Firefox new install on XP, problems trying to get same-version-Firefox old W2K profile to run.

I'm moving from a W2KproSP4 (Win2000, Windows 2000) machine to an XPproSP3 (WinXP) machine. I was running AVG 9.0 and Firefox 3.6.7 with FireFTP, NoScript, WOT, and screengrabber(?). I installed Firefox on the XP machine, launched it to create a profile, and closed it. I copied the old profile folder contents into the new one. On launch: "Malformed file" "Firefox could not install this item because "install.rdf" (provided by the item) is not well-formed or does not exist. Please contact the author about this problem." (This error disappears in Firefox Safe Mode.) Install.rdf is on the old drive at \Program Files\AVG\AVG9\Firefox. "alert" "Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory." When I click on Tools/Addons, "An error occurred during a connection to services.addons.mozilla.org:443. Can't connect securely because the SSL protocol has been disabled." I tried uninstalling AVG and Firefox and installing Firefox first. (That helped me with Link Scanner related non-launch on another XP machine.) Depending on which combination of old & new profile files I have, I get some combination of the above 3 errors and not launching at all. (It may show for about 1 second in Task Manager, then quit.)

P.S. I am posting this from my old W98SE machine, running Firefox 2.0 since it won't launch anything newer. I never did solve that mystery.

The upload speed of Firefox2 in win98se is very slow, in same PC, IE6 can upload fast (after tweak win98). Is there any method to make Firefox2 upload faster in win98 ? (I use win98se & Firefox 2.0.0.20) I can find upload speed tweak for others setup, e.g. IE6 with win98, IE6/7 & Firefox2/3 with win2k/XP, but can't find for Firefox2 with win98. Please help !

When I go to the Tools/Options section the Applications Tab is missing. All the others are there. I have tried running in Safe Mode but that makes no difference. My wife has a laptop (WinXp, updated) running Firefox 3.6.12 which we both use when away from home. She has more than a dozen saved tabs which of course reappear each time FF is started (and heaven help me if I were to close FF without them being saved!).

If a second instance is started, it shows just the home page - great. I'm not game to close the first instance and then the second, in case the saved tabs from i1 get buried (see above para).

By way of example, I have Eudora as a mail client on my desktop machine with two separate non-interacting instances. That's the sort of thing I'd like to achieve on her laptop with FF - a separate FF config/icon so that a completely unrelated instance can be set up and saved with its own data - not a dozen+ tabs, but not interfering with the SWMBO setup. Is this possible, and if so can someone tell me how to do it?

I should mention that the FF Profile Manager doesn't *quite* do what we would like - ideally two separate desktop icons, each linked to its own profile, with the equivalent of the "don't ask" selected for each so we don't need to manually select a profile at startup. It is possible that both instances will be concurrent.
