I updated to Firefox 24.0 today (on a Windows 7 64-bit system) and since then I have had program crashes about every 2 to 15 minutes apart. Disabling hardware acceleration did not work. Firefox did not crash when I tried it in safe mode, but since I'm not sure what's triggering the crashes, I am still not sure if this is an extension problem. I have two crash reports: bp-40c597f4-aec4-47a0-92dd-14f382130918 and bp-abbbabef-0535-405b-8b30-0a5642130918. Can someone look at these and post a reply?

Hi dsherman99 - I'm using the newer version of the Toolbar, the 2014. 5.1.4 but there were patches for previous versions, for Firefox 24 so I don't don't think the version you're using is any special problem. I haven't had any crashes since disabling the Toolbar for a couple of days and re enabling it as a test brings back the crashes, which proves it's the Toolbar that's the cause and others are reporting that on the Norton Forum. See my related updates from Norton on this issue. Their Developers are testing a fix right now and I'm assuming the fix will be for other patches as well, but I'll keep you posted.

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Toolbar-Norton-Identity/Firefox-24-still-crashes-when-the-NIS-toolbar-is-enabled/m-p/1027739#M14000

For anybody experiencing crashes and also using the Norton Toolbar, the workaround is to disable the Toolbar until we get the update to fix this issue.

 To Disable the Norton Toolbar:
     1. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button, and then click
Add-ons. The Add-ond Manager tab will open.
     2. In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Extensions panel.
     3. Locate the Norton Toolbar extension and click its Disable button.

     4. Click Restart now if it pops up. Your tabs will be saved and restored after the
restart.
UPDATE: The patch for the crash problem has been released as a Live Update for Norton v21 and v20 products for the crash problem with Firefox 24. See my the link here and more info in my related post - click on the link for that update.

The crashes relate to "garbage collection," or the process of freeing up memory that shouldn't be needed any longer.

Safe Mode disables extensions and the JavaScript compilers, as well as hardware acceleration and various UI tweaks. Setting aside the extensions for a moment, here are 4 things I think you might want to switch while in Safe Mode, before returning to normal mode.

Disable hardware acceleration of graphics

This works around the occasional incompatibility with graphics drivers.

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"

Disable the new Firefox 23 Baseline JavaScript compiler and the IonMonkey JavaScript compiler introduced in Firefox 18

It might not be necessary to disable both, but as I am not sure how they interrelate, it seems safest to treat them as a pair.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste java and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click each of the following preferences to switch their value to false:

(A) javascript.options.baselinejit.content

(B) javascript.options.baselinejit.chrome

(C) javascript.options.ion.content

When you exit and restart Firefox in normal mode, those changes should take effect. Is Firefox (more) stable?

Maybe jscher2000 will find the new crash report useful so have you the crash ID for that?.

Other info I imagine Jeff could find of use when he gets back:

  • Test further whilst in safe mode.
    • Are you able to recreate a situation where Firefox crashes in safemode
    • If so please say what you were doing at the time
    • and also paste in the CrashID from a safemode crash.
    • Were you using pdf s at all when it crashed ? (Not that you seem to have a memory problem)

For forum cross referencing purposes

  • Report for your Crash IDs
    bp-40c597f4-aec4-47a0-92dd-14f382130918
    bp-40c597f4-aec4-47a0-92dd-14f382130918
    • Crash Signature: js::GCMarker::processMarkStackTop(js::SliceBudget&)
    • Possibly related bugs include (Bug 871249) -> Bug 881974 - pdf.js uses too much memory, Bug 817342 !

Hi gara56,

You may wish to follow this particular thread as some of the links and information may be helpful to you. In fact one of your crash IDs is the same as dsherman99's the Original Poster.

May I ask that you start your own thread.

  • Please use this special quick and direct link

Your crash signatures are apparently of a rather generic catch all type without at present the exact cause being known.

  1. Please try using safe mode, and also try the steps mentioned in jscer3200's post above.
  2. If you get a crash in safemode please post the crash ID in to your new thread.
  3. Incidentally you are not using an old version of Trusteer Raport are you ?
(That is one previous known cause of one of those crash signatures)
  4. Please post back here once you have started a new thread so we may follow your progress.

Sorry if it is rather inconvenient starting a new thread, but it does make it a lot easier to troubleshoot problems that way.

Hi dsherman99, try disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized add-ons on these two tabs:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Plugins category
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category

Usually a link will appear above a disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the add-ons page and click the link as the last step.

I have same problem with same OS as dsherman99. Problem occurred on FF 24 and on the FF Nightly Build v25.?+. Originally believed it was caused by a combination of FF update, Java update and/or Flash update. Made changes recommended by jscher2000 in his 1st post above. Appears to have worked....so far.

Hi kristin149,
Thanks for the information. I wonder if you have a similar Crash signature or not ?

Would you mind starting your own thread and posting a couple of your latest Crash ID s there.

  1. Please use link https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/new/desktop/fix-problems/form?search=+firefox+24+crashes+%28%2Fquestions%2F971603%29&step=aaq-question
  2. Please post back here to confirm you have started a new thread.

Presumably you are not wishing to continue using Firefox either in safe mode or with the Javascript compilers disabled unnecessarily. These are intended mainly as troubleshooting steps rather than as a permanent solution.

The cause of my problem was either the Norton Toolbar 2013.4.3.4 or Norton Vulnerability Protection 12.0.0.380 - 1 extension. I don't have Norton Confidential, but I do have Norton Internet Security. I really appreciate everyone's posts, and thank you jscher2000 for your suggestions!

Thanks for posting back dsherman99.

If this is anything like previous issues with the Norton software the Norton AV carries on working in the background and so keeps your Computer safe.

What stops working is some of the extras. Usually Norton have released their own updates to coincide with Firefox Releases, maybe in this instance that failed.

I did notice a post

about Firefox 24 crashing on the Norton Forum, but do not see any Norton announcement about the issue. Needless to say downgrading Firefox is not recommended, that itself is a security risk.

Also note if using the Norton site it has problems with Mixed content. You will need to click the shield on your location bar and disable the mixed content blocking if you wish to see the site correctly.

Hi everybody,

There's a strong suspicion that the new Norton Toolbar is causing these crashes with Firefox 24.

     https://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Toolbar-Norton-Identity/Firefox-24-still-crashes-when-the-NIS-toolbar-is-enabled/td-p/1023987

It hasn't been pinned down, yet, conclusively, and there may be more than one cause for these crashes. But Tony Weiss, the Global Administrator for the the Norton Forum is requesting detailed information on this and there are 8 pages of complaints on their forum. Many users are reporting it and some have said that disabling the Toolbar stops the crashes. I've copied and pasted Tony's reply for context:

Re: Firefox 24 still crashes when the NIS toolbar is enabled Hi everyone, Thanks for reporting this issue. We need some details to help nail down this issue. Please post the following information when reporting this issue:

- The order of events for installing products. For example: Had N360 v20.4 installed, updated to v21.0.1.3, then updated to Firefox 24, then ran LiveUpdate to get Norton Toolbar v2014.5.1.4

- Confirm the version of the toolbar you are running. You can find this in the Firefox Add-ons.

- the steps you took when this crash occurred. For example: After updating to FF24, I launched FF, the toolbar was disabled, I went to the Addons and enabled it, and FF crashed.

- If there are error messages, please include them. If there aren't error messages, please describe exactly what happens. Does the product shut down completely? Does it freeze?

- What indications do you have that the Toolbar is the cause? Is it the correlation between the recent patch to v2014.5.1.4?

With this information, we can better understand the issue. Thanks.

Tony Weiss Norton Forums Global Community Manager Symantec Corporation

I'm testing with the Toolbar disabled and we need to know if people who are reporting this issue are also using the Norton Toolbar, version 2014.5.1.4.

Hi everybody,

The crashes are, as I suggested, caused by the Norton Toolbar and now it appears to be confirmed. It possibly is the patch for the toolbar that was released for it, that's the problem. Therefore, unless you don't have the Norton Toolbar installed, all other trouble shooting steps or Firefox "patches" are irrelevant.

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Toolbar-Norton-Identity/Firefox-24-still-crashes-when-the-NIS-toolbar-is-enabled/m-p/1027739#M14000

I haven't had a single crash since disabling the Toolbar and I just received an important update from Tony Weiss, Norton Forums Global Community Manager. Unless you don't have the Norton Toolbar installed, all other trouble shooting steps are irrelevant.

Here's Tony's update:

"Re: Norton patch causes Firefox 24 to crash

Hey everyone, this is getting a bit heated, and I want to take the temperature down a bit. Our team has been working to resolve the crashes that many of you are seeing. We're testing out the fix for this issue, and should have some more information to you shortly.

Tony Weiss Norton Forums Global Community Manager Symantec Corporation"

I'll keep you posted as soon as there's an update on this from Tony Weiss.

Hi

Are you all sure this is Norton related?

I do not have Norton, but I have the same problems. For several days now I have tested, and it seems that some of the new Windows Updates are the faulty part.
