Hello,

I have this EXTREMELY persistent malware addon which i of course did not want to install, and am having zero success getting rid of....

The name of the Addon is "Savings Addon". I uninstalled it from firefox and through the windows control panel, but still, the addon still appears when i surf with Firefox....i did an internet search but so far none of the websites ive visited seems to offer a solution that works (at least for me)

If anyone can help me i would be VERY greatful

Try removing "HDvid Codec 3".

It also can be removed by AdwCleaner (link in this article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware).

Do you mean that the extension/service gets reinstalled? You may have some other unwanted software that keeps reinstalling it. Malware often works in teams...

If you return to the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program, and click the "Installed on" column heading to sort by date, can you find any other unexpected software that might need to be removed?

If the problem is not an extension but a particular setting (such as home page, new tab page, etc.), please describe in more details where the problem appears.

No, the extension doesen't get reinstalled. at least i dont believe so....it does not show up in the extensions or plugins list. It also doesent show up in the control panel. there is no evidence that its installed, other than the fact that it keep showing up....:/

Could you describe what you mean by "keep showing up"? Is there a pop-up window, or it's in a new tab, or when you use your desktop/taskbar icon, etc. I'm just not clear on where you see it.

By the way, some extensions hide themselves. So you may want to check the list again in Firefox's safe mode (this deactivates the extension so it can't hide itself).

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled (Flash and other plugins still run)

In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

See anything different?

I'm attaching a screen capture so you can see what i mean. its not a pop up, but shows up as part of the page, once on top, just below the youtube search field and once on the bottom, reading "Ads by savings addon".

ill try that safe mode restart and let you know what happens...

Yay :) yes, in safe mode that annoying banner does go away....

how do i get rid of it completely though?

In Safe Mode, if you return to the Add-ons page, can you find any additional extensions to remove? Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions.

If there isn't a Remove button, then the extension was installed externally and we'll need to hunt it down outside of Firefox.

To get the "ID" of the extension, you can open the Troubleshooting Information page. Either:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or page about:support in the address bar and press Enter

The second table of data in the page should be Extensions. Can you copy/paste the line related to this extension? Or to bulk copy the entire page, there is a button in the upper left corner ("Copy Text to Clipboard").

I cant find any new extensions or addons to remove in safe mode, though those annoying ad lines no longer appear. I'm attaching the extension list from the trouble shooting page in case its hiding as something innocent, though as you can see, i dont have that many extensions installed...

and btw - Thanks for the Help!

That certainly did the trick! how did you know it was that one?

Thanks ALLOT!

That one didn't sound familiar so I did a web search and found reports on Google's forums that it displays ads in Chrome. Also, our security software wouldn't let me go to their site because it was reported to be distributing malware. Those were enough to make me very suspicious.

Well Thanks very much again!
