I have imap-email accounts with too many folders I have created. I wanted to reduce the folders' amount and move mails between folders. crtl-a selects all mail in a folder, then with the right click menu of the mouse copy or move etc. It just does not do that. Only a small amount of mails is transferred. Same with grab and move to the folder. I then tried to move the mails to a local folder, delete them and move them from the local folder to the destination. Same problem. They would not move to the local folder. Is there any configuration limiting the intended moves?

I'm not asking a question now; I already found the answer. I'm contributing an answer in case others run into the same problem I did. The archive function in Thunderbird was running painfully slowly. I remembered it as being fast, moving from local folders (from POP) to local archive folders quickly, but lately it had been slow, like seconds per message. And I had thousands of messages to deal with. This is on Windows 10 Pro.

The fix turns out to be in Settings -> Windows Security -> Virus and Threat Protections. It has an option "Cloud-delivered protection", which "Works best with automatic sample submission turned on". Now frankly that sounds like a major-league security hole to me, sending old private messages to Microsoft! Turning them both off fixed the problem. Now archive is entirely local and isn't held up by Windows mucking into the system and trying to make copies of private mail and send them to the mothership before moving them. I don't know how Windows "Threat protection" broke into the internal operation of T'bird but that was an easy fix once I found it, and the archive function is very fast, even moving thousands of messages at a time.

Why does a folder for my "flagship@..." account appear in two places? (See image.) The upper one is a "real" folder in that it contains messages. The one low in the folder list just contains a bunch of links to TB features--no messages.

I cannot understand why the lower "folder" is present for that one account, while the same is not true for my other email accounts. The only difference I can think of, is that the "flagship@..." account is POP3 while the others all have IMAP access.

Ideas?

I'm struggling to understand where Thunderbird stores everything on a Windows computer so that I can use my incremental automated backup system to keep things backed up.

This support article :

[- Where Thunderbird stores your messages and other user data]

only mentions about the <user>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles folder but there is also a <user>\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles folder that appears to be used and needed.

There is a ton of other conflicting 3rd party information out there so I'm hoping for a definitive answer here.

My question is : Can I backup just the '<user>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles and <user>\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles and be assured that I will be fully able to recover my email client in the case of needing a complete reinstall ?

Such an annoying problem with current version 128.5.2esr. On one notebook with Windows 11 Hone I install the latest version (no Thunderbird previously installed), works fine.

One another notebook with Windows 11 Home existing Thunderbird freezes. After startup it just hangs, using so much CPU, that the battery is half drained after 30 minutes. Then reinstalling does not help. The same issue persists.

I read that uninstall does not remove the profiles and that cause the issues. Is that possible. Feature request. Also it would be fine to have the option to remove the profile on uninstall, so the non-tech savy user has also a chance of using this client.

I was originally with Frontier as my service provider/email server. They have shifted this to Yahoo!. Receiving emails works fine for me, but I cannot get Thunderbird to send emails. I get two notifications when sending... 1) Login to server smtp.mail.yahoo.com with username ******** failed. 2)Send Message Error.

   Sending of the message failed.
Unable to authenticate t Outgoing server (SMTP)smtp.mail.yahoo.com. Please check the password and
verify the 'Authentication method' in 'Account Settings Outgoing server(SMTP)'.

I have checked the password dozens of times/tries. I currently have the authentication method set to 'normal password', though I have tried all choices. Type of security is SSL/TLS and port 465.

All of these settings work on my Android phone email app (all 3 accounts I have with Frontier that are hosted by Yahoo! work) I am at a loss. I hope you can help! thank you Jeff B.

Okay - was trying to find a way to reduce clutter in the menus (typically done by removing unused buttons); so I saw an option to edit the menu bar that appeared above my message window. Instead of editing the items in the bar, it closed the controls completely and as far as I can tell permanently. I can't find anything in settings related to this once-upon-a-time feature. And the button I was trying to remove is still there.

As to what to call this control - no clue; it is the "filer" row of buttons above messages - and was a control or two to the right of the buttons [Unread] [Starred] [Contact] ... . It was a funny icon, and another funny icon that hinted they allowed editing the items on the bar -- one option was a toggle to hide/unhide the bar, the second option had a few more choices if I recall right, but clicking it hid the entire hide/unhide and second control.

How do I get those back without a full system "restore settings to default" which essentially nukes my install.

See image for location of now missing controls.

I am using Thunderbird version 128.7.0esr on Windows 11 Pro. I moved my Mail folder (and sub-folders) on my local drive. I re-directed each of 4 email accounts to their new sub-folder. The emails are downloading from the email host's POP3 server. New email messages are not visible in any of the inboxes. The counter shows the number increasing when messages are downloading. Global search does not find the new emails. The new emails show when I right click on any of the inboxes and select "Search Messages" (From/Contains."@"). I tried manually removing the Inbox.msf from one account, but did not fix when I restarted. I tried the Repair Folder button (right click Properties on Inbox folder), but did not fix. I know the emails are on my computer, but I cannot get to them without the very cumbersome "search messages" function. Suggestions?

My wife's computer has problems printing from Thunderbird. Trying to print produces a message that says, "Your printer has experienced an unexpected configuration problem. 0x800706ba".

I thought the problem was related to her old printer, a Brother black-and-white laser printer, so I bought a new Epson ET-2800 series color printer, but the same message appears.

I have found a workaround. If I go to Settings in Thunderbird, clear the cache, and restart the computer, it will print on the next try, but later the same error message will appear on attempts to print. I have selected the "Clear cache at shutdown" option in Settings, but that doesn't help. The cache still has to be cleared manually.

I can print a test page with no problem, and I can print from other applications, so I assume that the difficulty is related to something in Thunderbird.

I might add that I use Thunderbird on my computer. Fortunately that problem has not arisen on it.

Suggestions for solving this problem will be appreciated.

1. I want that messages open when I click ONCE. Right now I have to double click which is a huge showstopper for folks who really need to work. Click once > email you want to read opens. That is fast, productive and accessible. Double click is a no-option. 2. I would want the layout exactly as in the advertised app on https://www.thunderbird.net/en-GB/ where we can clearly see three columns: Accounts | Messages LIST | Single Message. Instead, in my case, I can only open the message in new window, or new tab, which is again totally unproductive, and inaccessible.

How can I achieve the two goals please? Here is a screenshot from the advertisement as of how it should look, and as well one of how it actually looks on my machine

Thank you!

How do I set up a mailing list in this latest version of Thunderbird? In the past I was able to group people in my address book into various groups and then mass mail to a given group (mailing list).

I recently bought a new computer w/ Windows 11, installed Thunderbird just fine; but, I am unable to establish my previous groups/mailing lists.

Does anyone know of a way to doe this? I have looked at the help section on this, but its help advice is dated 2015 and applies to a much older version of Thunderbird. There is no "Address book > new> mailing group" option in this latest version of the program that I can find.

I have TBird version: 128.6.1 esr (64 bit).

I have several accounts and I want to back up just one of them. However, they all use the same folder (.../.thunderbird/<name>.default) for storage so Export only wants to store this folder. Drilling down using "Browse", I see that below that are all the folders stored as ".../.thunderbird/<name>.default/Mail/<My account>". If I just copy this folder, can I restore this account in the future if I copy it back to this location? I want to retain the contents as the account is going to be closed and removed from its server. Thank you.
