Get error "Firefox has stopped working" under Windows 7

I'm running Firefox 3.6.10 (just upgraded, I was at 3.6.9) and every so often (maybe 1-2 days), Windows 7 decides to crash it with the error "Firefox has stopped working". Firefox itself does not seem to be generating a crash id, which is disappointing since that way it would be reported. I run a LOT of tabs, at the moment I have around 100 open. I notice that the CPU usage seems to get very high (it shows 25% for me, but I have a quad core machine so I guess that is 100% of one CPU) as well as memory (1.5gb). It's almost as though Windows thinks that Firefox has stopped responding because of the high CPU usage and decides to terminate it.

I've seen some posts here reporting similar problems, but no resolutions. I also saw a post elsewhere suggesting disabling throttling in Windows but saw other posts saying that had not solved the problem.

Any suggestions on how to fix or troubleshoot this problem?

on a Mac OS 10.4.11

flower blossoms now decorate the menu and tab bar - on a bold green/yellow back ground. The design makes it difficult to read some of the text. Earlier this week I succeeded in disabling it, but cant find that path again.

I just downloaded the last update and the annoying design returned. Firefox must really like it. I definitely want to remove it!!

I am on a Mac. This morning there was an update which I installed. Now the homepage and many others like Wikipedia and Google and Gmail all have a strange handwriting font that I can't seem to get rid of. I have tried going into preferences - all the settings look the same. I have tried changing them to no effect. I have clicked and un-clicked the option to allow web pages to choose the font - no change. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox...nothing. Any ideas as to how to fix this?

I cannot clear my location bar history. I know I can change the settings so that no suggestions appear, but as soon as I change those settings back, every page I went to appears again. Of course this means that if someone else would use my computer, they would only have to change those settings -which is very easy- to be able to see exactly which sites I visited. So no matter what settings I choose, those pages will remain stored, even if I erase my history! I consider that a gross invasion of my privacy. If I erase my history, I mean that I don't want any previously visited page to remains stored in my browser or on my computer, unless I intentionally bookmark them. I don't want them stored in the location bar either!!

I am seriously considering changing browsers now, to something that does not willingly, at a single mouseclick, expose my entire surfing behaviour to every geeky friend of my teenage child who gets to play games on my computer!

Preventing "Firefox Updated" page/tab

I currently have a terminal that is being loaded with a pre-generated boot image (not unlike a live CD), however when I created the image I used Firefox 3.6.8.

Last week I rebuilt the image with Firefox 3.6.10, yet all of my settings were still "linked" to 3.6.8, and as a result the "Firefox Updated" page is trying to load. This terminal will NOT have any means of access that site, and this terminal should NEVER ever show that page. It is configured to load a specific page, and only that page. Yet, no matter how I configure my prefs.js file, it always tries to show the "Firefox Updated" page, here are my settings:

user_pref("browser.migration.version", 0);
user_pref("browser.places.importBookmarksHTML", false);
user_pref("browser.places.smartBookmarksVersion", 2);
user_pref("browser.rights.3.shown", false);
user_pref("browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash", false);
user_pref("browser.startup.homepage", "http://my_startup_site.com/index.php");
user_pref("browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone", "ignore");
user_pref("browser.tabs.warnOnClose", false);
user_pref("distribution.openSUSE.bookmarksProcessed", false);
user_pref("extensions.enabledItems", "susefox@opensuse.org:1.0.1,{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}:3.6.10");
user_pref("extensions.lastAppVersion", "3.6.10");
user_pref("extensions.update.autoUpdate", "false");
user_pref("extensions.update.autoUpdateEnabled", "false");
user_pref("extensions.update.notifyUser", false);
user_pref("intl.charsetmenu.browser.cache", "UTF-8");
user_pref("network.cookie.prefsMigrated", true);
user_pref("privacy.sanitize.migrateFx3Prefs", true);
user_pref("signon.rememberSignons", false);

Yet, when the system finishes booting I get this:

user_pref("app.update.lastUpdateTime.places-maintenance-timer", 1282780604);
user_pref("app.update.lastUpdateTime.search-engine-update-timer", 1282780734);
user_pref("browser.migration.version", 1);
user_pref("browser.places.importBookmarksHTML", false);
user_pref("browser.places.smartBookmarksVersion", 2);
user_pref("browser.rights.3.shown", true);
user_pref("browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash", false);
user_pref("browser.startup.homepage", "http://my_startup_site.com/index.php");
user_pref("browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone", "rv:1.9.2.8");
user_pref("browser.tabs.warnOnClose", false);
user_pref("distribution.openSUSE.bookmarksProcessed", true);
user_pref("extensions.enabledItems", "susefox@opensuse.org:1.0.1,{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}:3.6.10");
user_pref("extensions.lastAppVersion", "3.6.10");
user_pref("extensions.update.notifyUser", false);
user_pref("intl.charsetmenu.browser.cache", "UTF-8");
user_pref("network.cookie.prefsMigrated", true);
user_pref("privacy.sanitize.migrateFx3Prefs", true);
user_pref("signon.rememberSignons", false);
user_pref("urlclassifier.keyupdatetime.https://sb-ssl.google.com/safebrowsing/newkey", 1285372400);

The prefs.js file is downloaded the first time the system boots, if it requires an update, otherwise it simply uses what is on the disk. It is during the importing phase that this breaks.

As you can see in my first listing, I'm attempting to disable automatic updating of anything, and I've used a whole bunch of web-sites to try to get this to work. Based on all of the information I have looked over, I should be able to leave this as is:

user_pref("browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone", "ignore");

And simply update these:

user_pref("extensions.enabledItems", "susefox@opensuse.org:1.0.1,{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}:3.6.10"); user_pref("extensions.lastAppVersion", "3.6.10");

To what ever version is new. I'd prefer to not have to do anything at all. I want to be able to use the newer versions at will with out having to clear my profile, and not get that update page.
