As captured in the long thread "What's the difference between ALLOW and ALLOW for a SESSION?”, with a lot of handholding from jscher2000, I managed to set custom choices for privacy and security the way I wanted on my mac computer (blocking all cookies in all windows, with exceptions saved for ALLOW, ALLOW for SESSION and some for BLOCK). To accomplish this, required enabling deletion of cookies when Firefox closes.

My assumption based on information I got in the above mentioned thread, was that even when deletion of cookies is checked for when Firefox is closed, cookies for websites identified as exceptions with ALLOWED, are not deleted.

However, this is not what happens. A specific example is tripcheck.com, which stores custom itineraries for cameras in cookies. I setup quite a few of these custom itineraries and saved them and they were OK until I closed Firefox, when they were deleted, as the cookie was deleted. This website is setup as ALLOW in the Exceptions list.

As explained in the above mentioned thread:

"(2) Scenario Two

[X] Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed (checked)

Firefox shortens cookie expiration to session only unless the site has an ALLOW permission in the exceptions list. “.

I am more confused than ever, the settings do not appear to be working the way they are meant to work, not only for session cookies but also for what should be "permanent".

Am I doing something incorrectly or am I misunderstanding how setting should work?

If cookies of websites setup for ALLOW are deleted when Firefox is closed, the setting is defeating what I am trying to accomplish: saving cookies for websites that I use and save data in cookies (such as recognizing the computer, what’s needed for 2 step authentication, etc.).

Thanks.

Hey team, I would like to know if there is a way to "name" the firefox window? I have multiple theme windows (for instance, one is for all recipes, one is for all news pages, one is for all online classes) with multiple tabs open and would like to find a way to navigate between them in an easier way. Naming them would be lovely, so I could name the window "recipes" and find the right one easier in the dock.

Anyone knows a trick? If it doesn't exist, any way to hint to the developers that this would be helpful? :) It could be just me though :)

Thank you for your thoughts,

Kata

I have "Restore previous session" checked but when I restart my computer Firefox does not start with the previous session. Currently I have many tabs open and need to restart Windows but I looked in my profiles folder and do not see any of the session files and backup folders.

Why are the session files (sessionstore.jsonlz4, recovery.jsonlz4, recovery.baklz4, previous.jsonlz4, sessionstore-backups) missing from the profile folder?

I can't restart Windows because I don't want to lose my tabs. How do I get Firefox to save the session to disk?

I was using firefox just fine, watching a youtube video when suddenly my video froze. I refreshed my webpage and youtube altogether will no longer load. I'm met with a white screen.

My firefox browser will no longer load most websites I try to go to. (neither will Chrome, but Edge seems to work just fine).

Now when I try to google something, I get a white screen. I try to go to reddit or other websites and i'm met with a white page filled with unicode characters. My browser was working JUST fine about an hour ago and out of nowhere it will now load nothing. I'm at my wit's end trying to figure out what is going on.

Society6.com is the ONLY website I can get firefox to load right now. I would attach screenshots but the website my screenshots get stored on WON'T load with firefox. I'm writing this from my macbook as, once again, firefox will not load any webpage I try to load up (except Society6 for whatever reason).

Any and all information/help would be greatly appreciated, i'm by no means a tech/computer guy so i'm really out of my element here. I'm more than happy to answer any further/clarifying questions people may have. Thank you.

I am reading an article published by InfoSecInstitute. It explains why cookies can be a security and privacy risk (copy of part the article below).

With this in mind, '''I am wondering how wise it is to keep any cookies that do not expire quickly on their own, but particularly those kept to “help” (for convenience) to avoid MF authentication. If hijacked, the hijackers could get access to what they should not have.'''

Do I understand correctly that not deleting cookies on the computer can open it up to hijackers? If so, is cookie hijacking a frequent occurrence? It seems that there are many methods to hijack cookies. There are websites that do not use HTTPS. Does using VPN help?

"It’s not like you can get a virus from a cookie; after all, they are just simple text files and do not contain any sort of executable. Yet, depending on how cookies are used and exposed, they can represent a serious security risk.

For instance, cookies can be hijacked. As most websites utilize cookies as the only identifiers for user sessions, if a cookie is hijacked, an attacker could be able to impersonate a user and gain unauthorized access.

This may happen in several different ways:

Capturing cookies over insecure channels: Any cookie related to authentication should always be transmitted securely, but that is not always the case. One example is cookies without a security flag. When a cookie is set with the Secure flag, it instructs the browser that the cookie can only be accessed over secure SSL/TLS channels. If the secure flag is not set, a cookie can be transmitted in cleartext — for instance, if the user visits any HTTP URLs within the cookie’s scope. This would allow an attacker eavesdropping network traffic to easily capture the cookie and use it to gain illegitimate access.

Session fixation: This is another attack that allows an attacker to hijack a valid user session. This time, it exploits a limitation in the way the web application manages the session ID. For example, if an application allows a session token in the query parameters, an attacker may send a user an URL with a specific session ID included in its arguments. Now, when the user authenticates by using this URL, the attacker can hijack the session.

Cross-site scripting (XSS): Another way to steal cookies is using cross-site scripting to exploit websites that allows users to post unfiltered HTML and JavaScript content. For example, if a user clicks on a malicious link posted by an attacker, it may execute the JavaScript code and cause the victim’s web browser to send the victim’s cookies to a website the attacker controls.

Cross-site request forgery (CSRF): This is a type of attack that exploits a website by making it execute unauthorized commands that are transmitted from a user that the web application trusts. In a CSRF attack, the attacker’s objective is to use an innocent victim to unknowingly submit a maliciously crafted web request to a website that the victim has privileged access to. Since the victim is already logged, any request coming from his browser will be deemed as trustworthy and be executed.

For an CSRF attack to work, an attacker must first identify a reproducible web request that executes a specific action — for example, changing a password on the target page. Once such a request is identified, a link can be created that generates this malicious request and that link can be embedded on a page within the attacker’s control. Even worse, it may not even be necessary for the victim to click the link. For instance, it may be embedded within an html image tag on an email sent to the victim, which will automatically be loaded when the victim opens their email.

Cookie tossing: A cookie tossing attack is based on providing a user with a malicious cookie that has been designed to look like it came from the targeted site’s subdomain. Of course, this becomes especially problematic when a website allows untrusted people to host subdomains under its domain. When the user visits the target site, all cookies are sent, both valid and the ones appearing to be from subdomains. In this attack, the ability to take over a session is quite limited, because the attacker can only write information, not read anything. However, cookie tossing can be used to set arbitrary cookie values that, in some cases, can be used for a CSRF attack or an XSS injection, depending on what the main domain does with the content of the cookie.

Cookies may also represent a severe risk to privacy. "

Video DownloadHelper Version 7.4.0 Browser locale: en-US Production build Built on Tue Dec 15 2020 17:14:16 GMT+0100 (Central European Standard Time) Build options: browser=firefox

I used to be able to record mainly music from YouTube and some other sources using video download helper with the Firefox add-on.

It used to direct me sometimes to using the companion app, then at other times not.

The thing is now that it starts to record with a blue numbered disc showing. It gets almost to the end of the download, then the circle turns red and I get the following type of error messages – see below.

I also do not have the same layout on the 3 colour disc download helper button.

Updated the add-on but cannot find any specific help.

Would be very grateful for a simple fix, or complicated, that – OR, is there a better product??

Seasons greetings

Bonjour,

Cordialement.

I am having trouble logging into my bank's website from Firefox. It's worked fine for several years and I have no clue what triggered it all of a sudden. Furthermore, I can log in just fine from various other browsers.

I have Google around on the issue for awhile now, and have troubleshooted several different things based on what I've Googled, such as clearing all site cookies, data, cache, etc. Also I had a pop-up blocker add-on but I removed it and that didn't do anything. Lastly, I tried completely uninstalling Firefox and re-installing it without ANY add-ons, but it still doesn't work.

Details on what happens: I go to the log in page, and I put in my user and password and click to log in, and it does nothing. It just basically refreshes the page, so the page comes back up with blank user and password fields.

Any help/ideas on the matter would be much appreciated. Thanks.
