I'm using Windows 10 and just updated to Firefox 78.0.1 last night. Normally, when I open a new tab, I push the down arrow key to bring up my browser history and access my most-used sites. Upon updating last night, I discovered that I can no longer do this. When I press the down key, nothing happens. To get the same result I'm used to, I have to press the space bar, but I've been doing this a certain way for several years and the motion is completely ingrained in me. If I turn Top Sites back on in the options, the drop-down list will open upon pressing the down key, but that of course only brings up the Top Sites. That's not what I want. I tried rolling back to the previous version, 77.0.1, but that didn't fix anything. If I create a new profile, the problem persists. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I know it sounds like an extremely minor issue, and maybe that's true, but I just want to use my browser the way I like using it. I'd appreciate any help/input.

Also, I suppose I should mention that I didn't make any changes to my preferences prior to this issue.

Hi,

I had applied the settings to disable the new urlbar features, but as of version 77 these no longer work.

I absolutely hate this change; it does nothing useful, it interferes with viewing the page, and it very much feels to me like change for the sake of change.

If someone can pass this on to whoever makes these unilateral decisions :

Don't make changes to the user interface that are not optional. How do they not understand that changing the UI for hundreds of millions of people is not a good idea?

So my question is, how do I disable the new urlbar "features" and return to a plain static one?

This is driving me nuts.

My desired behavior is that, when I middle-mouse-click on a hyperlink, Firefox launches a new window (not a tab) with that URL.

This is how it was working before a power interruption forced my computer to restart tonight, and my desired behavior has gone away.

The middle mouse button works for other functions; and, middle-clicking on bookmarks in my bookmark bar does launch a new window with that bookmark as expected. However, middleclicking a hyperlink does nothing.

I have browser.tabs.opentabfor.middleclick = false and in the options menu, "open links in tabs instead of new windows" is unchecked. Additionally I have set browser.link.open_newwindow = 2.

Can anyone help me here? This is driving me slightly batty.

Please look at the attachment, the last two titles just can't fully displayed as they are too long. But even I edit the title to make it as short as possible and recognizable, they are still not short enough to be shown fully. How to set it? I want to let them fully displayed no matter the length. I do not find it by the add-ons and also by searching the firefox dates. This nerves and disturbs me very much. Also my virus program must stop always links which want start themselves, like "https://bbcdn-static-mbrdsp.ibillboard.com/ad/adTag_v6.min.js" or"https://sportscubecdn-wqps7yvkz.stackpathdns.com/....". I am a long time user of FF but since the last updates the home page setting in options does not save or work. Keeps giving me a blank page. If I use the home icon on the tool bar, it is correct but on start up, only a blank even though it set for something else. Seems odd that it won't work correctly on startup. I am using win7 64 bit PC.

Hello, I was wondering is it possible to get Reader Mode on PC to fill the whole screen space instead of the stripe in the middle? Its quite useful for getting only the relevant text out of a web page and yet it feels the amount of screen space that's actually useful is becoming less and less lately. (I'm hoping for a solution that doesn't include any scripts, but if they're necessary I'd welcome any solution really)

I have a dual screen windows 10 system. I use both Firefox and Chrome. Chrome is set as my default browser because I use many Google apps. However, when I search the internet and open non-google programs I use Firefox. I would like to have Firefox always open on a designated screen. Is there a way I can set Firefox to always default to a designated screen.

I look forward to your answer.

A while ago firefox started to take over as the program for mailto:. I even tried to stop it by changing firefox mailto to use outlook. Didn't help. I don't often use mailto, but I noticed it when I started outlook it said it wasn't the default program for everything and asked if I wanted to set it. Kept happening. Eventually I looked into default options for outlook and found mailto was set to firefox.

THEN I opened a downloaded PDF from a different browser and it opened it in firefox. I have Nuance PDF. And yes, now often when I start that it tells me that it's not the default.

And yes, I have or set the program for PDFs in FF to be Nuance PDF.

Outside of stopping using firefox, how do I get it to stop inserting itself as the default program? YES, at times I set FF to the default browser; did some recent upgrade make it mean to also set it to the default for all programs, and how can I set it to the default browser (which I do for some things I want to run at times), without stealing all the progam defaults?

WIn7Pro, FF 78.0.1 (64-bit)

Tnx,

Adding New Filetypes to Download List

I am following directions on this page, which is supposed to be applicable to my version Firefox 78.0.1 on my Windows 10 Pro 64 system:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/change-firefox-behavior-when-open-file#w_adding-download-actions

But when I come to the subheading, "Adding Download Actions", it shows a dialog window which is unlike the one I get. Of the two images I've attached, the article shows the larger while I am offered the smaller. The article says the "Do this automatically" checkbox may be disabled, but doesn't mention it being absent: "Is Do this automatically for files like this from now on disabled? This can happen if the website's server incorrectly specifies the Internet Media type of the file. It also can happen if the server assigns "Content-Disposition: attachment" to the file. Could be the case here. Whether it is or not isn't important. What is important, is adding filetypes. I have no qualms with editing the registry if necessary. Can someone help me out with this?

This issue is common to all browsers, but with how customizable Firefox is, I'm hoping it might help me circumvent the issue somehow.

My screen resolution is 1920 x 1080, but I use Windows settings to scale elements to 125% because my eyes are bad and I want to see the Windows and other software's interfaces better. As a result, the inside of Firefox, websites themselves, are also scaled. My resolution is reported as 1536 x 864 pixels. In most scenarios, this isn't really a problem, since in theory zooming out to 80% restores a website's appearance to normal.

But while developing, it can be weird. For instance, when using mobile simulation mode. And the reflex of pressing Ctrl+0 to restore default appearance is deeply ingraned. Also when someone tells me there's a problem with the website at X zoom, I have to calculate what that zoom level is equal to for me.

So I'm wondering if there's something I can do, other than fiddle with zoom all the time, to see what my website actually looks like while keeping my interface enlarged.

Until recently, when I clicked on a pdf link, Firefox would load the PDF file as a preview, treating it (on the user end) much like any other webpage but with a download button available. If I then clicked on the download button, it would be saved in my downloads folder, and clicking the saved file in Firefox's download links would open it in my default PDF viewer (ie Acrobat). This allowed me to easily look at PDF files without cluttering up Firefox's downloads list, as well as quickly open a downloaded PDF in Acrobat.

Following a recent update to Firefox, these options seem to have been changed and I can't find a way to revert to the previous behaviour. It seems to be treating the in-browser function as a full PDF viewer, rather than a preview. I can set Firefox to open PDFs in Acrobat, but then it downloads every link I click on which happens to be a PDF and opens them all in Acrobat. Or I can tell it to open them in the browser, but then if I want to open a PDF in Acrobat I have to download it, then hunt for it in my downloads folder and open it there rather than directly in Firefox. It also clutters up my downloads list, making it harder to find slightly older downloads without going through file explorer.

Alternatively, I can tell Firefox to ask me what to do every time. This is a bit better (a new option "open with firefox" has been added), but still involves making a couple of extra clicks each time I open a PDF - and it still insists on downloading every PDF based link I click.

What makes this particularly strange is that the in-browser PDF viewer still has a "download" button, which has the traditional two "open with___"/"save file" options, even though as far as I can tell it will only display stuff it's already downloaded.

Is it possible to return to Firefox's previous behaviour, or is it gone for good?

I have two questions:

1st one:

Sadly I didn't know my browser had automatic updates on and now I got updated to 78.0.1. You added this nice feature that allows opening pdf files instead of downloading them or opening them in external software. very good, i needed that sooo many times already when pages forced me to download trash instead of letting me view in browser. My problem is, that I usually need to download files. Still I want to be asked everytime what to do

-> I want that whenever a download request for pdf happens, the "download file" is selected by default (instead of the "open pdf in browser"). Also I want to be asked so I am afraid firefox won't ask me anymore if I check the "always do this" checkbox. Is there a way to be asked about what to do with the pdf with a different default option than "open in browser"? Or is the checkbox exactly what I need to check? I just don't want to break my browser...
2nd one:

Since personal meetings disappeared we are using WebEx. Until my browser updated whenever I joined the meeting-URL a popup opened that created a "bridge" to the webex app where I would be connected to the room I just opened in browser. Since my browser updated these popups don't come up anymore which makes joining a webex room a ... little bit complicated. The same goes for discord -> before the update discord in browser asked for permission to use my microphone. Now I am not asked anymore if I want to share my mic. Nothing happens and I am muted in discord. Please tell me how to solve this. Thx in advance!

As the title says, every time I press ctrl, the bookmarks sidebar opens. I've checked what my shortkeys are and it shows that the bookmark sidebar should be opened with ctrl+b, but it opens and closes every time I just press ctrl. This makes it impossible to use any other shortkeys and it's driving me insane. Why is it doing this and how do I change it?
