Hey folks, hopefully you can help with this mysterious issue!

I've been running Firefox successfully on my Windows 10 PC for a long while now. Last night, for some reason it simply ceased to work. New windows and tabs would not load any content. I also couldn't access the Settings at all (clicking on Settings in the browser menu produces no results or feedback.)

Yesterday, I had Firefox open all day (I usually have my computer on all day), and it was working fine. Around 8 or 9pm, I first noticed that none of my open tabs were loading any content, and the tabs had the "loading" animation playing. New tabs would also not load any content. I assumed it was an internet issue as I did see my internet connection get disrupted once or twice. I did not see anything (apps, etc) on my PC updating.

This morning I found Firefox was still not loading anything, although my internet connection was fine. I tried opening Chrome, and it ran just fine. Everything else that it is internet or cloud based on my PC is running fine too. So it seems to be an issue just with Firefox.

I have listed my steps to troubleshoot below, but I want to note one weird thing I observed: Even when Firefox is closed, and Task Manager doesn't show any Firefox processes open, my PC seems to think Firefox is running. For ex. while trying to uninstall Firefox or delete certain files, I would get a warning to "close Firefox first" or "can't perform this action while app is running." After seeing these, I would again confirm that Firefox appears closed and Task Manager shows no related tasks.

My PC build: - Windows 10 Home, 64 bit - Version 20H2 at start of issue (updated to 21H2 during troubleshooting) - OS build: 19044.1526

Things I have tried for troubleshooting already: - I have WebRoot on my computer due to my job, and I asked our IT staff if they could see WebRoot blocking anything related to Firefox on their end. They said it was not. - Used "Firefox Refresh" - Uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox - Cleared app cache / app data - Updated Windows from 20H2 to 21H2

After installing the beta FF 98.0b3 in order to work around the Webroot problem currently going on with v97, I've noticed that whenever I download something, the download popup window stays active until I click on something. I don't want to remove the download button because I want to monitor download progress, and at times, I DO want to look at specific downloads from time to time. But the fact that the window automatically pops up and stays there until I click on something is annoying.

I saw similar posts several years old about older versions which don't apply now.

So, is there a way to disable this thing without completely removing the download progress indicator from my toolbar?

Thanks again for the help!

Firefox updated automatically and stopped working correctly afterward. This included: instances of the browser not opening after closing all tabs (I have been unable to open Firefox again unless restarting/shutting down and booting up the pc again), webpages failing to load properly (seen in attached screenshot), links to websites or content like videos on YouTube failing to load if right-clicked and the option "Open Link in New Tab" is selected and must be clicked at least twice, otherwise they fail to load like in the screenshot, and hanging while connecting to some websites with certain addons active (namely google.com). I also have reason to believe trying to fix these issues crashed my computer by locking it into a perpetual loop of crashing, collecting error data, restarting, and crashing again. Going back to Chrome to write this, I have had no problems.

I have tried refreshing Firefox several times, disabled hardware acceleration in the options, reinstalled about three times after deleting all Mozilla folders on my pc, disabled browser addons one by one to determine if one of them was causing problems, and removed and added Firefox to my firewall's allowed connections at least seven times by now.

tl/dr; Firefox broke after it automatically updated and I tried every solution I could search up. The browser still isn't working. Please help?

I opened Firefox today like I do every day and every tab I open gives me nothing. I thought the internet might be down, but after talking with co-workers, they have internet. I opened Chrome and Edge, and can connect to websites with no problems. I can't do anything on Firefox right now. I couldn't even connect with support through Firefox. I restarted my computer twice hoping that would be a good starting point, but no change in Firefox.

When closing Firefox after fresh install or computer restart, the app will not open and instead opens in the background as 7 different processes, also when it does open after fresh install or restart, no websites will load nor can I access any setting or options for Firefox itself, I tried to install an old update from 2017 I had saved and that installation worked fine including accessing setting and websites, but after closing the app and opening it again, the problem came back

Everytime I open firefox it will open in task manager but won't actually open in a window. Everytime I restart my computer firefox will only open one time and will not load anything, not even the home page, and won't allow me to interact with it beyond clicking the settings and them not actually doing anything. I've uninstalled it multiple times, I've done clean uninstalls/reinstalls, I've removed all my extensions. Literally nothing is working at all. How do I fix this

So I have no idea what happened besides a windows update since the last time I used the browser. I had 3 tabs open when I left yesterday for work and when I came back none of the 3 were loading just white screens and the loading icon next to the website just constantly spins I left it loading for 2 minutes before giving up.

I decided to try clearing out the cache, cookies, history, and basically all the options but passwords. Then I went ahead and tried again still no improvement. If I try opening a new tab and closing the others the same thing no difference.

I then noticed a windows update was going so I let it finish then restarted the computer and when it was ready checked firefox again and still nothing. So now I'm using Edge to type this out and am having no issue getting to any site that I was trying earlier.

Is there anything else I can do? Or is it like I gotta wait for a firefox update to come out?

Last night Firefox was running fine. I closed everything and left for a couple of hours. When I came back and opened Firefox everything was blank. There was a blank open tab, no response to any input in the address bar, nothing. So, I closed the window and tried again - this time it didn't even open. However, Task Manager showed Firefox running with 6-7 entries, all of which I used "End Task" on. I rebooted the computer and nothing had changed. It wouldn't open but it showed up a few times in Task Manager. I tried a Refresh - no change. I tried reinstalling - no change. I uninstalled and tried reinstalling - no change.

Finally, in desperation, I uninstalled, used "RegEdit" and deleted every entry I could that had "Firefox" in it. Then I reinstalled fresh - Firefix Installer didn't know it had ever been on my computer. Same result.

Honestly, I'm completely out of ideas. I can't try anything in Firefox because it won't open and I've deleted all the files and reinstalled and still no joy. Obviously, there is some file it's trying to use that is corrupted or something that isn't just a part of Firefox.

Any suggestions???

The Firefox browser stopped connecting to the internet right after the end of a Zoom meeting, on the computer that I use all the time. When I click the link, the start page will slowly come up, but none of the links work on this one computer. Otherwise, I am able to connect to the internet with other browsers and with Firefox on other computers.

Could the meeting connection have done something?

Thank you,

So I got on my computer today, and I tried to open Firefox, but it wouldn't open, I would get a loading icon on my cursor and then nothing. So I restarted my computer, same issue. Reinstalled Firefox, same issue. I then reinstalled after having deleted the %appdata% folder for Mozilla, but that also changed nothing. So I looked in Task Manager, and it would just open instances of Firefox as a background app no matter how many times I clicked. I've also tried using other browsers with no success. (Also, I'm runnning Windows 10, 64-Bit version, and had not installed any programs recently before Firefox stopped working.) I would greatly appreciate if I could get some assistance with this because I prefer Firefox much more than Microsoft Edge which is the only browser I'm able to use right now.

Have Win 11 running Firefox no problem...until the Firefox update this AM, after which the browser crashed and either (a) won't reopen at all, or (b) reopens to the browser page but nothing works (can't open extensions, troubleshoot, browse, bookmarks, etc). Tried deleting and reloading, saw online there might be conflict with Webroot so disabled that, still the same issue.

No error msg, just won't open.

The only thing that happened yesterday was there was a Windows update (Windows 10). Now today when I try to start Firefox, it takes 4 - 5 clicks before it will even open (actually now I can't get it to open) ... but I did just change the setting to run it in compatibility mode with Windows 8 and things seem to be working correctly. Before I did this, when Firefox would open, I could not search - even in Firefox for add-ons, help, etc. All I would get is a white screen. I tried clearing my cache and even uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox but had the same issue. It seems to be "fixed" right now in compatibility mode, but it also seems like future issues may arise. Thank you for any insight!

Hello, I have not been having any issues with Firefox for about a year. Yesterday morning, when I came into the office and loaded up Firefox the same way I had been for a year, it was not behaving in the way I would expect. Web pages were not loading and I wasn't able to 'refresh' pages in the normal way. Firefox is basically unusable for me at this point.
