For some reason, whenever I have multiple tabs open in Thunderbird, it will seemingly randomly open a new window, interrupting whatever I'm doing. What seems to happen is that the new window will contain the tab I was working with (address book, settings, etc.) and a tab for my mail, but that mail tab will have switched to a different mailbox. And then the new window that opened behind the other one will have a tab for my mail focusing on whichever mailbox was selected before.

This is driving me absolutely crazy! It keeps interrupting what I'm doing and makes me anxious to do anything in any tabs in Thunderbird. I need to fix it!

Any idea why this is happening and what I can do to stop it?

Hello all. Sorry for this long posting. Sometime last winter, Comcast had a system security issue, forcing all users to change their passwords. As it turns out, they apparently changed their method of authentication, but didn't inform users of settings changes. Basically, their system requires a "Primary" email account for account maintenance, then secondary users can be added and maintained. Some background details that probably don't apply to this issue, but I moved out of the Comcast service area 6 years ago, but was able to maintain my email account(s) as long as they're in use. I was able to change my Primary password, but was locked out of making changes to the secondary accounts. I also get the message, "This account is no longer active.", but it still is. At that time, all my accounts continued to work.

In any case, TB has worked without issues for years on both my Comcast and Gmail accounts (Gmail still works fine) up until the Comcast security issue. A few weeks ago, Comcast stopped working, asking to reenter my password, but re-entering it did not work. I eventually talked to Comcast email tech support (lol, after about 20 minutes of navigating their phone system). I was told that I should DELETE my (primary) email account and then recreate it. I did that, but in that process, I lost all my message rules (but I eventually retrieved a backup version of "msgFilterRules.dat".

In that process of re-creating my account, the Authentication method was changed from "Normal Password" to "OAuth2" (same used with Gmail). With that change, I no longer get an "Enter a new password" message, to "Unable to connect" (see attached image). I also get an "Authentication failure" message, and an occasional "My IP address has been temporary blacklisted", probably of my multiple attempts to re-connect. I should note that Comcast email still works from my Android Samsung S22 email app. See my current TB Server Settings in the attached image.

Well after many fruitless hours, on a whim, I opened my old and trusty Outlook (Office) 2007 (that I've never used for email), and with their settings with the same ''Port numbers, but slightly different "Encryption" (Connection security) settings, Outlook works! The difference between Outlook is that Outlook only uses SSL, whereas TB uses SSL/TLS (no option for SSL alone).

So, herein lies the problem. I WANT to keep using TB for my Comcast accounts, but I'm locked out (NO sending or receiving). I could just use Outlook, BUT I loose all my rules (moving incoming emails to their respective folders. As expected, Outlook uses a proprietary binary rules file format (rwz) which is unreadable and uneditable. From my research, their are no filter programs or file structure descriptions for the Outlook rules file.

I can use Xfinity's (Comcast) web based email client, but again, NO RULES possible (after 20+ years of use, I have almost 200 email sources that use my primary Comcast email address). I tried over time to migrate new sources to my Gmail accounts, but not my existing ones. I fear however that this is an internal TB issue, that has no easy solution, if at all.

So, I asking you to please help me resolve this issue. It would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks, Bill

P.S. After talking to Comcast the last time, they essentially said that they won't support TB, and it's not their problem to fix.

I have an iMac (Core 2 Duo) running Thunderbird 115.8.1 on Mac OS X 10.13 High Sierra. Thunderbird works fine when I'm actively using it. The problem arises when I close the window and switch to a different app. If I let Thunderbird run in the background for a while, the processor gauge (iStat Menus) will indicate that Thunderbird is using more than 100%, typically about 120-130% cpu usage. As soon as I switch back to Thunderbird (click on it in the Dock), the processor usage drops way down to normal (about 2%) and will stay that way as long as Thunderbird stays in the foreground as the active app. If I close the window and switch to the Finder or Firefox, Thunderbird will eventually start overusing the CPU again. It doesn't happen immediately... probably about 20-30 minutes of being idle in the background.

I've got Thunderbird set up to check one Gmail account. Nothing else. I used to have a different email account, but removed it.

Checking the logs in Console hasn't been helpful thus far. High Sierra seems to flood the logs with unrelated information.

I've noticed this issue for several revisions. I kept hoping that the next update would fix things. No such luck as of 115.8.1. Anyone have ideas how to fix this?

Edit 2024-03-14: I changed the subject to indicate that the problem occurs when the window is closed. It has nothing to do with being in the background vs. foreground.

Since upgrading to version 115.8.1 I get unable to write email to mailbox . I have three email addresses in my profile. All are POP. I am having a problem with Thunderbird version 115.8.1 (64-bit). I use a message filter to sort messages into specific folders. When I receive messages, I do not see a notification near the clock in Windows. The corresponding menu item in Thunderbird settings is enabled. However, a new message mark appears and disappears on the Thunderbird icon, and the notification sound plays.

Here are some additional details:

I am not sure what else to try. Can you please help me?

Please fix it so that we can either shut off or resize favicons in Google search results. This is with Firefox 123.0 using the default settings for fonts. It used to be that filters for Ublock and ABP would eliminate favicons totally. I'd prefer that solution since to me they serve no purpose. But at least make them reasonable sized.

See screenshot of Chrome vs Firefox.

Just migrating my .mozilla directory to a new OS ... works perfectly, everything exactly as it was in the old OS, so no complaints, however I noticed the size of the directory is 491Mb! It seems a bit fat for my bookmarks and preferences and such. Should it be that bloated? Can I trim it down? Did I perhaps copy some stuff into there that doesn't belong?

My google calendar, gmail, and G docs either will not load or only load after several attempts, or are very slow. They work fine in Chrome. This morning I couldn't open a G doc at all in FF, but it opened in Chrome.

My FF is up to date. I recently installed security software from AVG that is more full featured than the version I've been using for years with no problem. Could there be some known incompatibility between AVG and FF?

I'd much appreciate any suggestions!

I had a Search Folder as a filter for a mailbox inbox. I had about 20 unread messages in my inbox and about 5 unread messages in the search folder. When right-clicking the search folder and then Selecting "Mark Folder Read", it not only marked the emails in the search folder as read but also all the unread email files in the inbox it was filtering to.

This is not the behaviour I was expecting.

When doing somethings in Thunderbird, like setting up or changing message filters, a new window appears on the screen with the options. However this window (and others like it) are often bigger than the screen size. (I use an old 1280x1024 screen as I am sight impaired, but even ona full size screen this can happen.)

The problem is that these windows are not adjustable in size. If the button you require is off thee screen. it is not possible to click on it. This makes configuration very hard, especially if it is the Submit button.

Is there any easy solution? There are many times when this can happen and adjusting the default text size at the system level does not help. When the window displayed is too large and you cannot shrink it or move it enough to display the buttons you want.

Thanks for any help.

I am encountering a problem when using quick filter on my inbox in Thunderbird (115.8.1 (64-bit) Mac). Here is what happens:

  1. I have my messages sorted by date (the little carat appears next to the "Date" column header).
  2. I activate quick filter and input something.
  3. The filtered results appear, the "Date" column header still has a carat next to it, but the items are not sorted by date.
  4. If I click the "Date" column header twice to toggle the sorting, then the items appear sorted as expected.

The same thing occurs when I turn off the quick filter. The contents of the mailbox are restored, but they are not sorted by date even though the "Date" column header indicates that it is the active sort. Toggling it restores the correct order.

The messages appear to be defaulting to a sort by Subject (which is the first column as I have the layout organized), but the column headers do not update to reflect that. Neither does the drop-down to the right of the quick filter button which continues to show that the sort order is "date".

Hi everyone, I think this is my first post after using Thunderbird since it was born! (I'm 54). I have one company that sends out a few emails, but lately they are very difficult to read after I "Allow Remote Content". My Sister has the same problem. I've asked the company if they they've changed anything, but they say it's more likely the Thunderbird Client.

When the email comes in, it has normal readable black text. But as soon as I "Allow Remote Content" to see pictures etc, the text goes to a very light grey thin font. Almost unreadable. See the attachment.
