocked. A full virus scan reveals nothing. Operating system is Windows 10 (64 bit)

I am using a 10 year old XP SP3 system for some legacy things and running FF 50.x. very nicely.

Let's face it, XP's days are past numbered. However, sites like CNET, CNN, etc. will not play the main video content. I've tried many of the articles and attempted fixes on this forum and understand that time is running out.

Is there some program or plug-in that can buy me some extra time or is it just going to be hit or miss? BBC's site works fine. It all depends on the website that is streaming the video.

How can I tell what format the video content is being streamed in?

I thought that Firefox would bring built-in compatibility by translating these new video formats so older systems can play them. Am I incorrect?

Why is it that no matter what settings I use in Firefox version 57.0 is automatically updated. I don't want 57.0 because I use RoboForm, am happy with the performance, and don't want to have to press god knows how many more buttons just because Firefox wants to follow others rather than lead. As you are attempting to look and behave the same as the others, then what is the point in staying with Firefox? I am sick of having to uninstall 57.0 and reinstall 56.0 just because Firefox ignores and apparently overwrites my settings, and decides to ram this downgrade down my throat. I decide what goes on my PC not you! I also decide what add-ins I want to install, only now, as this new format has been rolled out before anyone has a chance to catch up , it will take months for the add-in developers to come up with alternatives, if at all. In the meantime I am stuck with Firefox no longer doing what I want, when I want. Your actions have provided me with proof that you consider yourselves above your customers, which is a diabolical attitude to adopt. As you are going for a copy of other software, I have decided not to stick with your high self regard and ignorance of your customer's needs and go elsewhere, after all you all look and behave the same apparently, so the only marker for me is trust, which apparently you don't require. On behalf of other search engine providers, I thank you for increasing their customer numbers.

Apart from switching to Chrome, how can I stop automatic downloads? I don't want the latest Firefox. I am happy with 56. Please don't tell me it "contains vulnerabilities and exploits...etc" as so does 59 which you will fix with 60 which will also contain them which you will fix with 61 etc. I hate the latest one because it is so slow - it pauses 5 seconds with each scroll movement. Firefox 56 and Chrome work fine so it's not the computer. I am sick of reloading 56. What about having a proper Do Not Initiate Downloads system? Is it so hard? You are certainly pushing me into Chrome, which I don't like much.

The question pretty much says it all. I've been getting upgrade notices for a week or three -- but when I click the "more information" link on that window and come to your system, I am congratulated for already having v40.0.2 installed (which is true) and told that 40.0.2 is the most current version. What's going on here?

I have downloaded Firefox 45 multiple times, and installed it multiple times. But when I open the application, a blank window opens, and I am unable to browse. I type in a web address, and the window stays blank. I select items from menus, and nothing happens. In other words, it opens, but does not function at all. In order to get to any websites, I have to go back to Firefox 39, which is the most recent version of Firefox that seems to function on my computer. I am using a Mac, running OS 10.11.4 (El Capitan); this OS is up to date, so an out of date OS is not the problem. Can anyone help me get the latest version of Firefox to work on my Mac?

When I started Firefox, it said that was "installing updates..."; an hour and a half later, it was still installing (I have never had this happen before). I closed the program and shut down the computer, then restarted. When I tried to restart Firefox, I got "unable to load XPCOM". So, I uninstalled my Firefox and attempted a download; only took me a dozen or so times, as it kept getting interrupted at the very end. Finally got to a site where I was able to download it, but when I attempted to install it, I got a little box that said "0% extracting" and nothing happened. An hour later, the little box STILL says "0% extracting" and nothing has happened. I cannot seem to get Firefox to install, and I'm ready to take a hammer to the computer. How do I fix this? Appreciate all help offered. Thank you!

HOW DO I DO THIS, PLEASE?

Trying to check status of my Plugins, and find 6 Unknown Plugins listed. Each with a 'Research' button alongside. When I try to research, I dont get Google results but Duckduckgo results - for some unknown reason. My normal search engine is Google, for most everything, and I would like to change the 'Research' button to use Google too. I can not find any way to do this, and I dont know how Duckduckgo got involved in the first place. (It is one of the various engines set in Options for the search bar search engines but then so are others, and they dont get into the 'Research' button business.) How can I change this to the way I want it? A solution would be welcome, please!

Will a patch for the Meltdown / Spectre vulnerabilities be released for the extended support release Firefox ESR v52.5?

I understand that the recent Firefox v57.0.4 patches this vulnerability but the 03-Jan-2018 Mozilla Security Blog entry at https://blog.mozilla.org/security/2018/01/03/mitigations-landing-new-class-timing-attack/ is unclear because it states a patch will be released for "all release channels, starting with 57".

something strange with me. If Firefox automatically update e.g. from 59 to 59.0.1 the language remains Dutch, but when I look in the control panel, it says that I would have the English version.

Just updated to Firefox version 45.0.2, tonight, and changed none of my settings on anything, and the browser is crawling. Anyone else having this problem? I know what we're going to be told, and I'm not really interested in that. What I am interested to see is how many others have had this instant problem.
