Why does version 4 force you to use the latest Java and not allow you use your existing/current version?

I'd been using version 3.6 with Java plugin 6.0.20. The Brocade switches that I manage work properly with this version of Java. When I upgraded to Firefox version 4 I was prompted to install a Java plugin version 6.0.25. This version of Java does not work with the switches. I don't understand why I have to use the latest plugin and why I can't use the current version that is installed.
I've since gone back to version 3.6 and Java 6.0.20.

Most recent changes were to install addons Certificate Patrol and Perspectives. I reverted to a profile saved before they were installed but that made no difference. The troubleshooting data below is without the two addons.

Firefox is not remembering my password even though it asks me to remember it each time I visit a particular site. Firefox remembers my passwords for all other sites just fine. I looked in the Password Manager and I can see the password listed, but for some reason Firefox does not remember the password when I go to log into the site. Why isn't the password being remembered even though it is listed in Password Manager?
keep getting this warning:See below. seems to be mainly to do with bbc website, although maybe others. Have got rid of most addons etc to try to stop this, don't have chrome.

- Most of the plugins it finds are "unknown" (despite the fact that I know where every one of them came from!)
- It doesn't register that I've already updated all the plugins that it can find
- And in case anybody from this plugin check project is reading this, please, please add in a way to stop this check from running on startup. I know you want to help, but you're just annoying the userbase.

Other people are registering the same complaint at the Hotmail forums, so it's not an issue on my end, and it's definitely not just a cacheing issue or anything like that.

People using Firefox 3 and 4 are having problems.
Also, i downloaded Forefox 4.0.1 and it was not fully compatible with Kaspersky - has this problem also now been resolved?

I have FF v4 and want to upgrade to v5. But despite my searching, I cannot find any instructions on how to upgrade. Why do S/W developers for the most part fail to provide this essential information?
Specifically, does one do an in-place upgrade (install to existing v4 directory)? If so, are all the user's settings/ preferences/ configurations/ bookmarks/etc. preserved? Or does one install to a new directory? If that is the case, how does one then incorporate their former customizations into the new install? Also, what happens to add-ons, plug-ins, etc.
Install instructions, including upgrade instructions, should be readily available on the same page where the download link is!
Please advise. I'm anxious to upgrade, but without this basic information, I will not feel comfortable in doing so.

Tried unzipping extensions into their own dirs, using -install-global-extensions, -ms options. Nothing happens & only users' extensions are recognized (and disabled). Cannot upgrade without global extensions.

It started couple of months ago. In the beginning it crashed only on some Youtube channels. Like if I clicked o a video that was on a proper channel like "BBC", the page loaded but in the middle it suddenly crashed with the error "Firefox has encountered a problem and needs to close". Then when I use to restart firefox it would say that it probably happened because of a new tab. Now I am fed up. The problem has grown from certain youtube channels now to Yahoo mail, some other news websites today even Facebook! It logs me in to Fb but if I open a Fb page in a new tab it crashes. Now I even can't use Fb. I don't know whats wrong. I've tried the Firefox help and got my Crash Signature and now am posting the most recent one along with this Q.
