In quite an extensive search I can only find two pieces regarding my concern about firefox syncing (for a bit of simplicity I will also assume in this inquiry I am only talking about bookmarks). Could the experts out there kindly put some meat on my bones of uncertainty?

References: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1027527#answer-646401 How does FF sync across 3 open instances on 3 pc's? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1000440 FF 29.0.1 Sync function - what does it actually do?

I can understand a perfect synchronization can take place if all devices are kept turned on all the time. That would mean real time (virtually) simultaneous syncing. For example, a deletion (of a bookmark) on one device would delete on the others and an addition on one would add that same bookmark to the other devices. If I have got that wrong then please correct me there. If I have got that correct then what happens when one or all devices are switched off and then at staggered times in the future switched on when changes may have been made to the bookmarks in different ways at different times on those different devices. From this answer given below I get the sensation that there is some kind of aggregation going on but it certainly is not clear to me. Below reference from: How does FF sync across 3 open instances on 3 pc's?? “Only on the first sync of the first device will everything overwrite the account in the cloud. Everything else will merge and all three will continue to be merged. What does this mean, if you delete on one, it will delete/resolve on another when it syncs if you have bookmarks selected to sync. Senario answer: The second pc will merge with the 1st and the first will be a mix of both.” In practical terms it is very inconvenient to have old deleted bookmarks be re-added to a device when wanting to say goodbye to that bookmark forever. Is there a way to retain what would be a master set of bookmarks on one device and update later those only on what are deemed secondary devices. I realize you can switch off the synchronization and you can also keep a profile copy or a full copy file of bookmarks and start the whole thing again by deleting the sync account and starting afresh. But my problem is that I continually forget to turn off the syncing on a device when I close down and then bingo before I know where I am an old deleted bookmark reappears by automatic syncing from another device because that bookmark is retained in the cloud. Or am I missing something obvious?

Every time reinstall on my main computer, sync appears to lose all its cloud-data? AKA sync will not pull any data down. Windows 10, build 1511.

This happens every time I have to reinstall my system. In the past I would copy my profile over but this is not an available option. I lost over 200, distinct, bookmarks.

This particular time, I did not setup my profile immediately as I had other environment setup concerns so I let firefox go while rebuilding my environment. Afterwards I went in and deleted the start up profile, ran firefox.exe -p created a new one and set up my sync immediately with the same account I had been using less than 36 hours before. It has been setup now for over 12 hours and still nothing. In case it matters, I did have to do a password reset in between loss of old system and start of this system.

Recovery options? I will do whatever is asked...

What is the point of sync if I can not download my data? I have seen it said that it is not a backup solution, OK, so then how does it work? When a new browser is connected it connects to Mozilla sync and then sync asks other devices for their data?

I am royally pissed at this, as far as I am concerned this is pretty much a deal breaker for me. Firefox is better in a lot of ways than chrome, but Mozilla made a big deal about firefox sync, but if it never works than what is the point? The old system worked and was reliable for me. This new system has been nothing but trouble... Why should I use something if a heavily advertised component appears to be broken?

I have multiple computers, and I don't know which one is providing the "base" sync, or which one is being upgraded. It appears that new changes (an added extension, or bookmark) gets "erased" by something. There does not seem to be a way to say PC 'A' is the device to sync to or, to say PC 'B' adds a bookmark and I want it reflected on 'A' and 'C.'

It would help if I could access or see the sync so that I could figure what is forming the "base" of my synced data, or if I could edit that directly to push to all devices.

Should you disconnect your Firefox account before you use “Refresh Firefox”? (Prevent the syncing account from remembering the refresh)

I know that you can use the profile folder that Firefox creates to restore after you refresh. I’m just wondering if you can disconnect your Firefox account so that the refresh may not be considered. Then after you connect, all the extensions come back.

Chrome has:

> Restore settings to their original defaults.

I’m not sure how it works in Chrome, but I kept my account signed-in during the refresh. When I came back, the extensions were disabled, and I just turn them back on, whereas I think that all the add-ons were removed in Firefox.

Today I reinstalled my PC. I already used Firefox Sync, so assumed all my bookmarks would be safe. So, I did the following:

-Reinstall Windows (8.1) -After successful installation of Windows, I installed Firefox. I lost my account info (username/password), so I needed to recover/reset the password. So I did. No problem here. -After resetting the password, I logged in to Firefox Sync. I noticed all my bookmarks are gone

What happened?

Very basic synching question about the FF synching add-on process after installation

Which set of data is considered the “base” data when synching with Firefox synch. Is it the data that is on the server, the local data of the first device you began synching with (a kind of master set of data), the local data on the latest device you connected to the server, the local data on the device where you last made a change of the data or perhaps something else entirely?

With Xmarks (bookmarking add-on) you have the very clear options per device that you connect with to a) merge the 2 sets of data (local and server) b) call the server to overwrite the local data or c) overwrite the server data with data from the local device.

Is there any similar possibility with FF synching?

Similar to previous question https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1091574 I have several user accounts on one PC (Win7) that I would like to sync across to the Win 10 installation on the same PC, and maybe to other devices in the future. I have this for my own system, but when I try this for another account I get an error "There is another account on the PC - do you want to merge accounts" - see attached screenshot. Of course I do not want to merge data.

The "solution" in the referenced question above suggests renaming the computer for each Sync account. Where and how do I do this? The question about merging accounts comes before I have a chance to enter Sync settings, such as the device name.

Hi everybody, I wanted to try the Sync Feature today after downloading Firefox for developers, but I actually choose the wrong e-mail address. Let's my account is me@you.com, I wrote mee@you.com without noticing.

The thing is, I was panicking since I had all kind of private info in that browser, even corporative info, but know someone else in the world has full access to that info!

I tried from 2 different computers to sync and sign up with another account that I have, and once that you sync there is no way to delete your info from the browser of the person that got the confirmation e-mail!!

I tried already: - unsyncing the e-mail from my browser - I tried to delete the account but it didn't let me in (it was waiting for the e-mail confirmation to be received), and when I tried it back, it would tell me that the password was wrong (i.e. The guy even changed his PW!!!) - deleted some profile folders that someone recommended in an old post.

If anyone has an idea please let me know. If not, if at least can someone tell me how to report this to the Sync Team, also let me know please.

I needed to re-configure my PC due to the adware: "getconstantfun"

Not a big issue to do, including the reloading of software BUT when i re-installed Firefox and asked it to sync, ALL is blank, no apps, no bookmarks, no setups. I did not do a backup or export as not need in past.

Even though I did log-in and try a sync, It is like I have a brand new, blank setup.

Any ideas?

Cheers Mark
