In a moment of madness that I can’t recall why or how, I thought I was doing some legitimate update on my MacBook Air. Instead I must have installed some add-on or extension to Firefox. When I open Firefox I get this as a browser and not my usual Google window:

http://search.searchpulse.net/?_pg=CC8A940F-0229-54AB-BB6E-E5220BFF983A&affid=dhm_A0SLV_set_bfr_H&type=h&pid=dhm

When I Google with Safari how to dump it, none of the instructions fit Firefox - only Chrome and Safari. AppleCare wouldn’t help, saying it is a 3rd party app and to contact Firefox. The Google search also hinted broadly that this problem could have or will compromise my computer.

Firefox is my browser of choice for well over a decade. My password manager (with over 150 contacts) is linked to Firefox. I want to use Firefox but need to dump this unfortunate add-on or extension.

How do I dump this junk?

Also, have I compromised my sensitive info on my computer?

Tom

Hi,

I have several websites where news are posted daily. In average around 800 feeds per day per one website. The websites DON'T support RSS and when i was trying some free of charge services like TheOldReader, etc I got error message saying that website(s) don't support feeds at all. I really want to get those news that are being posted to my gmail email account IMMEDIATELY (this is the most important!) when they occur regardless if i have computer ON or OFF. I was trying different website updates delivery services but it didn't work. May i ask what else could i do so i wouldn't need to check every single website every single minute if there is any new post or not? Why did i say minute? Because timing is very important - i must get it as fast as possible. Example of such website is:

https://uk.reuters.com/news/archive/bondsNews

and many more. Whenever something new is posted to this exact website and NOT main one uk.reuters.com, I would like to get email message to my gmail with appropriate title and content including redirect link.

Could anyone please tell me what can be done?

Thank you in advance.

The solution below no longer works. My current version of Firefox is 64.0.2

When did this problem start for you?

On Mac, Firefox 56 ratcheted up the security sandbox, limiting which files pages can use on your system. This apparently prevents Firefox from using font files in a "suitcase" or "Adobe Type 1" format. The developers are aware of this and some fixes were made in Firefox 57, but they might have missed some font types or unexpected font file locations.

To see whether this is the problem, and as a temporary workaround, you can reduce the sandbox security level back to what it was in Firefox 52-55 as follows:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste sand and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the security.sandbox.content.level preference and change the value from 3 to 1 and click OK

That change won't take effect until the next time you quit and restart Firefox

For example, if I try to purchase something on bestbuy.com, the page hangs and I cannot close. I'm using 64.0.2.

It seems as if there is a page approval of some kind required, but it is not displaying on any windows. The reason I think this is because I get the same audible tone when I try to do anything on the browser as I would get if there was an unanswered pop-up that needed to be dismissed.

The bookmark all tabs option in the right click context menu has disappeared, the one that usually appears when you right click a tab. You can still do it by clicking on select all tabs, and then bookmark selected tabs, but as someone who has a lot of windows open with multiple tabs in each, this is somewhat time-consuming. Where is the option to bring back the original button?

As for this feature, it's nice that you can bookmark specific tabs, but I don't understand why the original button had to be removed to make way for it, both options would be good. I think more people will probably bookmark the entire session rather than spending time clicking on each individual tab they want to save, though that's just a guess.

Well, I've been doing Firefox sync for a long time, and it seems to work pretty well. But I'm a little confused. What EXACTLY is going on? Note: I do NOT want to know how to set up sync. I know that.

First question. When sync is automatic, when exactly does it do it? I pull down and do "Open menu" with the three bars, and then hover over the sync arrows-in-the round. It might say "Last sync: 5 minutes ago", and it might say "Last sync: 5 seconds ago". Nothing happened on my Firefox five seconds ago or five minutes ago. So who told it to sync? What determines when it is supposed to sync? I presume Firefox automatically does a sync if you change a bookmark or password.

Second question. What exactly is a sync? I gather that if the sync file (containing bookmarks and everything) in the cloud is younger than the local sync file, the local sync file will be replaced by the one in the cloud. If the sync file in the cloud is older than the local sync file, that sync file in the cloud is replaced by the local one. Is that what's going on? That is, it's all about the time stamp? Do not tell me "Sync lets you share all of your data and preferences (such as your bookmarks, history, passwords, open tabs and installed add-ons) across all your devices." I know that.

Third question. Let's suppose I want sync to ONLY be manual. As in, it will ONLY sync when I do Tools>Sync Now. How do I set it up for that?

Firefox is beginning to become more of an annoyance than it is worth - most of the reason for this is the continual string of updates, messages, click bars and pop ups it shows on start up.

No these are not spam or bad add ins, they are programmed interruptions inherent to FF.

Users of FF want to get on and do things. Having to close windows with news about the latest update (and there are soooo many updates), or news that the opml feed is now on your desktop (another thing to waste time attending to) or messages about privacy or messages about syncing pages and settings or pop up messages about how FF is private etc are just plain annoying.

It is getting to the point where I expect to wait longer for FF to start and then have to wade through cruft, than it takes to boot the entire Windows 10 OS and deal with the Ms cruft on the log in screens.

If people want to learn, then they will look stuff up. So seriously - stop popping up tabs, notices, messages, dialog boxes and other cruft. Let the users just get on with using FF rather than putting up with cruft about using FF.

FF is now officially slower to start than every other browser we have and slower than me booting an entire windows 10 pc - all because of continuous updates which don't seem to do anything for me - or most users. oh sure, you can say its for security but if you are patching security holes as regularly as you are updating FF then there is something terribly wrong in your programming standards and coding methodologies - not to mention test process.

Its a trend to tell people about your product - but its one that annoys users. We just want to get on with using whatever - so please get out of our way and let us just use the product.

I like FF - but I liker it a lot less than I used to as its now annoying the crud out of me almost every day.

My 10c worth.

I installed the most recent update a week ago, problems opening pages I had visited many times previously, too many pages, became frustrating and did a system restore to previous date then Firefox would not open at all, just kept crashing, options were to open in safe mode or refresh Firefox, tried to open in safe mode, it would not open even in safe mode so tried to refresh Firefox, got a message saying it was importing bookmarks etc but when it finally opened EVERYTHING is gone. Years of saved passwords for multiple pages, no history, no bookmarks, nothing nada...feeling pretty hopeless...HELP?
