I have a bunch of IMAP accounts, most gmail, but one at alumni.caltech.edu. At the end I copy-pasted the start of Troubleshooting Information. All have been working fine with Thunderbird for years.

Today, for every account, if I click "Get Messages" I see "<account-name>: Connected to <hostname>..." at the lower-left in the status line, but it never completes or times out, and I don't get any new messages, even though I can login to webmail and see that there are new messages.

I've quit and restarted Thundbird, I've paused my Eset Smart Security firewall, and I've rebooted.

I tried turning on Thunderbird logging in an elevated cmd window with: C:\WINDOWS\system32>set NSPR_LOG_FILE=%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%\Desktop\tbird_log.txt C:\WINDOWS\system32>set NSPR_LOG_MODULES=POP3:5,IMAP:5,SMTP:5 C:\WINDOWS\system32>start thunderbird

Thunderbird eventually went into offline mode and I exited, but I don't know how to read the log file properly.

This is on Windows 10 Home. I did get a significant Windows Update overnight: Version 1709 and an update to it, KB40058043. I noticed this morning that I had a Windows Mail app in my taskbar (which I removed). I'll also say that my wife's PC got the same Windows update, and her Thunderbird client is working fine.

I'm out of ideas how to fix or further analyze this - can someone look at the log file? Since it contains email addresses I don't want to try posting it.

My ISP, Cox, sent me a message that I have to change my POP server settings from:

port 110, Connection security: None, and Authentication method: Password, transmitted insecurely

to:

port 995, Connection security: SSL/TLS, and Authentication method: normal password

When I do this Thunderbird will not retrieve any new messages. The same changes work ok on two android devices, so I can see from them that there are new emails for Thunderbird to get, it's just not getting them. I tried changing one of my accounts back to the port 110 settings and that account now works again.

I tried contacting Cox about it but they stated that they don't support Thunderbird and referred me here.

I'm on Thunderbird 52.5.2 32 bit.

Having trouble with my Charter Spectrum mail account. I am able to receive e-mails, but cannot send them. When I send a mail, I get the "Login to server mobile.charter.net failed" message. However, I believe I have the correct setting for SMTP server. Charter Spectrum says I should have mobile.charter.net set as the SMTP server, port 587 selected, SSL enabled, and the authentication password should be the same as my IMAP incoming for the account.

So when I get this message about login to server failed - I re-enter the same account password, and get the same message result. Why would I be able to receive e-mails, but not send using the same server and password?

I was able to go onto Charter Spectrum website and login and send and receive e-mails from their web mail app. Although, I hate using it, and would much rather use TBird.

Thanks in advance. C.Bariou

When sending emails - I receive the message box: Log-in failed (In Danish Log-in mislykkedes). See first image file. Further, Log-in to the server asmtp.telia.dk failed (but written in Danish). I am a Telia customer, and the outgoing server name is correct. I click the button in the middle; "Type in new password" - next file picture comes up, named "SMTP-server password is required". I type in the, correct, password for my e-mail account at Telia. - Tried both variations of clicking the box to ask the password manager to keep the password - and not clicking it. - And click OK. No difference. Then it returns back to the first image file again - and so it goes into circles again, again and again! In Settings, Security, saved password menu - both the in-going and the outgoing servers are correct - see third picture, and when I want to see the passwords they are equal and correct. I also attach a screen shot of my SMTP settings. I have tried to disable and enable the firewall and my antivirus program, but no difference. I use Bullguard 18.0.346.2 version. I can send e-mails from other devices from the same e-mail account and server, but not from Thunderbird, so it must be a local problem here. I use Windows 10 home, version 1709. My Thunderbird is 52.6.0 (32-bit). I had the same issue for a few days ago, but only once, first time for about 2 years usage of Thunderbird, but typing in the password in the second image, solved the problem and it has been running for a couple of days until now when in runs in circles. So, what is wrong - and what to do? Thanks in advance.

Sending emails from one of my accounts fails intermittently.

All my other accounts on the same version of TB are OK.

Receiving on all accounts is always OK, even when the intermittent send error is in play.

Typically the account will send OK upon startup and for about 30 minutes afterwards. Then it begins to fail with dialog "Login to SMTP failed - enter password and retry". Entering password does not resolve.

Usually it will just begin sending again OK after about 2-3 hours, then fail again 30 minutes later.

Any ideas? I'd be most grateful!

Hello. I'm getting constant crashes on a new installation of Thunderbird on a new PC. It seems to happen when downloading emails, of which we have tens of thousands, and it seems to crash every few seconds or minutes. I tried reinstalling, and running in safe mode and disabling addons. I tried deleting the account and recreating it. I tried deleting the profile folder and recreating it. We have 4 email accounts on that machine (we have a dozen in total) but as TB seemed to be struggling I deleted all of them and recreated only 1, which made no difference. Apart from that the PC seems to be normal and does not report any errors. We have a dozen other PCs all running Thunderbird with the same accounts and with the same settings, none of which show any problems. The crash reports (I have loads of them) all seem to show EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION_READ This is the ID of the most recent one: 4e9ad970-189e-41e9-9399-8db820180222

Thanks in advance for any help.

I primarily use Thunderbird as a RSS reader. I prefer to have it open pages in my default browser, though, so I have "rss.show.content-base" set to 3 and that part works fine. The problem is, whenever I open a link, it will open it in my browser but then change my default browser to Thunderbird.

So the next time I open a link, Waterfox will ask if I want to make it the default browser.

I've tried making a fresh Thunderbird profile, disabling "Always check to see if Thunderbird is the default mail client on startup", and have tried just point it at Waterfox in the Config Editor. I searched around but I couldn't find similar issues. I didn't see anything that helpful in the log, though I'm not all that familiar with work with Gecko like this.

1. For years, I would email stories from the NYTimes to my Google mailbox. Each email contains a link to the online story. 2. Next, I would download the emails via Thunderbird to my desktop. I would open the emails and click on the link when ready to read the story on line and I would be taken to the correct page on nytimes.com 3. Beginning about a month ago, while the links are "live" (blue) and work as intended when I view them on Gmail, they are no longer any good (not live, not blue) after downloading and opening the messages on Thunderbird.

Q. Does anyone know for sure what happened with Thunderbird that would cause this to happen?

Please DO NOT GUESS and please do not reply if you do not know the answer.

Using 52.8 in WIN 7 Pro workstations. For certain emails Thunderbird displays a received time (in the folder item listing) that is exactly 1 hour later than actual time. Checking headers reveals accurate time stamps from all server steps. LAN router and local workstations have correct time. This is consistent for email from a given sender (sending device time is correctly set) and the displayed time is identically incorrect for multiple recipients. Where does Thunderbird get the displayed "received" time?

Suddenly, I could not send emails. This has happened before, but quite some time ago, so I can't recall how I solved it back then. I went through the “Cannot Send Messages” https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cannot-send-messages steps and discovered that there was no entry line at all for smtp outbound when I checked "Saved Logins" to see the passwords. Mailbox inbound was there, but not smtp outbound. It had been there before without doubt.

The original error message said that I needed to enter a password, which, when I checked as I described, was missing. So trying again, I entered the password and checked the box that lets the system manager remember it. Now an smtp outbound line appeared in "Saved Logins," but I still could not attempt to send a message without an error notice that declared failure

This error message I kept getting was this one:

  Login Failed
? Login to server outbound.att.net failed
  [Retry] [Enter New Password] [Cancel]

(As you can see, the underlying email service is from the unfortunate ATT/Yahoo, the second half of which is known by the lovely name "Oath" (visions of writhing fanatics swearing allegiance at a blazing altar), which I am seeking to replace. Meanwhile, I must have working email service from it through the heretofore wonderful client Thunderbird.)

Imagine my surprise when I happened to check the "Sent" box and discovered that these messages all were listed as having gone out despite the failure message I was receiving, but given that tests I sent to myself were not received, these must have been on the order of "false positives." I tried the steps in that "Cannot Send Messages" article and cannot imagine what is wrong.

What am I missing?

Thank you.
