I have had Thunderbird for decades and have donated a small amount twice to its maintenance. Now as a result of a password change and perhaps some setting change I was not aware of and then a uninstall and reinstall of Thunderbird 4 times, I have lost my archived e-mails (did not realize a profile had to separately be set up for archived folders) and lost about 1/2 of my old e-mails as well as all my sent e-mails. Now I CANNOT SEND OUT EMAILS through my desktop but can do so through my phone - thus nothing wrong with the provider Spectrum. So something has happened on my desktop to prevent sending out e-mails even though I can receive incoming e-mails. Thus nothing wrong with the password. Also, I temporarly shut down anitvirus and firewall but that did not remedy the situation. I spoke to spectrum technical support and nothing from their end. Also, I have the current ports and settings. I love the way Thunderbird looks and its utilities compared to Gmail and Outlook so hate to walk away from it at this point. I posted before and want to see if anyone else has a simple solution. Would appreciate any considered help. please.

I have just upgraded my computer from Windows 10 to Windows 11. Due to hardware complications (e.g., new motherboard) I had this done at a shop. I took the computer in about noon on Wednesday, July 30. The upgrade to W-11 finally happened on Monday afternoon, August 11. During that period I received 83 emails to my Gmail account, which of course were not downloaded to Thunderbird, and also sent 13 -- all directly to/from the web Gmail site. Since the activation of W-11 I have received 19 emails and sent 6 -- still all directly from the web Gmail site. Due to additional hardware issues, my computer did not come home until this (Thursday, August 14) afternoon. After I got it hooked up, and running, I brought up Thunderbird. It has downloaded the 83 received + 13 sent, from 7/30 through 8/11, but not done anything with the 19 received + 6 sent emails since then. When I turned Thunderbird off and back on -- or the entire computer off and back on, it has repeated this behavior. Currently I have 332 (83*4) received messages sitting in my inbox, and 52 (13*4) sent messages sitting in my sent box.

What do I need to do, to stop it from repeating this 7/30-8/11 download; and more importantly /start/ downloading messages since then? I feel fairly confident that the timing of the switchover from W-10 to W-11 is not coincidental; and that there is something I need to do in Thunderbird under W-11, to correct this behavior.

All advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Franklin Coleman

How can I tell when the Offline message download complete?

I am running Thunderbird 115.18.0 (64-bit) on Linux Mint 21.3 Virginia (base: Ubuntu 22.04 jammy). My goal is to create an offline copy of a 13 GB gmail account in local folders and then delete all the custom IMAP folders to regain some free space in gmail storage.

I am achieving this by: 1) Setting up an IMAP account in Thunderbird for the gmail account. 2) Enabling local storage of all folders (in Settings and set config flag, etc). Changed gmail settings to unlimit the number of IMAP downloads. Set Thunderbird account concurrent connections to 15 (gmail max). a) Edit/Preferences/Advanced/General/Config Editor: mail.server.default.check_all_folders_for_new = true 3) Click on each IMAP folder in Thunderbird to initiate download of that folder. I don't see this documented anywhere but it doesn't seem to download the messages in each folder until I do this. 4) Turn Thunderbird offline and ask it to download all emails before going offline. 5) Copy all folders from the gmail account in thunderbird to local storage. 6) Turn Thunderbird back online. 6) Delete custom IMAP folders in Thunderbird gmail account to clean up gmail online storage.

In my mind, step 2 should be enough to force a download of all emails in all IMAP folders. I added steps 3 and 4 because it's unclear when this process is complete. Especially given gmail IMAP bandwidth limits: https://support.google.com/a/answer/1071518?hl=en

My questions relates to step 3 and 4. In step 3, I don't really have any way to know when Thunderbird has finished downloading all emails from all the gmail IMAP folders. I'm experiencing the typical gmail login issues and throttling due to too many concurrent connections and given this it could take days if Thunderbird can even keep track of which messages downloaded and which got errors back from gmail.

How do I know when Thunderbird has finished downloading messages prior to going offline? Does it notify me with a dialog or do I just have to keep hovering over the Offline toggle periodically until it actually says offline?

Any constructive tips on how to confirm everything is downloaded or process improvements, etc.

Thanks, pi

I have Thunderbird 140.1.1esr (64-bit).

See the attached image. Just today emails started to show up oddly: 1) in the list view there is no subject or correspondent and 2) the message body begins with some message headers in text format and is followed by the HTML message source in text format (i.e. the message's HTML code).

I use an Earthlink POP3 server. These odd messages look fine when I access them via Earthlink's webmail interface. Even so, I suspect this is an Earthlink server issue, but maybe someone using a different email server has seen the same odd behavior?

Guys, I am on TB 128.6.0esr (64-bit) and I am using TB since Netscape era (25 years now).

Since last update, when I try to forward an email in my Sent box, it produces a blank window with only the subject filled-in. No content, no attachments.

I tried Repair to the box but it's still the same.

The problem happens with all recent mails but not with all older mails. For example, some older mails, sent e.g. one year ago, or more, when clicking forward, behave as expected, with content and attachments. Other ones, however, do not work and open as blank windows, as I explained.

It works always with "Forward as Attachment", but this is NOT what I want.

Has anyone faced this problem? Do you have any suggestions? Should I file a bug?

Please advise.

Thanks, Nick

Recently (last 5 days) Thunderbird 115.18.0 (64-bit) on Windows 7 Pro has started corrupting incoming email that is from commercial web sites containing rich content. The message comes in as a text representation instead of displaying HTML correctly. It also doesn't display the sender or the subject (empty boxes). Simple HTML and text based email comes in ok but the more elaborate email doesn't. I have checked these messages on my email service's web page and they display correctly there, but for some reason Thunderbird is unable to display the message correctly. I don't know if this version of TB is missing a codec for newer content but I would appreciate any help I can get to fix the problem. I did check receiving these same email messages using a different computer with Windows 10 and Thunderbird 140.1.x and it handles the incoming email correctly. Again Thunderbird on my Win 7 PC was handling everything correctly until about 4 or 5 days ago. I haven't made any changes to the profile to cause a difference.

In previous versions, there was a setting to download messages from the domain email server when you checked for email. This meant that it would reside on my HD, where I would retain a copy no matter what the email server did. When I replaced my PC, I moved to a newer version, but I cannot find a setting to do this, and my emails are being deleted by the server at some point (I wish to retain these.) How do I make this happen? I wouldn't think that this would be a big ask, which is why I don't understand why I no longer am seeing this setting.

I'm using Thunderbird 140.6.0esr under 64-bit LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) v6.0, fully up to date with patches.

Last night, Thunderbird was working justfine when I switched the PC off. This morning, when I try to collect mail, I get a dialog box with the message

Unable to write the e-mail to the mailbox. Make sure the file system allows you write privileges and you have enough disk space to copy the mailbox.

I have multiple Terabytes free on the drive, and I have gone through a full file listing and checked all the file attributes. Yes, I have write access.

Just to be sure, I ran a chown against the entire ~/thunderbird directory (~/.thunderbird is a logical link) so I own ~/thunderbird and everything beneath.

I also ran a fsck on the drive, and fsck gave it a clean bill of health - no errors reported. This was just a normal fsck, not including a badblocks check, although I did run badblocks against the drive when I got it new, about two months ago.

I am out of ideas. I suppose I could try running TB with a sudo, but I'm not really happy with doing that routinely.

Does anybody have any ideas? . Thanks,

Brian.

Witam serdecznie,

Hello and welcome,

I've had this problem for a very long time.

Every time you send an email I get feedback in a box:

The message was sent but was not copied to the Sent folder due to network or file access errors. You can try again or save the message locally in "Local folders/Sent-l.wisniewski@oczyszczalnia.net".

what is also available is that in the case of my messages they did not reach the recipient and I have to re-send....

Please help me!!!!

Running Thunderbird 115.10.x on Windows 10 Pro 22H2 on an older Samsung Note 9 Pro 15 w/ an 8th gen Intel i7, 16GB RAM and an aftermarket 1TB SSD w/ over 660GB of free space. I have emails going back to 1997 in the Sent folder (16K sent emails). While running Thunderbird 115.9.x earlier today, I noticed I suddenly could not delete emails out of my Inbox. The following error message was displayed:

The messages could not be moved or copied to folder 'Trash on [username@domain.com]' because writing to folder failed. To gain disk space, from the File menu, first choose Empty Trash, and then choose Compact Folders, and then try again.

So I did that to no avail. I then tried to delete messages out of other folders as a test (Sent, Drafts, etc.) figuring I could simply move them back if successful. Received the same error message. Closed all applications and rebooted the laptop as it had been running for several days. Same error message.

Did some research which all told me to delete the Trash MBOX files (including the .msf file). Did that, same result. Launched in Safe Mode, same result. Created a Trash.txt file, removed the .txt file extension and relaunched Thunderbird. Same result. Compacted all folders and relaunched. Same result.

If I backup the current folders and restore from them, I'll get the same result. Anyone have a new idea or set of instructions I can follow?

Thanks!
