The push for more AI is absolutely asinine. Mozilla has been my first and only choice for ages because I trust them to have the best interests of their consumers at heart. This push towards more AI is going to kill the fans of Mozilla. It’s insane that they would read the room with the failures of Copilot among other things and go “yea, sign us up for that.” I understand this is a company driven by profits, but dear god this is a terrible terrible move and I expect the fallout of this decision to be swift and severe.

As the title suggests, I find this forum incredibly bad. It's so difficult to even get to the point where I'm able to post a question, I assume that most who search for help give up and browse for a different forum to get help.

Speaking of other forums - I'm not sure if this is supposed to be the official place to get help if you have problems with your Thunderbird install. There is also this one, but that seems to be strictly a place for developers? Or is that for users reporting bugs too? If that other forum is for developers, then my next question would be if Thunderbird developers even read about posted bugs in this forum? If not, then what's the point of this anyways?

In short, I would like to know if this right here is indeed supposed to be the "official" place for Thunderbird users to report bugs and make suggestions or should this be done somewhere else. Just the fact that I as a user can't tell already says a lot.

Please Mozilla or Thunderbird - shut this down and create a better forum for your users! For example, other software that I use has discourse forums that work very well for connecting users and developers. If you can create a better place for your user base to come together, report bugs, make suggestions and give feedback, you make the whole experience around using Thunderbird more enjoyable and ultimately gain more users.

Thank you for your work on Thunderbird.

Is it just me or is Thunderbird not a particularly polished product? It's been around for years and by now one would think it would be so 5 star cutting edge that no other client could possibly touch it. In my experience, not so.

I had TBird many years ago and then became an early adopter of cloud based email. I used the provider's interface. I now use three email providers and thought that going back to TBird would help me concatonate all of my accounts in one easy interface. While it has done that, why has it taken so long to configure?

i'm an expert user. I always configure my accounts manually with non-default ports, etc,... I know what I'm doing. It took me a few hours to figure out how to configure them all in TBird AND make them work. I should have been able to have all accounts setup and operational in 15 minutes or less. What I'm finding is that TBird functionality is not very intuitive. I've even had to resort to doing online searches to find out how to do things. That does not speak well for what should be a very mature product. It's not as if Mozilla does not have resources to develop a professional product. It seems that they let the product be developed and then forget about quality control and gaining user feedback with focus groups. if they did this, TBird would be known as very mature AND POLISHED!

Another area I'm having nothing but issues is the calendar. Like email it should be an easy process to connect Tbird's (app) calendar with an external calendar and have it operate two way. I've been trying to connect my TBird calendar with Apple calendar so that I can have a reliable calendar on my iPhone. I wouldn't have to do this if there was a TBird iOS calendar app. The fact is that two weeks later and I'm still putzing around with it trying to make them talk to each other. The online help is virtually useless. There is a lot of old information. How do I know this? The instructions say to look for something and then that something is not in the current version of TBird. Then I have to go at it solo and try to figure it out.

Also, I find the TBird interface a little dated but more important not at all intuitive. Trying to do simple things like compose a new message takes time to figure out. Yes, I finally found the "Ctrl N" command, however, I am now so accustomed to graphics interfaces that I resist going back to Ctrl keyboard commands. I'm not new at this game, I've been around PC's since the original IBM PC that ran IBM-DOS so command lines and keyboard commands are nothing new to me. I simply don't want to use them any more. TBird forces me to do that. It's as if the developers are all stuck in the 80's-90's and don't really want to take this product into the 21st Century.

Don't get me wrong, it's a very good product from the back end, however, I have distaste for anything that forces me to change my workflow and that is what has happened. I don't mind making some changes, however, going back to TBird makes me feel as if I'm starting all over learning about email and calendars. I'm a professional. At one time I enjoyed hacking and making things work the way I wanted. Those days are gone and now I need tools that work out of the box as I value my time.

Tbird needs is a LOT OF SPIT AND POLISH for it to be regarded as a product that can be used easily by professionals, neopites and everyone in between. At this time, it doesn't hit that mark.

Let’s Retire the Word “Chatbot”—It’s Time for Firefox to Call LLMs What They Are!

Hi Firefox community,

I’m not your usual tech influencer or a corporate “enthusiast”—I’m just a longtime open source user who’s spent more than a few years behind the veiled curtain, watching how this world of software and possibility unfolds. I love what Mozilla does for users like me. That’s exactly why I want to raise something: I keep seeing the word “chatbot” show up for Firefox’s new AI-powered assistants (like the sidebar and what’s coming next). But let’s be honest—“chatbot” belongs to the days of robotic customer service and scripted dead-ends.

What we have now in Firefox—powered by real LLMs (Large Language Models)—is a whole different species. Calling these assistants “chatbots” just doesn’t fit. It sells short what LLM-based assistants can do: they’re powerful, context-aware, and, at times, strikingly human in their conversation. New users might miss the true magic if we stick to old language. So why not call them “AI assistants,” “LLM-powered assistants,” or just “AI” instead? It would help everyone see the progress, and show how Mozilla’s still leading, not just catching up.

I’ll leave it open for discussion, but I hope others feel this shift too. Language shapes how we see these things—and sometimes it takes a Singular Fella (or maybe two) to nudge the world past old memes. Thanks for hearing me out, and here’s to a future where our assistants, and our words, keep getting smarter.

Chase bank has recently put a front end check that blocks all users with Windows 7 ,8 ,8.1. They have a page that says the browsers need to be changed to ones supported, yet they ignore the version of the browser "Firefox Setup 115.31.0esr.exe" which Mozilla updates monthly for security fixes. Thus they are effectively forcing anyone that bought a computer from 10/22/2009 to 01/10/2023 14 years.

I would like to know the number of users that are using the Firefox Setup 115.31.0esr release so that I can make Chase aware of how many home users they are impacting with this front end block to logging into Chase for our checking, savings, credit cards and mortgages. With some actual numbers they may reverse this problem by simply removing the front end check of windows version before allowing user login.

Without some idea of the potential number of users being blocked from access, they may just continue to ignore us.

And now that Windows 10 is not longer a supported version of Windows, will that be next. Steven Hudson [edited email from community support forum]

The Firefox family clearly has great disdain for the average American who doesn't want to be forced to read DNC / Democrat talking points via the "curated thread". Just be honest: it's the DNC curating Firefox's news just as the FBI curated who was allowed to talk on X. Just be up front with everyone. Firefox is sort of like the Bluesky of internet browsers. Here is a crazy concept: Instead of shoving your views down the throats of average Americans. How about let us citizens choose are own news sources? Crazy concept. Or are you Big Brother? Seriously. Get a clue if you want the 60% of ordinary people to keep using your browser as I have done for 15 years give or take. I get that I can turn off the propaganda your are displaying but choice would be better. If you would like to discuss, I'm all ears.

Of course there is no category for general concerns, so category choice is wrong by default, sorry about that.

The recent "year in review" included this attached bit. Does that mean that the Mozilla foundation is deciding to not allocate any of their overall revenue to Thunderbird and rely solely on user donations for it? If so, why does it own/manage Thunderbird? To me the entire purpose of an entity like Mozilla managing a project like Thunderbird is like most companies, to be able to allocate extra revenue from more lucrative projects to ones that are less so. Seems that the userbase of a project you own doesn't matter, money^s somehow better allocated to stuff that nobody asked for?
