The Firefox update that rolled out on Nov. 15, 2016, seems to have deleted both my browsing history and bookmarks. How can I restore these (especially history, which is way more important to me)?

I installed addons (e.g. adblock lite, ad killer) and when I shutdown Windows and start it again, the addons disappeared in Firefox. I'm using Firefox 40.0.3 non of addons will stay. I restored Firefox to its original state, installed everything again, also did the Malware scan as suggested on a post and the problem stays. So every time I start Firefox, have to install the add ons which is a bit hectic.
Please help me with some solution.

So a few weeks ago I finally upgraded to 49 something. Bookmarks worked normally after the upgrade. But yesterday my computer froze and I had to reboot. Bookmarks and history suddenly missing, can't create bookmarks. Found Restore, can see a list of backup bookmark files with dates and file size, but get message "unable to process backup file." Browsed for possible solutions. Ascertained that I only have the one profile. Downloaded 50.0, installed, rebooted. Still nothing. I did not install any new add-ons as far as I know. Not doing any syncing. (By the way, I view my bookmarks as a sidebar.)

I recently had a major system crash and had to wipe my C drive and rebuild my O/S from scratch (Windows 10). I got most of my stuck back, but the last remaining hurdle remains my Firefox bookmarks and passwords. Although I have some pre crash jsonlz4 files back, the only one that works is one from 2016, which is useless to me. All the others give the familiar 'unable to process the backup file' error when trying to recover them. I have tried the stuff most recommend - have a laptop with version 54 of FF, that did not work, nor did trying the portable versions of FF on version 52. Have also tried FF safemode and then replacing the sqlite file as well. I would like to know if there is a way of opening the jsonlz4 file and extracting the data from it? Even if it is a case of just being able to copy and paste the URLs one at a time that would be something. I have stuck with FF for years despite some performance issues and reliability concerns compared with Chrome, but this might be it now for me. I have seen utilities and scripts, but they seem to be based on Linux or Python platforms and the resources and time going down that route do not make it worthwhile. Is there anything that will work on Windows which does not require hardcore scripting skills?
Incidentally, I already know about exporting the bookmarks etc as a backup for future use. Although that is fine if the computer dies again, it does not help me with my current situation.
Thanks

Windows 7, firefox 40.0.3
My computer crashed and thus, firefox did not close properly and lost all of my tabs. Under Menu -> History, the Restore Previous Session is greyed out. Why is this? Shouldn't I be able to restore from there?
I've found replies from "jscher2000" and my sessionstore-backups\previous.js file looks like the one I want to use to restore my tabs. However I do not see how to use this file to restore my tabs.
How do I use previous.js to restore my tabs and tab groups?

Recently starting up Firefox after an update to 46, the software acted as if I had never used it before and I had to 'log in'. My sync information has regressed back to a way it was years ago. My bookmarks are stale and new ones missing. I have two other computers I log into with firefox browsing. I'm afraid to check with those to see that they have crashed too.
Can someone explain what went down and why the browser has lost the most recent configuration I had been using?
