I got the Firefox 29 update. I dislike it, and it removed functionality (e.g., the add-on bar). How do I roll it back? Do I have to completely uninstall Firefox?

Hi netscaper, several years of research with users went into this redesign, but obviously you can't get everyone to agree on the same thing.

As a small not-for-profit organization, Mozilla doesn't have the resources to do everything itself. Firefox has always had the philosophy of trying to keep the browser lean and allowing for customization through add-ons. At times the ride is bumpy, but usually you have more than one way to get the job done.

If there are particular features that are essential to you to bring back into the product itself, please give your feedback here:

Is the add-on bar the only thing that's bugging you? You can restore it using the extension below:

Another big thing is the tabs on bottom isn't available anymore:

The interface you see in Firefox 29 is a major re-design (first one since Firefox 4) of Firefox's user interface called "Australis." We could argue about the UI similarity between 29 and Chrome but what good would that do? Main point is that Firefox is still way more customizable than Google and way more secure.

If you don't like the new Australis look, you can revert back to the view before Australis using the Classic Theme Restorer addon

Why do they keep on rolling out newer versions yet at the same time delete feature and wanted people to rely on third-party extensions? They completely removed: -add-on bar -status indicator (spinning wheel while loading) -tabs are no longer on bottom -can't move reload button to left but only add another

I f^cking hate this thing more and more. Must be clowns at Mozilla trying to catch up to Google Chrome.

The question was not answered and I require the same information. I have happily used firefox 25 for quite a few months; have installed it - and a large FEBE backup of settings and addons onto myself and countless customer pc's over the past few months.

Upgrading to firefox 28 caused too many issues with Flash compatibility so I attempted to go up to 29 - there are TOO many changes that require WAY too many addons to correct all the things that were changed (in other words, I hate everything about firefox 29 - every last change is horrible to me and I refuse to use it)

Rather than going with 8 new addons (and counting as there are still 4 other issues that these addons have not fixed) I would prefer to go back to 25 when everything worked fine - and looked the way I (and my customers) like.

I have wasted 90 minutes so far attempting to make 29 work - instead I'm looking into LEAVING the firefox fan base - Palemoon - or ANYTHING else is looking good to me right about now...

Change is all well and good - I know firefox is loosing market share to all the people in the world who want to be spon fed content with a simple dummied down browser - but for myself, I expect a full functional browser with every possible feature and option available - preferably without requiring nearly 50 addons to make it look and work right.

I know I can uninstall it - and febe restore in less than 5 minutes - but I will find use in knowing an easier way to DOWNGRADE / remove an update as I'm sure most of my customers will not make regular backups; even if it is automated...

So can someone please answer the OP's question - how do you roll back a firefox install - is it possible?

blombardo:

You can "roll back" a Firefox update rather simply. Just find the download for 28. Make sure it's from Mozilla. A Google search will point you to the right direction.

Feel free to use the old unsupported and insecure versions of Firefox. Please however remember that puts your System and personal data at an increased risk. You may then wish to mitigate that by having well rehearsed bare metal restore strategies or using a virtual machine.

--Not possible from what I see - only Microsoft gives this option (wow I can say something gOOD about THEM??)

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/952279

-Mozilla apparently doesnt build any history in to downgrade - plus they dont want you using old versions - they instead want you to dummy yourself down and use the latest ugly crap... (sorry my opinion of the newest browser - along with my opinion of chrome and any other simplified interface is wildy different from the majority of the worlds users... I am a power user - I'm all for simplification for the standard user - but for Mozilla to simply REMOVE many features and options - thats just lazy... Perhaps their development team is overwhelmed with work - or perhaps their dev team likes all these new changes and doesnt care otherwise... hence the whole 'go find an addon' (as if there was an addon that could fix all the ugly problems in this new interface...)

Sorry for complaining so much - I know this isnt the right place to complain; I submitted my feedback properly already...

FF29: FF 29 wll not let me download an out of date addon - AT ALL - under any circumstances -its grayed out.= I should be able to access it for repair and test purposes (I have addon compatibility check disable addon installed - so I can use various things that arent supported)

Back/forward buttons perma stuck = two addons have so far failed to allow me to move them

the 'customize menu' option = its just too big - with missing features - no addon exists to fix that

Zoom controls forcing a non removable -extremely large - percentage text label - with an addon I restored my addon bar - but can not get the old zoom buttons and functionality to put it back on my addon bar in tiny print - down out of my way!

Then there are tons of other little changes made - I hate every last one of them... My interface has been perfect since just about windows xp time frame... firefox 4 - since then only a handful of improvements I have liked - the separate search bar - oh heck I have to stop typing - this is irrelevant as nobody at mozilla gives a #!$% about my opinion... they are after the opinion of the majority of the worlds users - those who like everything that I hate.

Thank you kindly Moses, I appreciate the info you provided. I will certainly go back to 28 until more interface changes have been addressed by addon makers - or until FF changes away from this new (long awaited) interface change...

I currently have 54 addons installed - and will need at least a few more to attempt to restore my interface... the performance hit is drastic to say the least and I've been finding it increasingly frustrating as Mozilla's decline continues - each new interface "improvement" - to me - is a detriment - a retrograde deterioration of a once powerful feature rich amazing platform - which now looks like a simplified dummied down ios / chrome browser.

Hi Blombardo,

I understand your frustration to the new changes in Firefox but thank you for staying calm. :) It really relieves the stress on us volunteers when we're not being insulted.

Mozilla doesn't "force" you to stay on the current version. You're free to use any version of Firefox if you want, even Grand Paradiso! Feel free to use the old unsupported and insecure versions of Firefox. Please however remember that puts your System and personal data at an increased risk. You may then wish to mitigate that by having well rehearsed bare metal restore strategies or using a virtual machine.

If you want Firefox 28, a Google search shouldn't be too hard. :) Just be wary of where you download it from. Some sites package Firefox 28 or an older version and release it as a Beta or RC copy of it (unfinished build) and may include adware and junkware that you don't want.

I'm closing this thread for two reasons:

  1. jscher2000's answer was marked as the solution
  2. Blombardo has been given the information he desired.
