For the past 3 days, I've been locked out of using Thunderbird email. When I try to open it, I get a "Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Thunderbird. Do you want to restart now ?" "Yes/No" option pop-up.

This is infuriating. After several hours, I'm still no closer to being able to use Thunderbird again.

If I choose to restart, nothing changes and I just get the doom loop pop-up again.

If I install uninstall (via Windows Control Panel), again I get stuck with the "Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Thunderbird. Do you want to restart now ?" message.

I can find no useful advice in the Thunderbird help and forums. It's recorded as a known issue. But no viable solutions found.

Using Windows 10. Looks like Thunderbird tried to update to 115.16.2 on 28-Oct-24 (not something I requested).

Please let me know how I can fix it.

And do something to fix this bug (which is a shocker).

Hi. I'm having problems with reinstating my profile files after inadvertently letting a software update programme update Thunderbird, leaving me with a blank Thunderbird, i.e no accounts etc. I've tried copying the Profile folder from a backup of 2-3 days ago, but it insists on loading a different profile to the one i want (gasu8cec-default-release). How do I make it load the profile I want?

I have a profile on a disk from a Windows 10 machine that recently died. I have a Windows 11 laptop that I just installed Thunderbird on, and I tried a profile import from the tools. It was able to successfully import my address book as well as my local folders, but did not import my calendar events or my sub folders under my inbox. Is there any way for me to get this data imported? Thanks, Gary

I have been using thunderbird for years and have 2 lightning calendars. These are stored locally in home/.thunderbird on Ubuntu - currently 24.01.1LTS, TB version just updated to 128.3.0esr. About a week ago I stopped being able to save calendar events, getting the message

An error occurred when writing to the calendar Home! Please see below for more information. Error code: MODIFICATION_FAILED. Description: Failed to write to calendar file file:///home/alasdair/.thunderbird/Home.ics: Could not create unique file in `/home/alasdair/.thunderbird' (NS_ERROR_FILE_ACCESS_DENIED)

I have uninstalled and reinstalled thunderbird to no effect. As I am the only user of the machine all prcesses run as me, the .thunderbird directory is owned by me and I have all permissions on it, as I have for all files in the directory. I can create and edit files there no problem. I have no idea how to d=fix this.

Hi, I just finished writing a few lines of javascript to automate bookmark management. I tested my Addon using about:debugging > Temporary Extensions, and now I'd like to keep the extension loaded across firefox sessions.

What is the best process for doing this? I attempted to create a .xpi file but when installing via "about:addons > Install addon from file" I get the message "This addon could not be installed because it could not be verified".

What is Firefox's self-signing process for this? I don't want to have to install dev versions of the browser just to automate one task.

I have used thunderbird for many years and have installed various versions on many different windows machines. I just got a new PC running windows 11 and installed thunderbird 128.5.2esr. The local inbox folders show up but with no content (no subfolders and no messages found). My inbox folder is located on a dropbox drive so that I can read and save emails on different machines.

I wonder whether it is related to this version? I have installed thunderbird on a different machine about one year ago and it worked fine.

Thanks for your help.

I think started some time this year, I can't find a Firefox download that installs without admin rights from official website. The .exe and .msi options all require admin privileges.

1. Is there still a no-admin-rights version available? 2. If not, why was it removed? 3. Any plans to bring it back?

Long time thunderbird user but kinda at my wits end. I'm moving to a new laptop and I have noted that the export function does not like profiles larger than 2Gb. Mine is approx 10.5Gb. I followed what seems to be the suggested protocol

- install on new machine, don't create any account, close thunderbird - erase the profile folder and the profile.ini in the new install (I guess this is optional really) - close thunderbird on old machine - copy the protocol and .ini files from old machine to the new one. (there is only 1 file: 1rrz6vdm.default which

     seems odd maybe?)

- crank up the new thunderbird

Well, I get something, but basically it is a pale ghost of what is there in my old machine. Have tried dozens of variants on this process with no love.

Help? Thanks

[Note: I characterized this question as an "Installation and updates" issue (even though it is not per se about initial installation or updates) because moving a profile involves installation issues.]

Recently I moved my TB profile, for the second time in the past few months. This time I paid closer attention, and noted several things of interest (that may touch on some questions that remain undiagnosed in this forum):

  1. TB took longer to start up, as it could find none of the folders cached in folderCache.json, so rebuilt the cache from the new profile location before starting. (I only learned about this from the next effect.)
  2. The "Move to" "Recent" folders list was empty; this cached list only gets rebuilt from use (that is, from moving messages manually (not via filter) to destination folders). This effect led me to folderCache.json- and also may suggest why the OP in that question could not get resolution of his problem.
  3. The newly cached folderCache.json was 528 KB, compared to 365 KB at the old location -- and that, in turn, was 170 KB larger than the 195 KB size of folderCache.json at the original location. So each time the cache is rebuilt it grows perhaps 150~200 KB (size depending on the many-times-repeated path length).

What causes the file growth? Because each time it is rebuilt, TB checks through all of the cached folder paths, apparently guided by the mailboxes listed in folderTree.json (see image below). [I think TB just checks each path to see whether it is compatible with the current profile location. If yes, the path is cached for runtime; if no, the path is repopulated from the current profile location (which takes most of the startup time).] But TB never deletes the no-longer-valid paths; it just appends to what was already in the file, so that the list of cached folder paths just grows (thereby increasing TB's startup time, every time). The best way to get rid of the old stuff is just to delete folderCache.json and let it rebuild on the next startup, to reduce the time needed for subsequent starts.

Finally, my questions: In addition to folderCache.json (different timestamp in each profile, of course), there are four files which are the same in all profiles: folderCache-x.json, x={1,2,3,4} (see screenshot). These are apparently from actions prior to the profile relocations, as they are simply copied from one profile to the next, unrelated to changes in folderCache.json. Can someone tell me:

  1. What actions cause the creation of folderCache-x.json files?
  2. Why folderCache.json merely appends new folder paths without deleting the old ones?
  3. Why folder paths are specified explicitly (fully qualified) rather than relative to the profile path?

Thanks for any pointers.

Dear support/community, I'm a little confused on the support of 115 version of thunderbird. It has been kind of treated as a "esr" version, like below 115.16.0esr indicates.

https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/115.16.0esr/

I know firefox is stopping update until end of 1Q 2025, and my assumption that applies to all Mac, Windows and Linux and till then firefox will get high/medium CVE patches if impacted --- is this the right assumption?

I'm not sure about the situation of thunderbird. while I intend to believe similar to firefox, also told that 115.16 is the last 115 version.

Thanks.

Moving Thunderbird from an old laptop (W10) to a new laptop (W11). Doing this for a non-computer-literate friend. Old laptop (bought in 2016) is now running W10 but I assume it was originally W7 and upgraded at some point (by me).

I followed Moving Thunderbird data to a new computer which seemed straightforward. However when I copied the Profile across and restarted Thunderbird there was no data to be seen. I tried again just to be sure, including uninstalling and reinstalling Thunderbird. Still no joy. [There are support threads about this but they seem to be archived so I can't update them.]

Onwards and upwards. I tried the "export to zip file" option. This had a mild warning that if the Profile was more than 3GB it might (!) be better to back up instead. [Noting that I had already tried this and failed - see above.]

It produced the ZIP file eventually, at an impressive 15.8GB. I then tried to restore from it, but the Restore option refused to find it, showing a comment that the file must be not larger than 2GB. I refer the reader back to the note on the Export option.

I then noted that you could Import from another Profile. I had one of those saved from my first attempts to copy Profile -> Profile. So I tried this option and it worked.

I think my issue was that the old version of Thunderbird was 32 bit and the new version was 64 bit. In which case the document linked to above could do with an update to warn about moving from 32 bit to 64 bit and include the method that worked. [Subject to more testing by others to confirm the solution works reliably.]

The Export dialogue could also do with a much more specific warning, to align with the Import dialogue.

This is a brief summary of a very long day because shifting 15.8GB of data around between computers and in and out as well is incredibly tedious! :-( Noting that the ZIP file and the Thunderbird directory tree with the Profile in are both the same size.

I recently installed Thunderbird on a new installation of Ubuntu 24.04 using the "Installing Thunderbird manually" instructions. Everything works fine except that Thunderbird doesn't want to use the Thunderbird icon in the dock. Thunderbird opens and runs fine when I click on the Thunderbird icon, but it then puts a new default icon on the dock that looks like a gear instead of just "using" the Thunderbird icon to indicate that the application is running. I've attached a screenshot. When I close Thunderbird, the gear icon disappears.
