Ever since installing Firefox 29, the browser keeps crashing. How do I fix this?

About a week ago, my browser shifted to the new version of Firefox, version 29. Ever since then, I have had repeated random crashes multiple times a day and even an occasional blue screen incident. The browser has become so unstable as to be useless. If I'm counting right, this has generated over 50 crash reports since the upgrade; here's the tags for the last five:

I've shifted over to Chrome until this can be resolved, but I don't want to stay there because of the privacy issues.

There doesn't seem to be bugs on file in regards to the crash reports. However, let's do some troubleshooting!

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
  • In previous Firefox versions, click on the Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window and click on Help (or click on Help in the Menu bar, if you don't have a Firefox button) then click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Hmmmm ... right now, the answer seems to be inconclusive.

There are only three extensions on my current version of Firefox, one of which is locked at "disabled" because it's incompatible with FF 29. So, I went into safe mode and knocked out the other two.

It seemed to work OK.

Then I started the first extension.

It still seemed to work OK.

Then I shut it down and started the second extension instead.

It still seemed to work OK.

I went "huh" and re-enabled both. It worked great for a while -- and then started crashing again. What's more, when I went back to just one extension open, it crashed with either one.

I'm back in "safe" mode now, and kind of confused.

The extensions involved are FB Purity (a Facebook cleanup app) and the McAfee Site Advisor. Both had been a part of my setup before v. 29 without issues.

Update: I've now had a crash with all extensions disabled, though it took a while.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

I have the paid versions of both McAfee and Malwarebytes; both scans come up clean. I am hesitant to pile too many anti-virals onto the computer for a couple of reasons:

1) They start to get in each other's way. My last computer died because an abundance of anti-viral programs began going after each other and accidentally deleted a critical OS file in the process.

2) The Chrome browser is running without any difficulties at all. That suggests that whatever is causing this problem is unique to Firefox.

more options

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

I uninstalled Firefox. On the reinstall, the .exe interrupted and crashed due to a corrupt file. At this point, it's more headache than I want to deal with. I'm leaving it uninstalled and going with Chrome (now that I've found some suitable means of dealing with the privacy issue) until Firefox comes out with Version 30.

Sorry, guys, but v. 29 was just too horribly buggy an experience for me to want to repeat.

Success! Last night, MBAM and Kaspersky caught the bad file and isolated it; I re-downloaded FF 29 (now in a slightly updated .1 version, it looks like) and it has worked fine ever since. Whether it was the update, the file zap, or both, it's good to be able to go back to a working Firefox again.

Thanks for your help and patience.

I may have spoken too soon. Tonight, more crash moments (though not as frequent as they once were). Here's all of the crash reports from today and yesterday:

Since there's been mention of a new version in June, I may tough it out to then.

I have this problem also. 28 was fine and very stable. 29 is a disaster, not to mention the unfriendly changes in the interface. I was reluctant to come here again because the last time I tried to report a problem, I was told my anti-virus was at fault. It's never a Firefox problem, apparently.

Most of these crashes don't get automatically reported because the error message is generated by Windows (to check on line for a solution or close the program).

I've gone back to 28 so I have a reliable browser, and I've turned off updates.

Andrew's "Try Firefox Safe Mode" recommendation may possibly be helpful for some people having these crashes with Ffx 29 and 29.0.1 but wouldn't be for me, for the browser isn't crashing with or at any consistent interval of time of use.

Crashes have been occuring with Ffx 29 and now 29.0.1, and I possibly had some with Ffx 28 but don't recall. But the crashes don't occur on a regular interval.

It can be 3 or 4 times one week, occasionally 2 times in a single day, once a week, .... There's no regularity.

So, using Safe Mode isn't a troubleshooting solution for me, for I'm not going to surf the Web without the security extensions installed. Those include NoScript, Request Policy, HTTPS Everywhere from the EFF, Redirect Cleaner, Dr.Web Link Checker, BitDefender Quickscan, BrowserProtect, BetterPrivacy, and VTzilla. There's also AdBlock Plus and Element Hiding Helper for Adblock Plus, which I don't really consider as security extensions.

The most essential of those security extensions, for me, are NoScript, Request Policy and HTTPS Everywhere, but the others are also appreciated.

These were used with Ffx 28, 27 and 26, and some have been used for many years without Ffx ever crashing, not even once.

I haven't downloaded and installed any software for quite a while and never download from websites that aren't safe. If the downloads aren't too large to upload to VirusTotal.com, then this is always done. Then I make sure Avira Antivir has all available updates, do the same thing with Malwarebytes Antimalware, and run these scanners on the downloaded software installers. Results are always, "clean as a (clean) whistle". (Whistles should be cleaned now and then. :) )

When installing software, I always use custom, or just make sure that adware is unselected so that it's not installed.

I use Avira Antivir (without WebGuard, for I don't want the adware toolbar) and also make use of Malware Defender, so nothing is going to make changes to this XP system without me being informed about it and required to approve or block/deny the changes. EMET from Microsoft and Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit are also used. These security softwares are all used real-time. Malwarebytes Antimalware is used only on demand.

This XP system should be very clean. There sometimes are some malware in the Inbox and Junk files for Thunderbird when an on-demand scan is run with Avira Antivir, but these can't do any harm if these e-mails aren't opened, or they're opened, but the user doesn't click on any links in the e-mail. Whenever getting e-mail from unapproved sources, then they're automatically deleted when I see them. They'll be flagged as Junk, the Junk folder will be emptied, and then the Deleted folder (all in Thunderbird) will be emptied. There's then no way to get to these emails in Thunderbird, but the Inbox and Junk files on the hard disk drive don't always have this cleanup done. I just edit them manually to remove these emails, when Avira Antivir reports finding potential malware emails in these files.

And I don't use uncommon websites, don't use online game websites, etc.

Also, when Firefox crashes, it normally is when loading pages of websites that're trustworthy and that I've used for many years without ever having had any problems. I occasionally had crashes with Firefox 2, but this normally happened when loading Web pages that were awfully long, so long that I wouldn't want to bother using them anyway.

Before this current series of Firefox crashes I hadn't any, not once, for several years or more; I think since having upgraded from the most recent release of version 2 to I think 3.3.

So I've gone through 24 or 25 versions of Ffx before crashes began happening again with v28 or v29, and crashes are continuing with 29.0.1, though perhaps a little less often.

My extensions haven't changed with either Ffx 28 or 29. No new extensions have been added during use of over 3 versions of Firefox, now, and I always keep it up to date.

Testing using Safe Mode with Ffx definitely doesn't seem like a way to troubleshoot these crashes for me. If they happened every day and multiple times a day, then Safe Mode troubleshooting would be worth trying, but the crashes I've been having are irregularly happening in terms of time interval(s). And it happens when loading pages that normally work at websites I regularly used and have been using for years.

Anyway, when Firefox crashes, it prepares a crash report and I always have these sent to Mozilla. So, I'll continue using 29.0.1 until the next release is available and will try to remember how often this, 29.0.1., release crashes. If not mistaken, then I think it's occuring a little less often than happened with 29.0.

If you have crashes of your own start your own question and provide Crash IDs please.

Please do not post in questions asked by others unless you can provide a solution.

If you think you have a very similar question it would be ok to post to say you have asked a question of your own, because a solution in your own question thread may help others.

If you do not wish to try trouble shooting suggestions it may be rather difficult to identify problems.

Feel free to use whatever software you wish on your own computer but please note Firefox 28 is no longer supported and is not secure. Using Fx28 will increase risks to your computer and personal data.

ScottRochat

As you have found the initial problem was due to malware have you updated all the malware tools and scanned again ?

more options

To clarify, I did *not* find malware in the system. What Kaspersky turned up was a damaged/corrupted file. (Possibly from the multiplicity of crashes that have occurred since Version 29 installed, but that's pure speculation on my part.)

All my tools have been updated and I have scanned the system multiple times. There is no malware to be found. But FF continues to go down. As Mike noted, the frequency became a little less when 29.0.1 was provided, but the crashes are still occuring often enough to be exasperating.

One result is that I've switched over to Pale Moon. So far, it's less intrusive than Chrome, more secure than IE, and (so far) more stable than the latest version of Firefox. I still keep FF on my system and I'll see if version 30 fixes everything, but I had to find an alternative; v29 was simply unusable.

I'll gladly take additional suggestions on repair if anyone has any.

I'm having the same issue. Version 30 has not helped. I have paid version of Norton and sure there is no malware. I love firefox and don't want to switch. Something has sure gone wrong lately though.

jenh25 and others with problems Please start your own thread by asking your own question (use /questions/new)and post 2 or3 of your recent crash IDs. (See Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) )

Previous versions of Norton have been implicated in crashes with one of the Signatures that is reported here. If Norton software is not fully update after Firefox updates it is sometimes a cause of crashes.

ScottRochatt I do not notice any new information linked from your Crash signatures that gives any new clues. (Apart from the suggestions to scan for malware.)

I would like to point out to everyone that is having this issue that in my Scenario I had been seeing this issue but narrowed it down to the update. After any update, including upgrade to 29, FireFox keeps crashing. The solution in my case is to uninstall the FireFox (but leave the personal information intact) and install it again from the latest/updated installer.

I have just had to do it again today after the version 30 update as FireFox started crashing as soon as I updated to 30. After uninstalling FireFox and installing from the latest installer things are back to normal. I really hope this gets fixed but until then re-installing may help you out

Everyone

  • Please scroll through this thread read any advice that may be useful. Bare in mind this is a old thread started in the days of Firefox29 containing posts about many; probably unrelated; problems.
  • Please do not post in other users threads about your own problem. It is not the best way to get help (and against guidelines). Instead please follow the advice under to start your own thread about your own question

Starting A New Linked Thread I know it is inconvenient to ask this but the following really would be better

  1. Scroll through and read this thread. If you do not find a solution:
  2. Please start your own thread use this speciallink.
It is direct and cuts out a few steps so it is quicker also contributors helping on the forum will recognise it as relating to this thread.
  3. Try to follow the prompts to include troubleshooting information.
Try the green button [Automate this].
If that fails mention it in the new thread.
  4. Post back in this thread but only to confirm a new thread was started.
Someone will cross link the threads so anyone who wishes may follow both threads.
  5. In the new thread
    • Re-read Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly)
    • Post a couple of the most recent submitted Crash IDs. They begin bp-
(Type about:crashes into the address bar and click the green arrow to find them.
Paste them into your own new thread. Do Not use the general link contained in the article.) And note the forum software only changes them to links after the post is made, the link does not display in the preview.
    • Try Firefox in safe mode and with all plugins disabled. If it still crashes paste another couple of Crash IDs into the new thread please. See
Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode
      Disable or remove Add-ons_how-to-disable-plugins

Thanks for your understanding. Let's all try to work together on solving this problem.

Inconclusive Evidence

You probably have a slightly different problem and solution. I note you have seen your issue repeatedly

After any update, including upgrade to 29,

As you consider this a continuing problem then before the next update I suggest you take the following action.

  • Set Firefox to not update without warning you.
  • Note the next full upgrade will be available from about 22nd July https://wiki.mozilla.org/RapidRelease/Calendar
  • Make a copy of all your original Firefox program files and put them somewhere safe outside of the Firefox program and profile paths (Desktop or Documents locations would do)
  • Start your own threads by asking your own question, and following the prompts to provide full troubleshooting information as explained above.
  • Set Firefox to upgrade automatically, and use New Button -> Help -> About Firefox to try to check for and initiate an upgrade.
  • If you need to do a full reinstall then before doing that again copy all the Firefox program files and folders.

That will hopefully enable us to look at your problem and figure out the reason for your problems.

Obviously any problem such as you see could only affect a tiny minority of users, we could not have missed a problem with a large proportion of 1/2billion users crashing on upgrades and there would have been very few users of Firefox 30 remaining.

more options

I downloaded and manually installed Firefox 30 on June 10th, though don't recall if v29 was uninstalled before the installer for v30 was run.

Anyway, I've been using v30 for 10 days and it crashed, ONCE, only 1 time. This also was last week, within a few days of installation.

I'm still using Windows XP SP3 and have a good number of add-ons installed for Firefox:

Adblock Plus BetterPrivacy BrowserProtect CacheViewer CLEO Click&Clean CS Lite Mod Download Helper Dr. Web Anti-virus Link Checker Element Hiding Helper for Adblock Plus FEBE HTTPS-Everywhere IE Tab 2 OPIE PlacesCleaner ProxMate - Proxy on steroids Redirect Cleaner RequestPolicy Session Manager Stylish Stylish Tools Tab Mix Plus TooManyTabs VTzilla WOT

The PC is a 2008 model of Dell Optiplex 755, 2.5 GHz, Core 2 Quad processor (Intel), 3 GB RAM (XP only seeing 3 of the total 5).

Many people reporting that Firefox 30 is crashing multiple times probably have newer and "greater" hardware, but it crashed only once for me. It happened when opening an article link using a new tab.

Before panicking and testing, using safe mode of Firefox, to see if extensions caused the crash, I decided to just restart the browser to see if it'd crash again. If it had continued to crash, too often, then I'd go through the testing of extensions, but only one crash occurred, so no testing is required at this location.

This doesn't mean that other Firefox users don't have extensions that could be causing their crashes, however. Since v30 can't really be said to be crashing in my case, perhaps some people are using extensions that're the cause of their crashes.

Lastly,

I always let Firefox send the crash reports to the Mozilla product teams, albeit only Firefox has done this (Thunderbird never having crashed, and I make extremely seldom use of SeaMonkey, so it doesn't have a chance to crash with my usage).

If people experiencing multiple crashes have been disallowing the sending of crash reports to the development team, then they need to allow these to be sent. If the crashes are due to some inconsistent changes, say, to the Firefox code, then the development team will be able to see this with the crash reports.

Otoh, if the crashes were due to Firefox code problems, then I and other v30 users would also be experiencing multiple crashes; or so I'll guess anyway.
