What do you mean with 'has changed'? Did you make any changes? Have you been requested to make changes?

You'll need to check with your email provider what the correct SMTP server settings are.

It doesn't matter whether they support Thunderbird or not, as long as this is standard SMTP.

Please post your Troubleshooting Information.

SMTP is still the server type. They just want you to change the server name to smtpa.bellaliant.net

more options

I am configured according to their setup. They (Bell Aliant) just changed from SMTP port 25 to SMTPA port 2225 and in consultation with them I set up the configuration accordingly. It seems Thunderbird won't accept an SMTPA.

I have made the necessary changes...still get the smtpa.bellaliant.net not recognized message. Bell Aliant don't have any knowledge about Thunderbird.

There is no outbound server protocol called smtpa. This is a name change only by your provider. It does not take much knowledge to configure one email client over another one. You just enter the correct settings and it works. But telling you they do not support Thunderbird worked for them. You left them alone.

Here is their page for setting up Outlook. Just place the info shown there in the corresponding fields in Thunderbird.

The smtpa works on gmail and on the Bell aliant webmail pg. The 'a' is apparently for 'authentication'. I enabled that but still no go. I'll take a peek at the outlook stuff.

more options

There is no place I can find to enter my password.

more options

You'll be prompted for the password once you got the server settings correct.

It is entered correctly, has been all along. When I have been prompted

for a password, only now and then, it doesn't do any good, I still get smtpa.bellaliant.net not recognized.

Port numbers over 1000 are routinely blocked by anti virus programs as there are very few legitimate internet uses for ports "up there" Check your anti virus / firewall allow port 2225 and insert an exception if not.

Note that Authenticated SMTP has been around since 1995, so your provider is about 15 years behind the times on the subject.

Most internet providers use port 587 and 465 where SSL transfer encryption in used. Apparently Bell still just do not get it.

more options

I just use Avira (free) and don't see a place to allow 2225, same with windows firewall.

I'm on that link but can't locate the AppMenue button

more options

I also see where your provider wants your complete email address entered for a username. Do you have it that way?

The AppMenu button is the small square with 3 lines in it. It is found at the far end of one of the tool bars. You can also get to the Help Menu by pressing the alt key to make the Menu Bar appear and choosing Help there.

I do have my complete email. I found the troubleshooting info

What happens if you change pop.bellaliant.net:110 to pop.bellaliant.com port 110?

It seems weird that the pop server is .com and the smtp server is .net but that is how your provider has it on the setup page I copied earlier.

more options

nope no dif. t They both are .net
