I wish to switch from a POP to an IMAP server with my ISP (with Thunderbird client). I can set up a new IMAP account but not using the same email address (my_name@server.ca) while the POP account still exists. Trouble is, I have tons of emails I need to keep and access with the new account. How do I backup those emails, delete the POP account, set up the new IMAP account and recover the emails? I have read the Thunderbird doc on how to do this, but it's not clear on how to back up and recover the emails. Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance, Doug

Upgrade from V52.esr to V81 - no Logins imported, no Fix working

I'm trying to upgrade from V52 ESR - kept for known and obvious reasons concerning addons compatibility - to a current V81. Copied the profile data from user/appdata/mozilla/firefox.../myprofile/*.* - including "key3.db" (in use), "key4.db" (don't know where this one originates from - shouldn't exist at all for versions < 57 or so) and "logins.json".

So far stumbled upon:

  • No Logins in new system visible. No master password set. After setting a new master password, still no logins visible.
  • This very forum here suggests - in many threads for version upgrades from somewhere in the 50s to up to the 70s - to simply copy the "key3.db" and "logins.json" and to delete the "key4.db" on the new system's profile. That does not change anything at all.

Am i forced to keep the V52, now not only by means of addons compatibility, but also by means of login manager compatibility?

What would the correct path to upgrade be? Would i have to install each and every in-between-version from 52 to 81 to be able to migrate? Will i run into the exact same trouble doing it that way, only burning daytime for nothing? Or is it guarantied to somehow get the logins data transfered to the current version? How did all the Millions of other users fare with that aspect? Is that an extremely rare case where users set a master password, so that developers decided to not care anymore about those nasty paranoids?

Server/Local Machine Synchronization Confusion

We have downloaded Thunderbird and gotten most settings set up. We can now send email and all emails that are present on the server have been copied to our local computer. That part is great!

However, we are wanting to understand better how to limit the synchronization. Currently, if we delete a message on the server, it deletes the message in Thunderbird and vice versa. All we want is for the messages to download to the local machine for use and backup. WE DO NOT WANT THE SERVER AND LOCAL COMPUTER TO MIRROR EACH OTHER. That's what is happening now. How do we set this up so that messages deleted on the server are still stored as backup on our local machines?

The reason this is important is that soon we will be changing to another server for this email address. We are afraid that we will lose all downloaded emails once this change takes place because the new server will not contain all of the emails that the old server had. As it is mirroring the server and local machine, we could lose everything downloaded. How do we adjust settings so Thunderbird in only downloading new message but not mirroring the server. Thank you all so much for any assistance.

Due to Yahoo requirements, I had to delete my Yahoo Account from Thunderbird and re-create it. Before doing so, with Thunderbird closed, I copied all files and folders to a separate folder. Successfully recreated the account. Closed Thunderbird, and copied back all the files and folders to they're previous location. I have verified through Windows Explorer that they are all there. However, when I restart Thunderbird, none of the folders or files are listed. What do I need to do to fix this?

When i look into resource monitor, i get sick by seeing how much firefox is writing to my C: SSD. Some time ago i tried fixing it by doing folder linking and stuff i already forgot. It seems like everything got reverted after an update or something. (You can tell im not a Pro) But why is this such a hassle in the first place? Why cant we just get the option to completely deny the use of SSD? I dont care how slow it would be, i dont want to bu a new SSD every 2 years.

A few days ago when I opened Thunderbird, version 70 downloaded (it's not supposed to appear here in the UK yet), overriding the 68 that was installed and disappearing the files. I tried to re-install, downloaded 68, but could not make the installation work. The help line of Plusnet (my service provider) all gone. I tried to re-install was consulted on two days and told me the values I should put in for manual installation, but , although I tried all the variations, I still could not make it work. I'd be very grateful for advice.

hello ...

yesterday Firefox updated itself on my tablet ( hung on the charger while I was at work ). In the evening all my open tabs were closed, the bookmarks were gone and FF was set as default browser. Where did my tabs and bookmarks go ? Auto update is / was disabled - default browser is another browser for good reason. FF runs / ran there actually permanently and was only sent into the background. Because the tablet should not be synchronized because of special software, the bookmarks only exist there. Why were they removed during a normal update ?

I'm trying to move back to Firefox from Pale Moon. I've exported my logins/passwords file from Pale Moon, as an XML file. However, I cannot figure out how to import that data into Firefox - Import from another browser doesn't include Pale Moon, and I have no Import from a File option that I can find.

I also saved back the files key3.db and logins.json from Pale Moon, but I cannot find their locations in FFX, so I'm guessing it doesn't use those files any more?

Any help on how I can import my Pale Moon saved passwords to Firefox is appreciated!

I'm a long-time user of Thunderbird, and have a whole load of old emails stored in it. Which was fine, until my PC died last month taking my HD with it.

No problems, I have backups, but how to apply them to my new rig?

As I understand it, all my stuff is stored in these two folders (retrieved from my backup):

C:\Users\my-name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\yun4892o.default C:\Users\my-name\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles\yun4892o.default

When I install Thunderbird on the new PC, it puts two folders in each of the Profiles folders: km5c5jql.default-release and y3kx2mde.default (the second of which is empty apart from a single times.json file in the Roaming version).

I tried removing the profile folders created by the new install and copying the yun4892o ones in instead, but when I launch Thunderbird, it says "Your Thunderbird profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible."

So what do I do? Do I perhaps copy some of the contents of the yun4892o folder into one/both of the new folders? I really don't want to lose all my old email!

Hello, the latest (today) automatic update was to 68.12.1 (32). It has resulted in many persisting problems. I thought that I could solve these issues by downloading/installing 68.12.1 again but the version available for download is 78. something. Is that safe to install on top of 68.12.1 and keep my data?

My system is Windows 10 (64).

Many thanks for your help and stay safe, tiha
