I’m experiencing a repeated problem with Firefox. It hangs after closing. The following happens:
1. ‘Close Firefox’ dialogue box opens, reading: ‘Firefox is already running, but is not responding. The old Firefox process must be closed to open a new window.’
I click ‘Close Firefox’. The the following happens:
2. ‘Profile Missing’ dialogue box opens, reading: ‘Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible’
The above process repeats, even if I create and use a new profile. I cannot close Firefox completely, in Task Manager. Always at least one Firefox remains open as a Background Process. When my laptop is shut down/restarted, Firefox will open once but pages load very slowly, if at all, even in a new profile. Once Firefox is closed (even using ‘Exit’, through the menu), the process repeats. It also takes many attempts to load Firefox Profile Manager.
I am using the most up-to-date Firefox on Windows 8.1.
Steps I have tried: Closing Firefox in Task Manager/Ending Firefox Processes. Restarting computer. Clearing cookies and cache. Restarting Firefox in Safe Mode. Uninstalling and reinstalling. Refreshing Firefox (keeping bookmarks, etc). Creating a new profile. Renaming profiles.ini folder (profilesOLD.ini). Scanned for malware (with Malware Bytes).
Threads that I’ve looked at on support.mozilla.org: Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems Firefox hangs or is not responding - Firefox hangs when you quit it Refresh Firefox – reset add-ons and settings “Firefox is already running but is not responding” error message – How to fix it Support Forum - Task manager won’t close firefox already running but not responding Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox Profiles How to run Firefox when your profile is missing or inaccessible
So far, nothing has resolved the issue, after hours spent trying. Please can someone offer a possible solution?
Thank you.

I accidentally deleted the Firefox app. Now, even when restoring from Trash, I get a "new" app. Settings and years of bookmarks are gone. HELP. Desperate.
Detail: My extensions disappeard and, before I knew it was a Mozilla glitch, I tried deleteting and then reinstalling Firefox. I didn't think about it, but by deleting it, I also lost years worth of bookmarks. I tried restoring the file from Trash, but I only got a new "blank" version of Firefox. ALL my settings, bookmarks, etc. are gone. I'm desperate to get my bookmarks back. Please help!!!

I sometimes receive notification that Fx can't update automatically and I need to download the update. Twice now, the update has deleted my profile on drive D, and replacing it with a new one on the default C: drive. Settings, options, addons all GONE! I finally had to restore my entire system from a backup. What's going on and how can I prevent it happening again?

I'm getting Profile Missing: Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible.
I don't have a caches folder I can remove the contents of the application support folder and nothing changes.
When I go to open the profile manager I get:
MyName$ /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -P Error: Access was denied while trying to open files in your profile directory.
I tried running Disk Utility but it froze the machine as it's a time machine disk and that slows it down immeasurably.
What's my next option?

I had to hard-reboot my Windows machine, and when I launched Firefox (Developer Edition) upon after boot, my profile was lost. I had to set up Firefox Sync again, browser toolbar settings were reset, extensions were present but all their data was wiped, my session was lost (except oddly for pinned tabs). Windows didn't show any chkdisk activity during boot (looked like a clean boot). I wasn't prompted to create a new profile, so it appears the profile directory still existed. I don't understand what happened, or how I can even diagnose the issue.
I have tried a number of recommended methods, and nothing has worked. History does not acknowledge anything before the Firefox update.

Hi I know I have asked this before, but it is still something I want to do. I want to prevent Firefox from automatically updating itself. I know there is a box for this in options but this doesn't prevent automatic updates: a known issue. I have tried all manner of about: config settings registry edits etc. but I still cannot prevent Firefox from updating. As Firefox apparently cannot update without removing all my settings addins etc. it becomes more and more like I am having to hold its hand each and every time. Gone are the days when software worked for you, now you have to sist back and continually waste time restoring settings and addins: but only if Firefox decides they remain of use, whether I want them or not. I then have to either start from scratch by manually reinstalling them, or find another as Firefox no longer lists them. I find this "we know better than you " attitude is unnacceptable. Does anyone else share my thoughts that software should do what the end user wants it to and not what the provider wants?

As above. FF installed the update despite the checked option to NOT install automatically. NO "old firefox" folder was created-anywhere. No other profile is present that has the old data. My adult daughter's grad school laptop. Years of bookmarks, logins and I do not know what all ARE GONE!! I allowed FF to download but NOT INSTALL-since it was not my machine and I wanted to avert any disaster (I, in fact, looked at the options first, to make sure) NOW WHAT?? Is that is a bug?? Why was there no "old FF" created? Why did it install regardless of instructions to the contrary. Is there some other place to look? She does not seem to have any automatic backups for FF profiles.

I have an iMac. Operating system is High Sierra 10.13.6. Firefox was running slowly today and a pop up window came up on the bottom of my screen and gave me the option of "refreshing" Firefox. I hit the refresh button, and it was taking FOREVER to refresh Firefox, so I clicked out of it (the little red button) mid-refresh. Ever since then, when I try to open Firefox, I get a message stating that Firefox cannot be opened because my profile is missing or deleted. Shortly after this happened, a folder appeared on my desktop titled "Old Firefox Data" which contains about 60 items. I did not create this folder. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox. I have also tried starting my iMac in safe mode, then restarting in regular mode. Was on the phone with Apple Tech Support for over an hour and they were unable to help. They are aware of the "Old Firefox Data" folder but they didn't know what to do with it. I am not tech or computer savvy. Other people have posted this exact question before, and answers have been provided, however I don't understand the answers or the instructions that supposedly solve this problem. This is why I'm asking this question again. I am hoping someone can help and provide a simplified answer or simplified instructions to solve this problem. Thank you.
