Hello, I would like to install an add-on from a file on my PC. The documentation says:

For advanced users: You can also install add-ons from a file. If you saved the installer file to your computer, (for example, an .xpi or .jar file) you can install the add-on using the gear icon in the upper-right area of the Add-on Manager Extensions panel. Select Install Add-on from file... from the menu, then find and select the file. My problem is that the gear icon does not appear anywhere on my panel.

There must be a new way to do it? Does anyone have a hint? My firefox version is 92.0.1 (64 bits).

Thanks!

I have looked at the FAQ for this subject and I suspect I am out of luck. I believe Tbird automatically backs up data and stores it in a "profile" file. As I was trying to save documents etc. on my old PC with a view to selling it I encountered a serious problem which caused me to take it in for repair. The shop reported a damaged drive and have saved whatever data they could before returning the old hard drive. I now have a new PC, have installed TBird from the internet but as I was not able to save the original profile, I have lost all of the folders with saved emails. Is there any way to recover that information? Presumably it's still saved somewhere under my profile? I would be grateful for any advice about that.

I have had a domain for several years that I used to forward e-mail to a free account I've had for decades. A while back the free account dropped its pop server and became web mail only, so I created a real e-mail account in my domain. The new pop server was simply mail.<domain name>.com:995. I updated the account in Thunderbird to use the new servers (I ended up forwarding e-mail from the old free account to the new one - reversing the original flow).

I've just changed my hosting company and have recreated my e-mail account with the new host and updated the Thunderbird account to point to the new servers.

I can send e-mail through their smtp server as smtp.<domain name>.com:465 but when I try to receive e-mail at pop.<domain name>.com:995, which their documentation says is correct, I get an error message about an invalid certificate for my free account's old pop server!

When I use the alternate pop server name of pop.<hosting company>.com:995, I get my e-mail. This makes the problem not urgent but it is annoying.

What I can't figure out is where is Thunderbird getting the old account server name from? The maildir actually still used the name of the old server (pop.<free account host>.net) so I tried renaming it (renamed the folder then restarted Thunderbird and pointed the account to the name of the maildir) but that didn't help.

Any suggestions?

BTW: I'm running Thunderbird 78.14.0 on Debian/Bookworm

I have had my thunderbird on a mapped network drive for a long time (NAS). It works fine, BUT I cannot update it so its running on an outdated version.

When I start it, it says updating, but after the updater quits, I am still on the same version.

Previously I have solved this issue by downloading the install file and running it.

However, when trying to do this now, my network driveletter isn't listed, only local drives. If I manually type in the path, it says I don't have write access, which is not true.

I have also tried running the installer as administrator without any further luck.

Firefox install fails because it cannot find VC Runtime140_1.dll I downloaded the dll but Firefox can't find it. Where should I put this .dll? The bulk of the program installs but it can't search on line.

This is a new Win 10 machine. I've updated and ran DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth then uninstalled Firefox, put the VCRuntime file in the Win Sys 32 drivers folder, restarted and reloaded Firefox. Still no love.

I'm at the end of the road...what next?

About a week ago, Thunderbird started giving me messages about an invalid security certificate for start.thunderbird.net. I've installed it here on two x PC's (both running Windows 7) but the message only appeared on one system. By pressing the Help' menu item I realised that the 'good' system is running ver 78 but the one giving me the messages is back at around ver 24. I've pressed the option to update but it says that no updates are available (probably too far out-of-date...)

If I uninstall Thunderbird and install the latest version, will I lose all my emails or should the new version find them okay?
