clear cookies and cashe automatically
On my desktop PC which is hoooked up to my TV, I have an option to remove the cookies and cashe automatically when FF closes, but on this laptop that option is gone. I installed FF only a few months back, whereas it's been on my desktop for years. Is this option now gone from new versions?

When you choose "Never Remember History" then Firefox places your whole session in private browsing mode. That definitely does not keep cookies between sessions, but I'm not sure about cache. (Logically, that should not be kept either.)
If you want to pick and choose what to save, change the drop-down from "Never remember history" to "Use custom settings for history" and uncheck the box for "Always use private browsing mode." Then you can manage your shutdown options individually.

The "Use custom settings for history" selection allows to see the current history and cookie settings, but selecting this doesn't make any changes to history and cookie settings.
Firefox shows "Use custom settings for history" as an indication that at least one of the history and cookie settings is not the default to make you aware that changes were made.
If all History settings are default then the custom settings are hidden and you see "Firefox will: (Never) Remember History".
"Never Remember History" means that Private Browsing is active and "Always use private browsing mode" gets a check mark.
