Thunderbird: 153.0.2esr (64-bit) Operating system: Windows Occurs with multiple email accounts Reproduced on two different computers running the same Thunderbird version

Description:

After updating Thunderbird to version 153.0.2esr, released on 4 August 2026, emails can no longer be dragged and dropped from Thunderbird to the Windows Desktop or any folder in Windows Explorer.

The problem occurs with all tested email accounts and folders. It has been reproduced independently on two different Windows computers using the same Thunderbird version.

Saving an email manually with Ctrl+S works correctly and creates the .eml file. Normal drag-and-drop between folders in Windows Explorer also works. Only dragging an email from Thunderbird to Windows Explorer fails.

The issue also appears to affect third-party applications that use Thunderbird to create or send emails automatically.

Steps to reproduce:

Open Thunderbird 153.0.2esr on Windows. Select an email in any account or folder. Drag the email to the Desktop or another folder in Windows Explorer. Release the mouse button.

Actual result:

The email is not copied or saved to the selected Windows folder.

Expected result:

Thunderbird should export the email as an .eml file in the selected folder.

Additional information:

Ctrl+S successfully saves the same email. The issue affects every tested email account. Thunderbird extensions were disabled, but the problem remained. Thunderbird Troubleshoot Mode did not resolve the issue. Restarting Thunderbird, Windows Explorer and Windows did not resolve it. Thunderbird and Windows Explorer are not running with different elevation levels. The problem was reproduced on a second computer after installing the same Thunderbird version. No relevant error is shown in Thunderbird’s Error Console when the drag-and-drop operation fails. The issue was not present before the recent Thunderbird update.

This appears to be a regression in Thunderbird 153.0.2esr affecting email export through drag-and-drop and possibly Thunderbird’s integration with external applications.

My folders are in disarray and it is cutting into my productivity to file emails. I have tried but it in settings but it doesn't work. Many are in alpha order but there are 2 different two different sections of the same name, and some odd files end up in an alphabetized section.

For instance there are 2 different ZBV sections with other stray folders in the same area that should be in there own alpha folder area. It's a mess to find the right folder. I have to scroll up and own and look for the folder I need to file in. I would be happy to donate, and i have in the past, but I really need this to get fixed. Please, please, please...

At one time, I was able to access my email with Thunderbird. Then Thunderbird stopped working, and I didn't have time to research why. Monday, I bought a new Macbook. After installation, Thunderbird says "account settings found." Then it asks for a password. My password no longer works. Instead, I get a message: "Authentication failed. Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password." What, if anything, can I do?

It's very odd. Normally moving an email, say from the Inbox to the relevant year's archive, takes "no time at all".

Which is true for all the mailboxes shown on the attached screenshot, EXCEPT for the four at the bottom. Moving even one message from Inbox to Yiddish can take ten seconds or longer (with the dreaded "Not Responding" occasionally). Moving something in the opposite direction is also screwy, only from those four.

I had thought that it was because they're rather large. This first started when there were just Yiddish and MSW, and I split off most of the earlier years into the archives shown. To no avail.

It's only an annoyance, but I'm puzzled about how such a thing could happen.

Also very slow tagging or untagging a message just in those mailboxes.

Every time I start Thunderbird it takes several minutes and sometimes doesn't start up. Once it does open up, emails do update new ones but if I go to account settings and select anything it hangs up. If I click on it, grays out and gets a message Thunderbird not responding. I have to open task manager to stop the program. Why aren't the emails on my email server get deleted/ moved updated when using Thunderbird? It seems like the only thing that happens only gets changed on the device I made changes to only. (computer, or phone or laptop)

Hi, I have two accounts in my Thunderbird. They are Gmail (regular gmail account) and CFCC (an institutional account). The CFCC shows up in my Unified Folder list but the Gmail does not. Is that normal? The main Inbox is showing all incoming emails from both accounts so no performance issues, just wondering how to get rid of the CFCC (if that's possible) to eliminate clutter. Grouping emails is awesome. Also have the preview show a bunch of compressed email info when a group is selected. However if the group contains only one email nothing is previewn. Is this a bug or a feature?

How can one setup a sending email server with same address and username but different passwords?

When trying to setup 2 different accounts i find a thunderbird limitation using API email password which have same smtp server address and username and only differs in password.

Is there a workaround?

Somehow I got 2 emails: gregory@gregorysantana.com and Gregory@GregorySantana.com The lower case shows a lock blue envelope and the upper case shows a lock red envelope. I don't understand the icon meaning of the lock icon and the color coding.

Further: I use command File, sub menu Get New Messages for All Accounts.

In the lower part of the overall panel, I see new messages downloading, but the new messages don't show up in either account.

How to correct, it is important.

This is a follow-on to a question I asked yesterday. I appear to have accidentally deleted the main Profile I use for email. However - thinking back - I'm 99% sure I clicked the 'Don't Delete Folders' command. This supposedly deleted the Profile name BUT retained all the information in 'storage' - but where is that located?

In the process of changing from Windows to Linux, I have entered the details of my email account and it is fine when I press re-test, but when I press done it is not fine anymore. The email is “freeuk.com” which is still active but Freeuk itself isn’t, but the service was taken over by Claranet with a “clara.net” setting, so I imagine that may be relevant. Any help (not too technical please) would be appreciated. Thanks.

As in the subject, my computer has sound everywhere else but, despite 'play a sound' still showing as ticked in general settings, no sound happens when an e-mail arrives. And, in general settings for 'when a new message' arrives, I can hit the Play Button there and the sound happens. How do I fix this?

I have thunderbird installed on my PC, and my main email account is a gmail account. I download from gmail using POP protocol (SSL/TLS connection security, OAuth2 authentication). I have been using these settings for a long time (15 years?).

This afternoon, thunderbird stopped downloading my messages. No error messages : just "no new messages to download".

I can see (by logging directly into my gmail account using my browser) that there are new messages on the server. They're not spam or junk, and they're not getting downloaded into my (local) spam folder. They're not getting downloaded at all.

I still have room on the google server (it's about 87% full), and room on the hard drive on my computer (about 3 GB).

I want to get all my emails down and saved before Yahoo starts deleting them. I asked already and got directed to the tool Importexporttool.NG which I got. Installed. Tried it. It didn't work. Something wrong on that machine. Big mess. Now I am here on a new machine: linux mint, new Thunderbird. complete with the tool. I have got two accounts with yahoo. I have one set up via IMAP and it has downloaded everything. Inbox and nearly 100 custom folders. The second one is not set up yet. Next step I think is to get all these emails, custom folders and all, into 'local folders'. Then set up the other account and do the same Then I'm done. Right now I have a hitch: can't clearly see how to do this with Importexporttoolng and certainly don't see any other way. You will appreciate that with 100 folders manual on each folder is something i want to avoid if i possibly can. We only have about three days left I think. Anyone can steer me through this?

Seems like soon as a batch of emails download they all open up immediately or at least as soon as I open or delete one they all open. Never had this happening until just late this week.

thunderbird is not able to access mail.twc.com for 2 days now. Spectrum webmail didn't work yesterday, but is now functional. Thunderbird may need a fix to deal with whatever changes Spectrum made to its mail server,

I just downloaded Thunderbird onto my new laptop. I use AOL as my mail server (not voluntarily; they own the verizon.net email domain). This is also my 1st foray into IMAP.

On Thunderbird, there are two "Drafts" folders (identical spelling). My draft emails go to one of the two. I cannot unsubscribe from either by using the any of the methods I found on here (including: uncheck, close Subsribe, close the program, wait a few mins, then open the program). The result is that both "Drafts" folder remain on the LH panel and both remain checked in the Subscribe window.

An interesting note is that the properties of the "Drafts" folder that does not receive draft emails is: "imap://w5mt%40verizon.net@imap.aol.com/Draft" with the Name in the Folder Properties window as "Drafts" (this cannot be changed in the Folder Properties window). The properties of the "Drafts" folder that does receive draft emails is: "imap://w5mt%40verizon.net@imap.aol.com/Drafts" with the same Name, "Drafts".

Just to make things more entertaining, AOL Mail also has two "Drafts" folders; one is in the list of folders below Inbox and does not receive draft emails, the other is in the Hidden Folder List and that is where draft emails go. The "Draft" in the main folder list can't be manipulated (e.g. moved). The one in the Hidden Folder List can't be moved to anywhere outside the Hiden Folder List.

In Thunderbird, I would just like the "unused, undesired" "Drafts" folder to either be deleted or hidden. At present, neither option seems possible.
